order this week you may laugh you may feel discour aged but i think you will say it hafe a ring of reality about it it was zero weather on that saturday after noon the cars then had little or no heating system so it took will power to head out to the station to pick up a passenger especially since the passenger was a stranger this passenger however was a bit special of course in those days all leaders in the coun try were considered special this one was a preacher he was to be the guest at the little church on the hill next sunday word reached the ferguson farm that a car was needed to collect the visiting preacher so by the time the clock struck one that satur day afternoon the busy farmer had changed clothes and was ready to motor down to the train as he drove down the road he wondered what he would say to the preacher do preach ers talk about the weather the cattle and the government he thought the way we farmers do like many people bill ferguson had the notion that preachers dropped down out of the sky he didnt know too many of these people he called men of the cloth after the shivering twentyminute drive he finally reached the station he was there only five minutes when the train chugged to a stop and all six passengers got off from one to the other he looked trying to select the one that best suited his idea of a preacher no he could not tell but then just before the train pulled away a seventh passenger landed on the plat form there was no doubt this time he had a black suit black coat black shoes and black gloves as well as these he had a very sad look on his face yes this had to be the preacher bill walked towards him you must be prea cher jones he ventured gravely the man re plied sir i am the new undertaker here bill walked to the gate and found the chris tian preacher waiting for him smiling real estate for fast courteous service call bert isiait udiilioi for complete satisfaction call 4478518 agents wanted with ob without museum has been gathering informa tion about the early bed spreads over coverlets used in ontario and en deavouring to discover who wove them the type on which i am working at the present time are the fancy ones without centre seam with realistic patterns of roses birds chrysanthemums grapes and similar mo tifs there are three types that turn up in the gen eral a r e a of markham twp which must have been made in that gener al area two i have seen recent ly have a history connect ing them with weavers in the stouffville area but their names remain a mystery one with a pattern of roses and with birds in the borders is thought to have been woven near ringwood about a hun dred years ago the other woven about 1895 belongs to a well known group with large scrolls in the borders and various pat terns in the centre this was definitely ordered if not woven in stouffville probably in the eastern part of town the third type has all- over floral patterns some times arranged in squares and floral borders on four sides this is unusual as most fancy coverlets from any part of the province only have borders down the sides and across the lower edge in my search for the weavers of these cover lets i have been working through the early census returns for 1851 1861 and 1871 the last being the latest that can be exam ined i have discovered one weaver at wilfred named william hunter who de- finately wove coverlets of this general type he was working from about 1865 to 1900 and he may well have woven the type with the scroll borders the weavers of the oth er two types remain a mystery and the only weaver i have managed to find in the census in the stouffville area was william withers who was aged 36 in 1861 he was born in scot land and must have come to canada about 1851 as his four children were all born here by 1871 he his wife and the oldest child were ap parently dead as robert withers age 17 is shown as a weaver and as head of the household with four brothers and sisters ages 6 to 14 living with them was christopher armstrong born in ireland aged 29 a widower he is also listed as a weaver it is possible that some of your readers may have some additional scraps of information i would be most grate ful if any of them who can help would get in touch with me at the tex tile dept roval ontario museum 100 queens park toronto 5 ontario harold b burnham curator
