features and shape this vehicle can be lived in quite comfort ably and that is the intention of its owner mr robert m bur- land main street east in stouffville strictly a hobby mr borland spends most of his spare time converting the bus his wife eva alo takes an activa interest in the project sitting proudly in mr burlands back vard the 1951 inter- ternational bus is presently undergoing some drastic modifica tions for example this bus wont carry 10 or 50 screaming children to school nor will it tote a number of sinwn teenagers to a football game rather it will carry the burtand family throughout ontario for their summer vacation bob burland got the idea of converting a bus after two years of towing a trailer behind his car no matter how good your hitch is he said trailers still bounce around the road surveying the possibilities of a bus he came upon a dealer in scarborough who sold them price about s500 bob learned that this dealer sells about 20 buses per year for this exact pur pose although he had never driven a bus hefore mr burland bravely climbed behind the controls and maneuvered it to the most likely testing ground the macdonald artier freewav satisfied with its performance he brought the four ton monster home since the date of purchase last winter the bus has practic ally become an entirely different vehicle the traditional yellow exterior is missing and is now cover ed with a two toned turquoise and white the interior passenger scats have been removed except for the one immediately behind the drivers seat the swinging doors will swing no more being replaced with a laminated plywood hinge door the glass in the rear emergency door was knocked on and replaced with sliding windows and all side windows have been graced with blue flow ered curtains four on the floor the standard transmission sixcylinder bus has eight for ward gears four in the low range and an equal amount in high range although he has not verified it bob expects lo get between ten and thirteen miles to the gallon the lank holds 22 gallons there are 17 feet nine inches of space behind the drivers seat total length of the bus is about 21 feet from wall to wall the distance is seven and a half feet walking about is no problem as there is six feet of space from floor to ceiling a senior electronic technician for c r snelgrove co in don mills bob is well acquainted with the different aspects of wiling required to light and heat the bus bob has installed a threeway elcctical system for his lights including six volt 110 volt and propane the stove situated near the rear of the bus is also propane controlled it is a threeburner beneath the stove is the refrigerator on the opposite wall is the sink complete with a hand pump and running water twenty gallons will be carried on hoard under and over the sink and over the stove are shelves for dishes etc about half way back on the right wall is a full length closet storage space is at a premium as each bed opens up to reveal compartments bunk beds the burland family including mr and mrs burland two of their three children and three youngsters from the childrens aid society will have no trouble finding sleeping quarters immediately behind the lone remaining passenger seat is a bed while directly across from it are bunk beds two beds ar in the very back of the bus with two yet to he added mr burland hopes to have the upper hunk built in such a way that it folds partially into the wall and partially into the ceiling when not in use the seats are covered in yellow upholstery and padded with foam rubber bob said that a lot of shopping around was required to find the rubber he finally picked it up at a canadian tire store four inches thick and in four foot strips he learned from another tire company how to cement the pieces together mr burland is pondering the idea of retiling the floor at present the holes still show marking the spots where the original seats were situated twoway radio one of the most important and unique features of the bus will be a twoway radio familiar with their operation bob feels that in case of emergency the radio will provide a direct link to different receivers he will also carry a complete line of tools lor small repairs should they crop up the vacation to slart in august will be a complete circuit of ontario with stopoff points at renfrew pembroke north bay kirkland lake timmins chapleau sault ste marie sudbury parry sound and a number of smaller parks the trip about 1400 miles complete will last about three weeks bob expects to travel around 100 miles per day if one place is not suitable that is if it does not hav all the necessary conveniences we will double out days journey to 200 miles he said bob chose the slop off spots by referring to an ontario parks guide he looked for the places that offered the most facili ties such as camp site water nearby restaurants etc the bus when purchased came equipped with a first aid kit and fire extinguisher these are essential in any wellprepared trip bobs wife eva with her assistance has added that all- important womans touch making the bus a homelike affair with the completion of the vacation in august bob is hop ing to get down into the united states next year listed as a commercial vehicle the owner is required to have his name visible on the bus mr burland will print his nam in two inch letters near the door and print stouffville beneath it the insurance rates were not as high as he first anticipated only thing left now is a suitable name for the bus bobs not sure whether hell bother with it the young ladies that comprise stouffvilles only powder- puff hall team have finally started batting balls rather than just eyelashes the league has had quite a bit of trouble getting start ed but it looks as though theyre on the way now the girls played their first home game last thursday one week after they were scheduled to open at the park and believe it or not this club looks good they blew the game 65 but really now thats no indication that these femmes in spikes cant play ball dreading the worst and expecting the clubs to go around the batting order three or four times every inning we were very impressed with sharpness and accuracy of both clubs east gwillimbury were the guests and both teams came up with some mighty fineball playing the girls play all their home games on thursday nights at the park beginning at 8 pm coach john nesbitt and ablebodied assistant fred moors are to be commended for the way they have this club shaped up the markham aces outhit richmond hill dynes 13 to 8 but the hits were overshadowed by walks as the aces dropped the contest 91 ted matthews started or the aces and with no relief in sight ted was forced to hurl the com plete game matthews did not pitch one of his better games and his control was not sharp ted walked nine men which ac counted for 7 runs the aces battled back with four runs but fell short as the whole club seemed to lack drive the dynesmen tapped matt hews for eight scattered hits with pitcher jack rainbow showing the way with a double and a single watson wilson house gayrian robson and bronby added singles aces batsmen were led by bill johnsons double and two singles while mike huggins followed with a double and a single phil hebert had two hits and jack robinson berrie mc griskin ken beckett jim john son morris procenko and jack watson added singles aces still lead the vk sirn coe league by two points but east gwillimbury and rich mond hill have two games in hand a bad blow to the arcs club is the news that boh lefty el lis is sidelined with a bark injury next home game for he ace is thursday uonighu july sth at morgan park game time is 815 pm newmarket rally beats aces 54 errors on the play aces scored their final run in the third inning when mcgris kin drove home hebert wayne evans aces starting pitcher was rapped for five hits and five runs he was relieved by southpaw ted matthews in the top of the fourth what seemed to be a batters paradise turned into starvation for both clubs when from the fifth inning lunney and matt hews gave up no hits and no runs to
