school the crowning of the 1968 may from queen five pretty girls will vie for the honor all from grade 13 they are vicki ken nedy barbi allen jill smith heather doy and mary sissons the winner will be crowned by the schools queen of last year eileen winch vicki kennedy 17 is an avid supporter of mj- hs and has served as a cheerleader for two years music is her first love she plays the alto saxophone in the school band and participates in two other bands outside of school this summer she will travel to australia and in the fall enrol in an honors business administration course at the university of western ontario or the com merce course at queens university kingston barbi allen 19 is a vivacious girl who takes a keen interest in sewing handicrafts and cooking she still enjoys the outdoor life particularly swimming and waterskiing school activities have included the band curling gaa represen tative and participation in intramural sports her ambition is to become a teacher and she will en rol in teachers college this fall jill smith 18 is a petite girl carrying a tremen dous load on her shoulders she is the president of the girls athletic association and participates in almost all sports including basketball volley ball and badminton she is a willing worker in the leaders club and the student council she plans to study physical education following graduation and possibly serve as a phys ed instructress mary sissons 18 is an active member of the students council and leaders club she was captain of the basketball team and a member of the year book staff she loves to sew and has designed several fashions on her own mary plans to attend trent university in the fall and major in french she had the honor of being selected by the telegram as an after four camping periods for boys and four for girls david patterson son of rev w w patterson formerly the minister of st matthews united church richmond hill and a student at trent university has been ap pointed director the selection of the camp name big canoe was obtained through a contest won by ronald sanderson church street north richmond hill it honors mr lorenzo big canoe who for many years was the chief of the georgina island indian band and who gave the name ahshunyooog to the original york county camp at lake simcoe the winner will receive a weeks free camping as his nrize heather doy 17 has ambitions in show busi- iness and the singing talent she displayed at the school open house is an indication that she would be wise to follow this through heather is the first to admit however that opportunities in this field are scarce so with this in mind she is also considering a teaching career she possesses an impressive record of musical accomplishments in cluding folk singing school band glee club church choir and drums in the scarborough chor al society orchestra just for variety she is an ex- cellant gymnast and a spirited cheerleader one of these five pretty girls will be elected president of the pine orchard home and school association for a two year term other members of the executive include mrs mary lloyd vicepres mrs sephonia morton secretary and mrs doris makela nurse has been a member of the organization since its inception she is the mother of two children suffering from this type of handicap other guests in attend ance included mr d d adams public school in spector mr payne vice- principal of the proposed new whitchurch area school mrs doris elliott area trustee in addition to several teachers and parents all persons present were encouraged by mrs mc- monagles assurance that with suitable teaching methods children with learning disability prob lems could overcome the handicap and advance ac ademically at a normal rate the annual pine orch ard school graduation banquet will be held in the vandorf hall june 26 at which time student gradu ates of the 196768 grade 8 class will be honored stouffville players do you like comedy do you like tragedy the stouffville players plan to please allcomers with a selection of three oneact plays they will be pre sented next month and are certain to provide the audience with a thorough ly enjoyable evening mental health campaign a goal of 1000 has been established in stouff ville and volunteers of the canadian mental health association will be calling from doortodoor during the week of may 1 to 7 the cooperation of resi dents in attaining this ob jective will be appreciated canvassers in addition to personnel already listed include mrs cec hend ricks and mrs bruce win- terstein of stouffville and mrs glenn evans clare mont school poster contest stouffville the stouffville and district credit union working through the trustees and principals of the two pub lic schools and st marks separate school are spon soring a poster contest for pupils of grades 5 6 7 and 8 completed drawings will be displayed in the windows of the credit un ions new office quarters main street west tobs opened in june prizes will be awarded to the winners the credit union pur chased the premises form erly occupied by the vil lage shoppe and renova tions are now under way whitchurch students design coat of arms whitchurch twp the pupils of all public and separate schools servingthe township of whitchurch have been asked to participate in a competition to design a coat of arms for the municipality the project recommended by councillor betty vannostrand has been supported by all members the first prize entry may be adopted as the official municipal seal the process of elimination will take place within the schools three entries from each school will be accepted for councils final de cision an award of 25 will be made to the win ning contestant with a second and third prize of
