that march comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion has been very true this spring with the advent of mild weather people start to think about v the warm balmy days of late spring and early summer v an urge comes over a lot of outdoors people to get their boats ready their camping equipment repaired and spruced up the- arrival of the sportsmens show makes them raring to go even more as people prepare for the summer months so does the ontario natural resources ministry prepare for their arrival in our provincial parks and crown timber lands foresters and budget officers have already planned the amount of money needed to move fire fighters into the potentially most dangerous zones the ministry has committed 7 million to tight forest fires during the 1977 summer it is an outstanding first amongst state and provincial governments throughout north america it means that your ontario government has slotted money before the season even begins whatsis so great about saving current monies for future emergencies if no planning is done now it is like saying that everything in northern ontario is perfectly alright when just the opposite is true northwestern on tario has had a steadily dropping water table for the past two years because of a lack of rain orsnow and because of the ravages of fire for the past three year farm i v fire control officers report 50 or more fires are smouldering initbe muskeg now these fires were started by hunters and fishermen who thought that these fires went out by themselves tbe drought is so bad in the northwest that thunder bay has received only 24 per cent of normal snowfall or red lake only 55 per cent of normal snowfall j- tso the timber- resources up there are sitting ducks for serious outbreaks of fire in 1976 figures show that ontario had 3983 fires burning 13 million acres of forest the highest figure is 21 million acres in 1924 aside from com mitting 7 million the natural resources ministry has set up special training courses on fire prevention a sixman team has contacted people in the pulp and paper and tourist industries to alert them to the dangers the ministry has let out contracts for 6 helicopters and is con- sidering the purchase of infrared detectors which can pinpoint the hottest areas of a fire all vacations for fire control off icers between april 1 and june 30 have been cancelled those are some of the measures which natural resources has taken ito reduce the possibilities of forest firesi a bigger effort must still be made to educate the public about the extent and causes of forest fires the public too must be more careful in the use of fire during camping or fishing trips so if you go on such a trip be careful in using fire yourx caution may well save thousands of acres of valuable timber report milk quota will be set soon j this is the last chance for dairy farmers to lend or borrow market share quota quota can be transferred to match shipments up to theend of march and then it will move back to its original- owner the quota lending program set up by the marketing board is really good but producers have to apply before the end of march if it isnt done by then overquota milk shipped t up to that date will be hit with the penalty of 860 per i pounds on the other side anyone who has produced less than 90 per cent of his market in all the grain classes gerald livingston v the best corn silage t bruce risebrough the best haylage and bruce snider of maple won the protein class with testing over 21 per centt crude protein neglect grojind transit by dr charles godfrey mpp durham w v the urban transit share quota will lose that passenger is acasualtyof v thefedcral govern- apountof quota february milk v statements have each producers record on quota and we have ap plication forms to lend or borrow at our office last weeks mild weather was- great for getting rid of ice and snow around buildings ments highflyirigaffair with air travelvthe recent statement that urban transit will not benefit from i- federal i funds promised in 1974 p points out clearly the failure of the federal i government to isetl priorities inhhe spending i but probably bad for of tax dollars for tran- overwintering crops like sportation j wheat and alfalfa with no snow cover these plants can easily drop below- the critical tem- perature of about f degrees- tests have shown that if temperatures stay below this level for any more than a few hours i- although vmetroj toronto has beenl promised aidforup- grading the toronto union station to purj chase doubledecker cars i for the gotrain systemj and- to install new systems such as toronto strcetsvillel large numbers of plants system all of thesi are killed and those that promises have been do survive will produce only about half a crop so we need a more gradual change to spring weather without plants exposed to freezing flooding and ice cover as usual we can only hope it- works out that way nitrogen is a big help to wheat just as it starts to grow ammonium nitrate at 200 lbs or urea at 150 will give the crop a real boost and the earlier the better it can go on top of snow if the field is reasonably level there- was sur- prisingly good hay at our seed fair last week despite all the rain at haying time last year our exhibitors had top quality green hay with those precious leaves still on harry goulding from weinburgand richard frisby from unionville had the top entries with norman and brian gee of victoria- square and gerald livingston of woodbridge seconds broken because ofl budgetary constraintst however at the samel time the federal government acknowf ledges that it- has spent more than 110 million plus carrying charges and lost tax revenue to purchase 18000 acres in pickerind as an option in cast they arc unable to solvtj the malton airport noiscj problem the result of this id that attempts to decent tralize uhe metro congestion by thd provision of frequenl commutor services tor outlying areas will faill this failure to meel the problem of urbaj living one of the mos important problems the last quarter of the twentieth century continue as long as thj federal government fails- to set-
