the community hall explorers the annual christmas party of the explorers was held in the sunday school loom on monday evening with the mothers of the girls as guests everyone enjoyed singing carols also the explorers demonstrating how they con duct their meetings every week christmas refresh ments were served by the girls and their leaders each explorer presented her mother with a gift she had brougham u church brougham the s20v 000 donated and pledged by the congregation of st johns united church brougham was well spent at the first service in the newly renovated church on christmas sunday all of the new finelygrained wooded pews were filled admiration was evident for the attrac tively pannelled front wall with its centrepiece strip of pure white and for the clean white freshness of the walls and ceiling poinsettia and other flower arrangements by mrs beryl donaldson stood out floor sanded broad wooden beams stretch across the ceiling complementing the pews the old pine floor has been sanded through to the beau ty of the wood treated and polished villagers and their friends filtered in through a fine new entrance to the south of the building and were able to gather in a clean fresh hall before walking on the bright royal blue carpet at the rear and up the nave of the church an addition has been built to the rear of the church which will house kitchen equipment and the new base ment dug under the church this past summer is fitted into a sunday school hall six new members in keeping with the renew ed sanctuary and amid the fragrance of new wood five young people received mem bership into the church margaret spang betty jean and faye elizabeth knox elizabeth frances malcolm robert bruce malcolm and william james miller rev a e cresswell who conducted the service from his pulpit on the north side of the podium with a full junior choir on the other side paid tribute to the building committee and to the people who donated so generously he called the new design arresting and becoming dull and dingy churches depress the hearer with the false conception that christs religion is deadly dull he said without sparkle warmth and vitality may the simplicity and beauty of our new church lift our hearts into the expansiveness of wonder and worship to honour claremont doctor saturday january 8th has been set a side as dr tomlinson day when the com munities of both claremont and brougham will honour their physician of many years the occasion will be marked by a reunion in the claremont community hall from 230 to 930 pm a fund has been set up to establish a was reported that an ex cellent match had been held on october 7th on the farm of ross miller sunderianri wih fortyeight lands being plowed the programme for the past year was under the direction of les smith president and john gorrell secretarytreasurer in 1966 plans call for the plowing match to be held in scott township on the farm of morgan degeer son mount albert on thursday october 6th the junior plowing match will bo held on the farm of howard mcgurkin mount albert on saturday oct 1st officers elected or 1966 were some youths who arc ex pected to set the world on fire turn out filled for this special service and many old friends were pres ent to renew acquaintances neighbourhood notes a white christmas after all one that caught most people completely by sur prise and our hats arc off to road crews and police who kept the situation on an even keel sanders were out early and plows took over later in the day there were a few minor mishaps of course cars slipping off the road but no major accidents were reported and most people reached their destinations intact it was a very happy day at the ross hord home with daughter judy and her hus band marshall benson bring ing their new son for his first christmas and at the clarks helen and bill clark brought their new daughter home from york county hospital to greet the family the new baby arrived early last week a very special gift for her big brother and sister mr w l clark who has spent several weeks in hos pital was also able to be home to greet his new grand child and mrs clark plan ned a family party the s r pattersons had two new grandsons in the family party this year and margarets boxing day wed ding kept everyone in a whirl gordon brown was home again after his recent opera tion and able to join the toronto joining the party mr and mrs dick jones departed from the usual cus tom this year and took their guests down town for dinner the party included mr and mrs gordon vaughan and their children and mrs jones mother mrs bunker of altona mr and mrs don mcquay of markham entertained the albert jones family and dons mother mrs james mcquay and mr otto mc quay along with other rela tives and mrs gordon pur- ves was a guest at the home of her son and his family in willowdale dr and mrs a f binning- lon spent a full day begin ning with breakfast with alan and anne binnington and their children and going on to dinner with their daughter anne hewitt for a hewitt family party mr and mrs ken slots en tertained milford and his family and mrs lucy top- ham and mr and mrs el more hill spent the day with the robinsons at thornhill dr and mrs george kelly and the russell boyingtons were at newmarket with dr george kelly junior and his family and mrs jack john son and jacqueline spent the day would be incomplete without a childrens concert and last week december 22 the children shone at browns corners the night was crisp and clear with frost crack ling underfoot and the child ren were on tiptoe from the very first carol mrs reg crawford ac companied choral numbers by he junior choir with mrs george hooper conduct ing and the sunday school children presented skits and songs in their inimitable fashion the cgit gave a revised version of cinderella which was satisfying slapstick and david hooper russell walker and rodney venus vere efficient stage hands santa claus came just in time and allowed the small children to hold the rope which tethered his reindeer out the window in the dark night if two or three children were missed in the melee of parcel distribution and they were put it down to the fact that the sunday school has grown rapidly this year and santas helpers were hard pressed to keep up with changes im sure santa made up for it on his christ mas calls brougham the knox family held a christmas re union at the home of mr and mrs john knox at hampton mr and mrs ai pilkey and family attended a fam ily gathering at the home of her parents mr and mrs goldthorp at
