government bypassing the people zjz on t less efficient councillor councillor a b bud bonner charges regional government will remove per il sonal contact with the people and increase costs of operation harkham regional development yes regional government no this is the current stand taken by councillor a b bud bonner of markham town and it seems that the majority of his fellow members con- cur in a 6page brief pre pared by mr bonner the councillor questions whe ther the present system is at fault and if so whether regional government will provide a permanent solu tion he feels that many municipalities the town of markham in particular are being forced to accept a program that they neith er asked for nor need he charges too that the peo ple themselves were never directly consulted on the issues at stake using the county school board system as an ex ample councillor bonner feels that regional govern ment will be met by the same degree of dissatisfac tion when one questions this the education people blame the province and the province in turn blames the boards of edu cation the only known fact is that education costs are rapidly becoming un bearable for the property owners the councillor continued while larger centraliz ed units are said to be more efficient mr bon ner challenges this stand he cites county welfare as proof in his opinion that such is not necessarily the case he feels that govern ment removed from the people themselves is not good government the responsibility to provide good management and government of the munici palities should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the municipal politic ian and policed by the people they serve locally lie said mr bonner contends that the origin of present local governments came about because one central body could not look after the needs of all areas each with situations peculiar only to itself to make dec isions within the magni tude of regional govern ment without knowledge of a particular areas needs can in no way be in the best interests of the people involved he says as a municipal politic ian it is my duty based on the knowledge 1 have of my own area to do what i believe is best for the people i represent and the indication is that the people do not want their local government moved away he continued mr bonner noted that for this reason the markham council voted unanimously to request the status of a separated town rather than become part of a re gional concept surely concludes the councillor our system of the past years controlled as it has been by the pro vincial government can not be so bad as to war rant the drastic changes being proposed musselmans lake gusty winds on friday july 25 made for rough sailing on musselrnans lake and four novice sailors found themselves swimming
