page 2 the tribune thursday nov 20 1969 the cold impersonal trend the trend toward the impersonal its everywhere one can fairly feel it a nothing name a blank face an ibm statis tic these cold hard facts of life totally unacceptable in our opinion cannot be changed unless we the people demand that they be changed a prime example of what has oc curred was very obvious at the gra duation exercises of stouffville dist secondary school friday night the york board of education members located as they are in newmarket could not know or be expected to know the personal accomplishments of graduates here we were aware of it the students were aware of it what do you know said one holding his diploma up high i represent an investment of s8000 thats right replied another and im considered among the top 25 in ontario whats that supposed to mean neither seemed to know or care in the field of assessment welfare and municipal government control were headed in exactly the same di rection at the court of revision hearing november 7 and 8 it was obvious that neither the assessors who check ed some of the properties nor the court members who heard the com plaints were acquainted with the problems in question one appellant went so far as to invite the court out to his premises to inspect it for them selves the invitation was rejected this is the trend today govern ment farther from the people its frightening vote for the person not the party municipal elections and party pol itics do not mix this has been our opinion in the past and it has not changed within recent years in the town ship of pickering it has been sug gested that certain candidates have received assistance through associa tion of this kind we contend that reaction by the electorate could also work in quite the opposite way with municipal elections pending in pickering december 6 the party affiliation rumor has once again rear ed its ugly head it is therefore with timely judg ment that mp bill newman ontario south has seen fit to flatly deny the report before it becomes accepted as fact a prepared statement by mr newman is published in the tribune this week no candidate if hes worth his salt need ride on the coattail of a pro vincial or federal member let him be elected on his own merits alone these are the abilities that will count for a members worth when he assu mes office next january not his good standing at queens park or ottawa could end speculation finance minister bensons new tax plan if and when it becomes effecr tive could put quite a damper on land speculation something that has been rampant in the stouffville area for several years added to the fed eral governments clamp on this type of activity is the much heavier tax levy which is going to be imposed on speculative land already for sale signs are pop ping up here and there on land that was heretofore being held for bigger prices under the new local assess ment the cost of holding this land is going to be many times higher and by 1971 the government may be tak ing a fat slice out of the big profits which would accrue on such holdings few citizens are not likely to shed any tears over the upswing in taxes on land held for speculation and the result may be a brisker turnover in property the recent assessment court made it clear that land though purchased for future development will not fare so badly if it continues to still be farmed on the other hand land thai- remains unused and is merely held for an inflated sale price will have to pay taxes commensurate with the price being asked land values in and around town have skyrocketed in the last two or three years with instances turning up where prices being asked are five and six times what they were two years ago stouffville has already lost one industry because of this very infla tion and the hope is now that land holders will be persuaded to part with property at a much more reasonable figure i i i bell tolls from peace tower calling for an end to the war in vict nam the bell in the peace tower of st philips anglican church rang out over unlonvlllc saturday morning as congregation members and supporters chose this method to display their concern over the continuing conflict a petition calling for the federal govern ment to play its part in ending the deadlock between the two sides will be sent to york north mp bamett hanson jas thomas jts some of them century city fellers with their high falootin ideas sugar and spice yes madam times change by bill smiley do you know what the upcoming generation of canadian men is going to marry rotten wives and do you know why because the mothers of these potential wives have spoiled them rotten they have overprotected them tried unsuccessfully to impose their own dubious taste on them and re fuse to allow their daughters to learn anything practical like sewing or cooking this is not a blanket condemnation but it certainly applies to many people i know nor must i blame it all on mothers many fathers aid and abet i sdeak from experience these middleaged spoilers are driven by several motives most of them were growing up when things were tough all over and they are ruthlessly de termined that their kids are going to have all the advantages they couldnt have thus we have a plethora of lessons in music ballet figureskating we have the very latest fashions and fads regardless of cost we have cars for kids who would be dangerous on a tricycle another motive is fear by shield ing their children from any and all unpleasantness including work they hope to keep them straight and out of the clutches of drugs sex and hip- piedom more often they drive them into trying something out of sheer boredom with their diet of pablum another reason for the cocoon like overprotection is love you dont like to see something you love in trouble whether its emotional finan cial or legal and a final motive is plain laziness mothers say id rather do it myself than have to nag at her or him so do fathers thus many of the things which middleaeed people con sider virtues punctuality diligence courtesy cleanliness go by the board but when you have to tell an 18- yearold girl to wash her feet theres something wrong my neighbor whose son is at col lege was wakened early saturday morning by a longdistance collect naturally call from said son his car had collapsed and he wanted to buy another one choking back his natural fury father said he would think it over result he and his wife drove about 300 miles to see the kid and get some thing settled examnle two our daughter is at college my wife writes about three times a week and her letters consist mostly of do this and dont do that the kid needed winter boots and a winter coat this of course is very unusual in canada and demands ur gent action and of course at 18 shes much too young to buy them for herself and of course she might be lonely in that big city with no friends so we drive through 450 miles of that fog and rain counting hotel bill tips gas and a couple of dinners out those boots and that coat cost about four times what they should have and then the brat says she isnt lonely at all thats the only reason i went and i told her so however and despite we had a pleasant weekend dining out we sat beside a young couple he was a czech not long out very smooth very