t9 i the stowfvrii mtun twjv m t ns editorial commending another school year has just ended and graduates have been com mended for their showing and chal lenged to continue we imagine mot who have succeeded have been justly rewarded with material gifts and tha satisfaction of achieving a goal this week this newspaper is publishing a great many of the re sults from stouftville and nearby countrysine while praise is due those who have been successful it is obviously those who have not been successful who warrant more concern for they are in the minority and it is always most difficult to find oneself in this group there are various reasons for students not succeeding and a blan ket condemnation should not be lev elled against those who failed there are always those who obtain high standings who get through even without the teacher and they can take little credit for the high standings of this superior group but it is the middle group of average intellect who need most of the praise and work by little flag thursday was dominion day or canada day whichever you like little if anything in stouftville on that day would have indicated that it was our countrys 08th birthday weve come a long way in the last twentyfive years in the manner of comforts and skills we enjoy but weve moved a long way too from the observances of national holidays bs we used to know them back in the years we refer to almost every business place in town and many homes as well sported a flag out in front for such holidays as the one just passed last thursday we failed to find one additional flag out in town these lags and the bunting that went with them seemed to indicate a sense of nationalism which is missing today certainly in the smaller centres the graduotes the teachers and it is from this group that the failures come there are too those students who through intellectual or physical handicaps are not able to keep up some dont receive the leadership from parents which they should and then there are those who become so involved in so many interests that they neglect their studies some reasons are excusable but all should he corrected if possible anyone can make a mistake but only a fool will continue in it friends should realize that some degree of failure is usually inevitable for every one but is is very difficult sometimes for them to make allowances for others however whether ft students reasons for failure are reasonable or not he should not be discouraged so that he will not make a second try there is nothing final in failure ex cept taking it as final and in most cases there should lie words of en couragement to try and instill a try again attitude that is so much the part of success waving here there was never a july 1st holi day that did not have some special events taking place to mark the occa sion the town park was always a busy place we regret the passing of these events today we are all too busy with our individual problems busy running here and there busy keeping pace with world events that there is just no time to think about why we are having a holiday or doing anything to recognize its significance today there are many voices raised against the idea of flagwaving as something related to war but this need not he so we think it had some good points rather than just an other day we didnt go to work it gave a good reason for celebrating it gave a sense of national unity and a community togetherness as well it was good to show the flag with pride on our national holiday usefulness should while we agree with ihe public school board of markham twp area no 2 that the sale of school buildings should not be considered until their usefulness as a place of instruction has definitely ended we feel too that where possible it would be a fine thing if these structures could serve as a kind of community centre if this is the thought in mind behind the request received recently from the community club at cedar grove then were all for it we do not feel however that such struc tures should be retained merely be cause they represent fond memories of a bygone day a sort of monument to the past last week we visited the loca- be maintained tion of a vacant schoolhouse in an adjacent township the grounds were grown up in waisthigh weeds the windows of the building that were not boarded up were broken in general the entire piece of proper ty was a sorry looking sight we learned that at one time this school was to be the focul point of all com munity activities a combination li brary sports field and meeting house when it came to raising money for repairs and upkeep however interest in the project quickly waned were not suggesting that such a thing would occur in cedar grove but we would suggest that if any building schools included is to re main useful in a community then it must be used it should make one think recently a district newspaper editor arrived af the scene of an acci dent just after the crash in addition to a news item covering the collision the following descriptive report was published ii is reprinted here with the hope that it may save some mo torist from making that one fatal mistake we were not there when the one car smashed into the other we did not hear the noise of the impact as steel and glass and flesh and blood screamed in protest we did not see the cars throw out their dead as they whirled off the highway into the field we did not see or hear them crawl out of the car those who could to look at their happy world so instantly destroyed we got there just after that we did see a man kneel bleeding over his wife unable to understand that she could not speak to him unable to grasp that she would