w the tribune thursday jan 24 1974 locust hill hamlet tour a continues on north side by madeline harrison locust iull last ueek ue started a tour of the hamlet of locust hill time and space did not permit a visit to all of the houses this week we will continue with our tour we will visit those homes on the north side of highway 7 and go up the tenth concession next week we will continue with our visit by going along the south side of no 7 and down the tenth concession we ended our tour last week at the tracks now lets cross oer and start the first place on the north side of the road is the railway station it deserves a position of honour for it played an important part in the growth of locust hill it wasnt until the tracks were laid that the town became a living entity it is hard not to include the present general store when one is talking of the station they came into being simultaneously and were the nucleus around which the rest of the village was built the station was built to provide an easy access to and from the markets the store then a hotel was built to provide housing for the railway workers both edifices have had their story in this column so we will continue on with our journey next to the station live a couple who need no introduction to those of us who live in the hill ab and velma troyer have lived by the side of the tracks since their marriage velma was born in the house velma is part of the button family her mother was a button and the lot and house were given to her as a wedding present ab and velma later inherited the house they raised their own children and still had lots of cookies in the cooky jar for the rest of us kids in the community memories of visits come back to remind us of good times spent on long summer days sitting in the shade of the verandah watching the station lane traffic watching the gold fish in the outdoor pool seeing the latest trophy bagged by ab who was and probably still is an avid hunter long memories and pleasant days loving people and warm kitchens these are the memories of locust hill kecsor house west from the troyers is the rcesor house maude and irene rcesor lived in that house for as long as i can remember maude was a nurse irene was a school teacher devoted to teaching the north american indians that house holds memories of parties birthday parties pollyana parties both ladies are remembered with a great deal of love and affection in the community both have vacated the house now the old sayings still hold the greatest truths but certainly not forgotten next door is another rcesor house this time the fred kecsor house it is now owned by the galbrniths my memory of this house is of rod and ruth torrance living there why do i remember that ruth tried to cram some knowledge into my rather thick skull namely algebra and french i am afraid it was a losing battle on ruths part not because she wasnt a good teacher she was and is one of the very best but because she had as a pupil one who never could fathom the mysteries of french and algebra even to this day they remain mysteries ruth gave it a good try though i finally made a passing mark in both after a series of miserable failures prior to her tutoring on wc go again next door is the forstcr house lived in by many forgotten by none irma rcesor was raised in this house later joe and muriel thurston bought the house lived in it served the community well then for business reasons had to move on we in the village still remember them with affection they still get back for the odd visit now- the bath brothers live in the house if ou are looking for a place to visit where the conver sations good thats the place to go next door again is the jarvis house lived in for many many years by herb and bertie jams memories of halloween visits and herb making us sing for our treats berties pride and joy her greenhouse or rather solarium an intriguing house to visit the house is in other hands now bertie jarvis lives at the markham lodge from all reports she is in good health and would enjoy a visit from her old friends moving on we come to another jarvis house frank jarvis this house has also seen the people come and go mrs madill and her children some of whom are married now with children of their own i can remember when the oldest one was only approximately twelve years of age boy does time fly the house was later sold to the kennedys john and muriel torrance now call it home lovely home the coumans live next door to the torrances and have for quite a number of years they purchased their lovely home from dr jim and annie armstrong dr jim and annie are loved and well remembered in locust hill if memory serves me correctly they were the original members of the lame duck society oh what euchre parties those lame ducks held we still hear tales of them to this day we were weaned on the lame ducks and their card games this house though is best remembered by me as a wayside stop to and from school waiting for jeananne going to school with her taking the long shortcut through the flats back home after school was out memories here are a series of flashbacks bird feeders full of every known kind of bird inhabiting this part of the country samoyed dog with black mouth books books books as both of the coumans were schoolteachers the books were understandable but to my awestruck eyes they represented untold pleasures i loved books then i love them today an unopened book is an insult to the author an unused and unloved book is a tragedy to me the coumans were wealthy beyond description and oh so lucky the church we have visited before in passing its doors we must comment on the life that has gone through its front doors baptisms marriages deaths all play a part of any community any life locust hills church has seen them all has smiled lovingly at the infants beamed proudly at the marriages and wept with the mourners at one time or another nearly all members of this community have passed through its doors in one category or another its presence has brought peace and tranquility to our community long may it flourish our journey for this week is nearing its end me farm on the right there is the kennedy farm purchased years ago the kennedys built a beautiful new home on the property overlooking the ravine and the woods what a marvelous spot to build a house on the kennedys have them selves proven to be excellent neighbours and friends to our community their house has been the meeting place for many ucw meetings this spot on the side of the road would have been a poorer one without their presence thiarjmh majzathasufoupwed jwi wiww aving for the consumer by mary henry home economist d burn t aiiocuui inc 170 i a the af etit port credit omjiio jif mary
