jas thomas frostfree nights aid corn yield by aa wall york cty- silo filling is well started now with good yields of well matured corn every extra day without frost adds a lot to the feed value we have escaped most of the corn problems here in york we have only a low incidence of things like leaf blight and rootworm compared to counties farther south stalk breakage is probably our biggest worry corn borers generally get the blame for this and they deserve some of it but the real culprit is a fungus disease stalk rot decay of the crown and lower nodes develops as the corn matures and if borer injury is added the losses are serious the stalk rot spores winter in the soil and are ready for the next crop some hybrids are fairly resistant so its a good idea now to note the fields that are standing up well a new additive for silage is availbable this year it is called prosil a liquid form of protein containing some minerals too the protein is derived from anhydrous ammonia and molasses is another main ingredient the idea is to add this material at silo you can be assured of fast dependable automatic delivery of bulk propane for your grain drying needs call stouffville coop 47 edward street phone 6401550 n for more information call or mail coupon lo coop propane dept united cooperatives of ontario 96 kensington st cueiph ontario phone i519 8247370 name andrew phone filling time to make a completely balanced ration for feedlot cattle the rate is 45 pounds per ton and the prosil for a steer eating 40 pounds of silage per day would cost just over three cents so its a cheaper protein source than dry con centrates but total feed intake will likely be a little less making the feeding period longer organic acids for storing wet grain corn will be considered on many farms this fall there are two products available in york now propcorn can be obtained through bp dealers and chemstor through coops and cil agromarts both products protect wet grain from spoilage providing the grain is thoroughly covered enjoy winter too your coop driver with cleanburning fuel oil fast efficient service furnaces humidifiers water heaters and a real interest in your comfort year round is
