thursday oct 9 1969 the tribune page 15 regional government criticized by councillor jiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiimiiiiniiiinii iiiiitiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii hulllllllilt uxbridge twp councillor frank hendy has voiced strong objec tion to any proposed reg ional government plan that could result in the break up of uxbridge township councillor hendy vent ed his feelings on the sub ject at a meeting of the ratepayers association in goodwood sept 29 the guest speaker was brian donaldson brock road pickering township an official of the dept of municipal affairs mr hendy said that in his opinion a larger reg ion to include all or a part of uxbridge had no bene fits to offer instead he predicted the cost of oper ation would increase and thus reflect on the taxes of present homeowners i am satisfied with the town ship the way it is i wish to maintain residence here i feel that regional govern ment should be opposed deputyreeve bob nes- bitt took a similar stand he commented on the ex cellent financial status of uxbridge noting that as of jan 1 1970 there would be no direct debt outstand ing against the municipal ity he said too that the entire county enjoyed an excellent financial stand ing one of the best in the province mr nesbitt pointed to the new school system as a sample of what could occur under regional con trol he said that educa tion tax in uxbridge had taken a tremendous jump in 1969 mr donaldson said that until tentative boundary lines are drawn it was dif ficult to ascertain what municipality would be in cluded within the region he predicted that no decis ion on this issue was like ly untu late in 1970 he spoke against a program of piecemeal development in areas with no service he pointed to garbage dis posal as a major problem the recently announced new bypass highway around claremont at a cost of sl4 million is a farther subsidy at taxpay ers expense to the gravel industry of uxbridge township charges ux bridge councillor clark muirhead with some 1200 huge gravel trucks a day pass ing through the main street of claremont the situation had got to the point where something had to be done the noise groundshaking vibration diesel fumes not to mention the mortal dang er to pedestrians and other motorists have made life intolerable to many residents along the main street of the village mr muirhead said but this is a case of treating the symptoms her than the disease he continued the dis ease is the ever increasing scale of gravel mining in uxbridge township the truck traffic is just one of the symptoms mr muirhead feels that grcvel in the huge quan tities now demanded for the metro toronto region should be hauled by rail rather than truck if giv en a fair chance rail is a much more economic me thod of hauling bulk com modities but rail cannot compete against all the indirect subsidies to the truckers over 90 of the traffic tonnage using the brock road through claremont is gravel trucks one train can haul as much as 500 trucks and there is virtually un used canadian national line to toronto going right through the heart of the uxbridge gravel area if more than a million dollars of public money is available to alleviate the truck traffic conditions in claremont it seems to me the money would be much better spent to install water and sewer senices in the village after switch ing the gravel traffic to rail water and sewer services would enable the village to grow and pros per shops could be con centrated in a new off- street shopping centre claremont would have a new lease on life normal traffic increase can be handled for some years yet by repairing the brock road through the village at modest cost ironically a good per centage of the si w million the new road will cost will be spent to buy gravel with the taxpayers money from the very gravel com panies who will make most use of the new road when things like this hap- benjamin a moorea paints h0lden paint wallpaper 134 ain st n