handsome she was a newfound lander very friendly very open then a sikh indian turban and beard came in and sat nearby look ing desperately lonely i asked him over the chef a young czech who was a friend of the other one joined us and said hed like to take my dau ghter out kim spilled something on her mothers best blouse we adjourned to our hotel room for a couple of pleasant hours the newfy girl asked kim if shed like to share an apartment i wouldnt be surprised if a czech did too my wife worried about the smooth czechs the sikh lost his melancholy dont think ive strayed from my theme our kid is spoiled rotten she cooks like a onearmed paperhanger and couldnt sew two burlap bags to gether my deepest sympathy is ex tended to her future husband jqttgtkbjbhyo mr editor i have noticed with interest your valiant efforts through your editor ials to stir up some interest in this weeks stouffville nominations this is not a predicament peculiar only to stouffville but it does seem that over the years this town has had more than its share of lean years when practically no one would be induced to offer themselves for public office it has not been a case of get the best person you could but just get anyone its a sorry situation but a tendency that has grown citizens are only interested as nonpartici pants the trend is reflected in school and church as well just as in muni cipal business people are interested but not to the point of being involv ed as there are fewer and fewer rate payers who will take part the re sponsibility of running these insti tutions will become concentrated in fewer and fewer hands if were ever going to reverse this trend weve got to start now or it will be too late and the place for people in stouffville to start is at the annual nominations thursday ivan harrison suggestions and some concrete cours es of action i have arranged a meet ing with the minister of health to discuss this problem and we are tak ing to him some suggestions as to what we want action on i have also arranged to meet with the board of education to discuss this matter and to present sugges tions for action to be taken there will also be another meeting arranged by interested people to dis cuss and suggest some of the means of coping with the drug problem in the schools in this area one thing we must not forget in order to cope effectively we must have participation by the total com munity including parents students school staff etc i am hoping as a result of some of these meetings that we will have total participation i have talked with and expect to have more contact with students in the near future to hear their views and ideas on how to cope with this problem i understand one of the service clubs is taking on this problem on p provincewide basis they are to be commended for their efforts william g newman mpp ontario south my statement on the news media nov 10 regarding the drug problem in ajax pickering and dumbarton high schools has brought many phone calls from students parents and concerned school officials i met with the three principals and their staff including guidance councillors to discuss the problem we must remember that these are concerned busy pedple who not only have to deal with the total field of education in their schools but also many other problems including drugs i can assure you that as a result of the meeting we came up with many dear sir everyone seems to be very pollu tion conscious these days and rightly so right here in stouffville we have a problem thats much the same prior to halloween all the gar bage containers are removed from the street why are they not put back surely the cleanliness of the town is as important during the winter as in the summer howard johnson established 1888 c h nolan publisher jim thomas editor noel edey advertising stage and all the men and women merely players they have their exits and their en trances and one man in his time plays many parts these lines from the eloquent pen of william shakespeare are as appro priate now as then in fact if clerk elwood foskett had stepped to the platform of the goodwood hall monday evening and quoted the piece in its entirety it would have brought the uxbridge twp nomination meeting to a more fitting conclusion for rightly or wrongly thats what nomination meetings really are bit part actors on a stage attempt ing to appease an audience of too few friends and too many critics while theres a marked similarity between most gatherings of this kind the setting at goodwood monday varied somewhat from the nostalgic format of former years the stage scene was shifted and the audience not the actors assumed the title roles i watched their reactions as old candidates and suggested new ones straggled into the smokehazy room some in pairs and others one by one i listened to their comments as the identity of each wouldbe office hold er was posted on the board the crowd is one of contrast a generous mixture of yesterday today and tomorrow theres joe sitting on the outside edge of the aisle three chair rows from the front a trace of manure on his long rubber boots indicates he has whipped through the evening chores in jig time his only intent is to cabbage a ringside seat even if it means waiting a full halfhour for the show to start he welcomes the reeve with a goodnatured slap on the back give it to em alvin dont take nothin from them citv folks he calls out were all behind you the reeve looking a bit embarrassed by the sudden acclaim nods his thanks and continues on in the same row but at arms length from their country cousins sits a counle of obvious means the husband chews impatiently on a 35- cent cigar staring first at the ceiling and then at the floor the lights above reflect off his patent leather shoes his wife covered in mink contrasts sharply with a housewifes black cloth coat immediately to her right the obvious class distinction tends to discourage conversation between the two elsewhere throughout the jam- packed meeting hall the differences are the same business suits and overalls white collars and sport shirts peaked caps and fedoras fur stoles and bandanas outside the rural third concession road is lined with volkswagens and cadillacs chevrolets and lincolns pickup trucks and ranch wagons the urbanrural folks although worlds apart in many respects have come together for one night under one roof their mission although deadly serious lacks all outward signs of hostility the number one topic of conversation is what else century city to many of the natives the crea tion of a development of such magni tude in their very midst is like a bolt from the blue something to be fear ed theyre restless and who can blame them while admittedly their plight has not been a pleasant one its all they have known for several generations and now suddenly almost with out warning an influx of up to 34- 000 persons is proposed plus all the services to accommodate a buildup of this kind the first thought quite naturally is stop it keep the strangers out later as the shock of r the initial impact wears off a more affirmative approach is taken and the benefits of the project are considered what now the actors have said their parts the critics have had their fling the show is all but over well all be a little wiser dec 1
