thursday jan s 1970 the tribune page 9 union requests education tax be removed from farm land the ontario region of the national farmers un ion is planning a cam paign in 1970 to eliminate education taxes on farm land members locals and districts of the nfu are being requested to make presentation to respective township councils county councils and county school boards to bring pressure to bear on the matter the revolt against the exceedingly high educa tion tax hitting farmers has been initiated by dist rict 6 kent and essex counties of the nfu peter myers fletcher ontario director of dist rict 6 having just com pleted a series of meetings across the province said here today it is obvious farmers generally are fed up with the injustice of the education tax burden being levied upon them by the provincial government under the new boards of education mr myers said he be lieved farmers are prepar ed to support any move that will rectify this in justice farm land in canada can no longer bear the heavy assessment bur den for education costs and under new legislation rural communities will be required to collect and pay school taxes in four annual installments this will mean in many cases that a large portion of taxes will fall due on farm properties before the sale of crops necessitating even higher costs if bor rowed money is required mr myers said the nfu will include in its requests that 1 al school taxes be re moved from farm land as education is not a direct service to the land and the amount of land one owns has no bearing on his ability to pay 2 the provincial govern ment makes more mon ey available from the public treasury for edu cational purposes rais ed either through the federal government or a tax system based on ones ability to pay farm land is an invest ment and people are not assessed taxes for educa tion on other canadian investments these four electrical contractors and technical men associated with the agriculture industry received on tario hydro certificates after completing an intensive highly technical course in farm electrification the cer tificate indicates that they are now qualified agriculture electrical specialists the presentation and ice for the first lime this winter perhaps a few words of caution now may save somebody from a costly and injurious collision the main thing tn bear in mind is that a skid occurs when the front wheels are turned in a direc tion oilier than that in which the car is juoving it lakes very little speed to cause this to happen on packed snow or ice if a skid should occur turn the front wheels in the direction the car is skidding while you gently apply the brakes until the momentum has slowed lo allow you lo straighten out again a skid is much more easily caused by power steering until you become used to it the reason is tliat the turn is often much sharper putting the wheels abruptly at an angle to the ear motion the same problem of suddenness applies to power brakes so press your foot down as gently as possible it is even better to pump them releasing your foot each time when starling on ice the least possible pressure on the gas pedal required lo move the wheels is the best pressure snow tires are a good investment and they often pay for themselves in avoiding accidents towing chages and inconvenience they may even save your life markham chrysler dodge no 7 hwy a lidlw
