thursday feb 20 1969 the tribune page 9 in york county farm ititrtftun pig production shows increase a a wall agricultural representative for york county xewmarket there was a good turn out at the annual meeting of hog producers for york it indicates the importance of the hog industry in york many new hog units have been set up in the last few years and numbers have expanded too despite the fact that we lose farms and farmers every year the number of hogs produced in york goes up last year we shipped just over 2000 each week the new grading system was talked over at the meeting there were no complaints about it and several producers reported better returns than under the old system john fawcett at king for example reported an almost record price on a carcass that weighed over 170 lbs it would have been discounted as a heavy be fore but because it had the weight and no excess of backfat the index worked out to almost the top price it works the other way too of course a poor car- cars will bring a lot less now than it used to the price changes by 24c from the best to the poorest quality and there are fur ther demerits for extreme defects the new method is a real step forward for pro ducers packers and con sumers because the price paid represents the real quality of the product much more accurately we are pleased that one of our local pig breeders was a very active member of the committee that de veloped the new grades eric alderson of aurora put his experience and knowledge to good use the need for good con formation and leanness in breeding stock is more im portant than ever rop scores and backfat probes have to be in a hog pro ducers bag of tricks these days a good boar should weigh 200 lbs at 165 days and the backfat determined by probe should be less than 95 inches a gilt should make the weight in the same time and backfat probe average should be less than one inch swiss chalet park opposition to zone change application pickering twp an application by the operator of swiss cha let park at greenwood pickering twp for a change in zoning to per mit the operation of a retail sales rental and service business for re creational vehicles has brought opposition from an adjacent own er harry newman the park fronts on hwy 7 and includes parts of lots 11 and 12 concession 6 mr sak- eris the owner was re presented by solicitor milton j mowbray at a meeting before plan ning board jan 23 mr mowbray said that wintertime opera tion made the park a functional business dur ing two seasons instead of one he said that the property was open to snowmobiles and a sales and leasing outlet should naturally follow mr mowbray submit ted statements from ad jacent residents giving their consent to the ex panded program mr newman the lone opponent to the proj ect said that the pro posed use would con stitute a noise nuisance and lower the value of his property he also objected to the dump ing of garbage or the park lands immediately south of his grounds on the paddock road mr mowbray indi cated that the newman residence was approxi mately 200 feet from the park property boun dary and the nearest skidoo trail was about 60 rods from his house following a lengthy discussion the board agreed that a decision on the application be deferred to feb 20 it was agreed too that the dumping operation be cleaned up to the satisfaction of the mun icipality and the coun ty health unit the planning direc tor john faulkner will obtain the opinion of the township solicitor with respect to the op eration of snowmobiles within the zoning regu lations beef business no average year would have failed in the dairy business almost all the members were concerned about pollution and what prob lems this might present in the future remember holstein-fre- sian association of canada approved the registration of red and white holsteins and black and white hol steins with black on legs and tails that previously had made them ineligible the annual meeting was held in toronto feb 12 these animals will be registered in an alternate herd book which will be kept entirely separate from the regular herd book two more purebreds bought in 1932 gave mr atkinson two heifer calv es but all the milking herd grades and pure breds went down on the tb test in 1933 and had to be slaughtered in a triircl effort two heifers from the spring farm herd of j m fraser streetsville and two from the glenafton herd of the late j j e mccague al- liston formed the nucleus of the present orchard vale holstein herd this herd became ac credited for tb in 1935 feed- lot operators recently at tended a beef production course at centralia col lege during the five days the course lasted farm ers lived at the college samples of hay corn silage corn and concen trate were analyzed for each feeder before the course this information was used in compiling ra tions for fattening cattle using national research council recommenda tions it is interesting to note some of the comments expressed by these peo ple who are actively en gaged in the production of beef cattle part of the course con sisted of a beef forum during which time mem bers were able to express their own views these in cluded why they went in to the beef business to what extent they had suc ceeded in fulfilling their objectives and how they think the beef business will develop in the fu ture a number who have gone into the beef busi ness were originally dairy fanners it seemed to them that the labor re quirements of the dairy business didnt necessar ily suit their personalities or objectives in almost all cases corn growing was the foundation on which their beef opera tions were built and many emphasized the impor tance of crop production the aim should be to grow the quantity store the quality and feed with a minimum of labor the beef business in some respects is unique in farming the opinion was expressed that there is no such thing as an av erage year and there is no uniform income year to year some members stated that they were amazed at the economics of the beef business and that when management was sound the dollars and cents re turn is favorable borrowing large sums of money is invariably an integral part of the feed- lot business and if bor rowing money is a worry to you dont feed cat tle an opinion was ex pressed by one member that where he considers
