saturday morning and afternoon peter harris provincial gravel legislation assailed by uxbridge councillor uxbridge twp uxbridge township coun cillor clark muirhead has condemned proposed legis lation by the ontario mineral resources committee as a legalized rape of the townships around tor onto mr muirhead who is a civil engineer pointed particularly to a part of the legislation that would take the control over gravel pit operation out of the hands of municipalities the recommendations of the committee proposed amendments to the municipal act that would pro hibit municipalities from passing bylaws outlawing pits and quarries in their area in the case of a municipality with an official plan pits and quarries could be prohibited in areas where the plan specified that they were undesirable the recommendations contended mr muirhead would do nothing to combat the destruction of many municipalities by gravel pit operators prop erty values in these areas he said are being ad versely affected and trucks connected with pit operations are responsible for serious traffic prob lems in many villages mr muirhead said he would favor banning gravel pits and stone quarries from inhabited areas of the province and the possibility of bringing the minerals down from the north by bulk trains should be in vestigated he said that in his township the gravel companies owned about 1200 acres of township land enough land to do them for 50 years and the recommen dations which he said did little to regulate existing mines would affect them very little mr muirhead promised to make all the repre sentations he could to the provincial legislature committee to study snowmobile legislation one day hunt markham twp a high population of rabbits and fox was given as the reason for an application from j hunt that a one day hunt be allowed in an area south of highway 7 council agreed to the re quest but did not specify a date boxing day will be ob served as a public holiday with stouffvillemarkhamuxbridge ont thursday dec 18 1969 15 cents board discusses plans for 600home subdivision development from 9th to highway 47 stouffville plans for the most ambitious development yet envisaged here were presented to members of the local planning board on thursday the scheme proposed by algrove management limited would occupy all the land from the 9th cone east to highway 47 the only break being the land under the conservation authority adjacent to the new dam the proposal was described to the board by en gineer d miklas assisted by mr brian moffatt the algrove company is owner of all this area as well as the harper farm on the south boundary of the muni cipality the development section takes in the re maining stcuffer farm and the gar lehman farm comprising 111 acres 600 homes provision would be made for six hundred homes in addition to a school site park land and shopping area the company representatives suggested a figure of five acres for the school and five acres for the adjacent park reeve ken laushway commented that this park which the plan indicated would be near the centre of the area might not be convenient for many of the children situated at either extremity of the development he suggested several smaller parks would be of greater use he also commented that the shopping area did not appear of sufficient size and suggested apartments with stores on the ground floor railway crossing mr miklas advised that the company had already been in consultation with the board of transport commissioners regarding the railway crossing which would have to be made this second crossing of the railway has been a continuing stumbling block to former developers seeking a through road from the 9th to the 10th the municipality has always desired to alleviate this main st bottleneck extensive services the company would agree to the building of all sanitary sewers storm stewers water and roads fully paved and curbed no cost figures of the entire proposal were given nor contribution to the exten sion required for the present disposal plant board members believed that more study would have to be made of the street entrances particularly church st which the reeve pointed out was not in condition to handle heavy traffic from so large a subdivision other entrances would be on the 9th cone highway 47 and edward st north of the high school mr miklas told the board members that the com pany was asking that consideration be given to the plans and they would entertain any suggestions which the board could make the board agreed to study the proposal and report back when ready because of the size of the development it was not thought that final plans for a go ahead could be ready before 1971 runs in front of car stouffville six year old cession within the town limits an area man was killed at this location earl ier this year in a letter received from the cnr it was pointed out that several of the rec ommendations outlined by a coroners jury investigat ing the death were not suitable from the stand point of the railway the letter stated that the railway felt that both road and rail traffic were too light to warrant the in stallation of signals and gates at the location that it was not practical to re duce the train speeds and that it would be unfair to restrict the service to a nearby factory by requir ing the boxcars not extend beyond the end of the building it was requested that the town install stop signs at the location and if the council thought that signal lights were necess ary the railway would as sume a portion of the cost for their erection council moved that the railway be requested to in stall the signal lights as soon as possible and that the township of markham be asked to assume a port ion of the cost as the road forms the boundary be tween the two municipali ties the stop signs will be erected for the interim period
