warkworth oh i dont bother locking my doors said cy johnston when talking to a group of uxbridge residents about living right next to a penitentiary and most of my neighbours dont veither mr johnston across york -region- federal penitentiary facility has oh a small rural community the 43 individuals on the tour had already inspected the peniten tiary and talked to prison officials in order to get some idea of the sort of facility- that- might be built in uxbridge the penitentiary has been just great for the area enthused mr johnston who is the local manager- of brewers retail all our fears were unfounded r r he told the group that local businesses benefitted that more jobs were created arid that the prison staff was an asset to the community neither he nor anyone else the group met with were worried about escaping prisoners oh weve had a few escapes said one of the guards but since weve put the new razor wire up in 1974 nobody wants to try it its really discouraged them only twoprionefs have escaped since then and they were caught within two hours ap- even if they did get out they wouldnt stay in the area several townspeople pointed out theyd want to get away as quickly and quietly as possible lloyd findlay and his wife who live on a farm right next to the jail told about their experiences after it the pen settled in we knew a lot of thought to myself do i have to get them recounted mrs findlay but it wasnt long before a bunch of men came back with the cattle oh there were two guards with them she hastened to explain but they fixed the fence and everything mrs fin dlay smiled happily and her husband nodded when someone asked parentlythey cut a hole sense said mrs find- in the wire during the lay an elderly lady with our worries were non- the couple if the lights j ti flooding th perimeter ov worst snowstorm of the year- and attempted to get away in a car the fleeing pair promptly rolled the vehicle and were quickly picked up by officials wrinkles and a sense of humour apparently the findlays thought the pen inhabitants were ex cellent neighbors ever since their cattle strayed 1 on prison land one day i comforting the prison didnt bother them mrs findlay replied that they had gotten used to them we would miss them if they werent there she said we find themsort of some in uxbridge tour group saw prisoners as a threatening mass by annegret lamure warkworth residents of warkworth a little town located just four miles from the sfederalpenitentiary residents taking part in the tour obviously the chairs tables and sun umbrellas on the patio behind the none of thelocal people seem to object to the close proximity of the prison in fact some are oblivious of its existence after spending three holdquite a months as guests of the different view of- prisons york students the and their inmates than germans will return highmesh 1 what pen her image of what a presidents replied when prison should be like theyre inmates thome where they will and i newmarket high schools are participsting in the venture this years canadian contingent is larger than the 10 students who participated last year but for we prisoners was down from the more ihan e surprised reaction of 50 participants in 1974 one tne uxbridge residents of uxbridge being processed said who toured the pen and another after expressing her views on the pam pering of criminals not surprisingly both women had strongly advocated locating the uxbridge penitentiary reception centre somewhere far far from uxbridge- townsfolk viewed the situation s differently first of all they congratulated the group for even being informed before the centre was built the first we knew of it there it was said a resident but although not consulted by the government beforehand met with townspeople afterwards the tour arranged for uxbridge area residents in order to give them an idea of what the proposed uxbridge penitentiary reception centre will be like was paid for by connor development services the company hired by the uxbridge canadian penitentiary service information committee dont tell me this is questioned about the medium security prison on their doorstep cer tainly no one was worried about it some of the most beautiful people i know are in prison said sol stucki an area farmer who used to teach the inmates illustrating the difference in attitude between the locals and the uxbridge visitors the locals viewed the inmates as individual young men who happen to be behind bars whereas many in f uxbridge contingent thought of them as the prisoners the york
