is receiving generous raises at this time of year the list is rather impressive as to the num bers of elected politicians who have voted themselves increased stipends last week the members of the york county board of education doubled their salariesfrom to 6000 the increase compares unfavorably with salary increases the federal mps tried to give themselves just before christmas i doubling the trustee salary is not ap propriate at this time in fact it is not justified based on the cost of living the increase sidewalks ineedeci iii subdivisions t- planning board should give serious the streets are not even curbed with the possibililyof still another school in the east end of towhlhe need for sidewalks i for children alone is evenmore represents a desire by the trustees to receive adequate compensation when compared with private business that may seem like a good thing to some people but to us it does not necessarily follow people who seek public office should be doing so out of a desire to sere rather than for monetary rewards york regional council will likely vote itself a more modest raise at the meeting today each of the 16 members will receive a 1000 raise up from 7000 that is noi- cxhorbitant when it compared to the salaries in durham region council members there recently upped their salary from 10000 to 11000 this has been accompanied by increases for local councillors in newmarket and aurora yes it seems to be the season for elected politicians givejhemselveshealthy increases t the further straw that will help to break- the earners back was contained in the inaugural speech of york regionals chair- man garfield wright he proposed a hew administrative centre for the region it is a fact that the regional staff is lodged inovercrowded wage increases and grandiose building schemes do not do much to fui therthal end the uncertainties of the coming year do not seem toibevery real to our elected representatives the provincial government has made it clean that grants tomiinicipal and regional governments will hold the line this year that could mean considerable tax increases for the average land owner v iit is singularly shnnlri rinnsirlpr lh this week is a special one for those people is typical ofraan to want to organize who feel that prayer is important and should- 5 everything including religion today it has be encouraged the eight churches in become big business operating in a way that is stouffville are alltaking part in ihe second annual week 1 of prayer last years first try was very successful it consisted of a series of meetings one each day for awhole week each church wasin charge of organizing and planning one of the s eight meetings v- i the main jis to get people of different churches and denominations together for prayer well this year the format isthe same pretty well we attended two oflke- scrvices last year and they were quite dif ferent one fromthe other but let me digress a minute in this con nection recently there has been considerable talk about the socalled j ecumenical movement which some think will see the creation of one large church organization to include all believers this movement has been quite strong in its hopes efforts are presently underway for the united and anglican churches to join into one organizational structure the united church at its annual meeting last year decided to start negotiations for a merger with the roman catholic church the idea being that if you can fuse the organizational structures you will eventually have one church well that is a nice idea i suppose if one is interested in churches combining their ad- ministrativeorganizations but what about an old fashioned concept that i call individual spirituality to me that riieans a individuals personal relationship with god that must be the foremost thing that each- christian must examine for himself the large institutions that call themselves churches are far removed from that simple concept- but i too believe f that there is an ecumenical movement in the churches but not the way most people see it no this movement is based on a new work that god is little different than plhei big businesses the differences if there are ariyare slight but true spirituality comes down to the individuals commitlinenltbjesus christ 1 1 and people with this kind of committment can be found in every denominational grouping mowandiriore thesvpeopleare seeking out hkeihinded people in a other groups for fellowship and prayer if one believes as i do that we are in the end times of the church age iheri this mbvemerit across denominational lines is predicted in the bible god is pouring out his spirit on all flesh and this can be seen in the various new movements in the socalled old line denominations 1 f but what about stouffville what does all that have to dp with the week of prayer lt has everylhing to do with it this is one further indication that this body of christ is becoming evident the invisible church with members in all different churches is now being made visible the week of prayer beings these people together in prayer it has other advantages people can share burdens in prayer- with god and with one- another that is especiallytruein a series of meetings covering a whole iweek people can pray togetherand the lifting of hearts in prayer can be a unifying force it provides an opportunity for members of one church to see what is happening in other groups often there can be certain good things in one church that can be useful in another the meetings last year were as varied as one could imagine the two went to were very different although both were pentecostal churches as such in one there was a long time of prayer with everyone taking part as they wished while in the other there was a movie with a powerful message arid x a call for committment to chrisuv- in thisway each soriiething doing in the hearts and lives of individual men different to contributewhich added up to a arid women4jn i wcekof variety and spiritual blessing to all you seethe true church has nothing to do ookpart- j 5i- with organizational structures no it is called the body of christ and is an invisible church in the sense that all church groups contain mcmbersof thisbodyvk jv church denominations aremanmadelt this isourhbpe forthis year that men v and women may see avew vision of what god is doing in this lime that we constantly renew vour committment to christ and that the body of christ is emerging in these last daysn i m j