never speak again we left him to his numbed mis- cry to look at a little bundle flung further into the wheat a pretty baby boy he too was dead we left the child and looked in the car here the childs mother and his baby sister were also beyond human help his father was alive in the front of the car a bloody mess and fortunately at that time unable to realize that in that awful second he had lost his pretty blonde wife and babies during this horror the man kneeling over his dead wife kept calling us to do something for hit wife who still would not answer him then we got crowbars to get the teenage boy out of the wreck where he lay jammed against the bodies of his sister and her baby this was almost more than we could stand the sickening bubbling sounds and the pity of it all then finally when the doctor had pronounced them dead to see and hear the kneeling man as he finally realized she was gone as long as we live we will see the agony in his face as he kissed her goodbye there in that dusty roadside this has not made pleasant read ing it was not meant to be no one could begin to describe the horror of such a thing no one can ever be the same after seeing it if only more of us could see them if onlv keeping a cool head ants unwelcome guests at any picnic table if you are pestered by ants during garden picnics or barbe cues try to trace them back to the ant colony you can destroy the entire colony be treating the anthill because every ant returns to it at night accord ing to professor harold goble department o zoology onta rio agric college guelph un less there are a great many ant hills in your lawn he advises its best to treat each anthill separately chlordanc the usual ant killer is the most available to home owners but aldrin and dieldrin are also effective these chemicals useful out doors in the form of granules wettable powders emulsions are available from cooperatives feed and seedmen garden sup plies and nurserymen the emulsions and wettable pow ders can be applied with a sprinkling can or a low pres sure sprayer delivering a coarse droplet spray granules can usually be spread easily using the shakertype containers they come in do not use an oil emulsion however since it will kill the grass and other an unprecedented rumbling in the atmosphere no it wasnt thunder not real thunder anyway though it sounded mighty like it it was made up of two things great men turning in their graves and a vast groan of disgust and despair from several million ghosts if you listen carefully you can even distinguish some of the individual voices in this continuing thunder of protest from the nether world surely that rasping growl belongs to sir winston churchill pool old chap barely laid to rest when something like this comes along to destroy his hardearned peace doesnt that angry bellow belong to sir francis drake could that bulls roar of rage be anvone but henry the eighth surely that booming of blank verse is john milton and wouldnt that bowl of anguish be rudyard kipling theres a duet the angry snarl of the dule of welling ton and the outraged holler of oneeyed horatio nelson and theres a trio it sounds much like the pontifical tones of archbishops cranmer ridley and latimer martyrs three gruff gladstone and dapper disraeli roaring protest are in tune as they never were alive id bet money that female squeal rising above the others belongs to good queen bess hurtling down the halls of five centuries as she rages namesake child elizabeth how could you methinks that magnificent belltoned baritone with the shudder in it could belong to none other than the bard sob bing in sorrow and frustration is this a bealle which i see before me there its out i knew the suspense was killing you yes the great ones of britains glorious heritage have good reason for their celestial storm of indignation the beatles were awarded the mbe member of the order of the british empire yes to this depth of depravity have sunk the ancestors of those giants who took on the spanish armada the pope the french the germans who clobbered natives all over the world and established peace and good trading condtions who defied singlehanded the great turants napoleon and hitler well almost singlehanded dont quail like that old chap dont rip off your victoria cross or your dso and throw it in the garbage chin up have a stilt drink you british have always been able to muddle through you may even muddle through this one but it will write finis to the oncemighty british empire and perhaps its best this way after all the empire was shrinking like a twodollar allwool sweater if you couldnt end with a bang be satisfied with a snicker roamin around theres a haunted telephone booth in markham you dont believe it well we wouldnt cither if we hadnt heard it with our own two cars at least four other persons will vouch for the truth of this story for they like ourselves had the same experience it happened last week a motorist pulled his car up to the curb and a woman presumably his wife went into the booth to make a routine call suddenly in the midst of her conversation a voice from nowhere boomed help youre standing on top of inv head the lady was so startled by the sound that she reeled out through the door still clinging to ihe receiver her eves as big as saucers her husband not hearing the voice rushed to his wifes assistance thinking perhaps that she had just suffered some kind of epileptic tit theres a man trapped under the sidewalk she stammered incoherently i heard him i heard him the gentleman insisted that she had heard noth ing and that no person was located underground as the couple drove away the woman was heard to say ill not get a wink of sleep tonight later in the evening another un suspecting caller stepped into the same telephone booth from a rather convenient vantage point we watched him closely suddenly as before the same ghostlike voice hollered out will you please move youre standing on top of my head the caller this time a man wheeled around searching for the source of the sound seeing nothing and hearing nothing more he quickly completed his conversation and walked hurriedly away by this time our curiosity was arous ed to such a point that we decided to investigate the situation on our own we went through all the motions of placing a call even to dialing a fake number without warning the voice again echoed through the booth enclosure using words similar as before at the same time a couple a ladv and gentleman came on the scene and were within hearing dist ance of the voice the lady stood opcuinoutbcd with amaze ment her escort hearing it loo held tightly onto her hand did you hear that voice we asked stepping onto the side walk we sure did she replied where did it come from with that they both stepped into the booth to give it a try this time however nothing happened we all then went our separate ways were sorry that this story must end like some alfred hitchcock thriller but its still true weve since done a little sherlock holmes work on the matter but we dont intend to give away any secrets just remember the ncnt time you put through a paycall from a telephone booth in markham you may not be alone we attended the international dog show sponsored by the ontario county kennel club in the markham arena on saturday afternoon there were dogs everywhere all shapes sizes and dispositions we had a rather unfortunate intro duction to the competition when we were caught between wo rowing bulldogs bent on tearing one another to pieces fortunately just as we were contemplating how we could adjust to the use of a pair of artificial legs a huge great dane appeared on the scene and quickly separated the pug- nosed pugilists when it comes to dog showmanship pedi grees etc we wouldnt know a best of the show champion from a 48 variety holnz in the light of this animal ignorance we have always considered dogshow folk as a breed of animal nut who would groom a dachshund all day but scud their kids oil to school in their stocking feet we still think that a few are a trifle eccentric but after talking with many at the show on saturday our opinion on this subject has changed a little we posed this question directly to one chap who didnt look like the kind who would retaliate with a poke in the jaw some people collect stamps some people save old coins some folks train horses while others drive racing cars i personally enjoy breeding training and show ing dogs dont ask me why i just do stamps old coins horses and racing cars dont interest me a bit but i dont say that theyre not interesting hobbies how do you argun with an answer like that we talked with one lady a mrs keith bonner of toronto who was showing an old english sheep dog owned by her daughter bonnie it was a bcauli ful animal the first we have ever seen mrs bonner told us that she had been grooming and preparing peter patches for two weeks prior to the show and she was still brushing and combing him in preparation for his appearance before the judges eyes it was interesting to note the number ot entries from the clarcmonl stouftville gormley markham and unlonville areas the best of show in fact was a west highland white terrier from dreamland kennels in mark ham twp commenting on this trend to another animal ignoramus like myself the gentleman answered quietly were all going to the dogs last week a whole platoon of racebike riders rolled into stouftville at the conclusion of a 40mile hike from to ronto we talked with one of the competitors in the rcstair rant as he downed one hamburger and ten glasses of milk a member of the toronto cycle club he told us that races are held in both the provinces of ontario and oucbcc somo lasting several days this monlh one will be held between toronto and owen sound a new race bike can cost up to 200 and the highway speed range is around 30 miles per hour the special tires carry 130 lbs of air and can be chang ed in two minutes we noted that the men were in great physical condition and the only lady entry in the 30bike group looked in even better shape if you know what we mean weve all heard about the honest golfer is this really so waliy klcrnan markham plaza druggist will question the fact he tells us that he received one dozen ben hogan balls with his name printed plainly on each side over a period of several weeks he has lost them in the rough at the willows course near mongolia but nary a single one has been returned any golfer with a guilty conscience may re turn same to the store and no questions will be asked another little country church has closed its doors the united church at mt pisgah on cone 3 whitchurch twp held its final sunday service on june 27th the building was erected in 1870 on the july 1st holiday we witnessed a marvellous oc currence at cedar beach park mussehnans lake it was the occasion of ihe first baptist church congregational picnic from toronto and an estimated 800 negro men women and children attended the gathering we visited the wading pool where kiddles of both races mingled together in ihe water all enjoying the same privileges and not caring that the colour of their skin was different it wax the same elsewhere on the grounds and on ihe public beach governor wallace could have taken a lesson from it speaking of cedar beach park vcrn and mrs davies are continually improving their scenic
