increase of 10- 337 over the 1964 figure mr marshall mcmurchy president of the organization told the council that the 65 i- mount was only an estimate he said that a shortage in staff experienced last year had been overcome but this would mean increased costs brigadier hill of the salva tion army said that in 1963 they were caring for 24 unwed motherstobe he noted that in 1964 this number in york county had increased to 35 and the trend was continuing up ward in total brigadier hill said that his organization was look ing after 4000 such cases this being only a portion of the ov erall figure planted in pots and trained on a trellis or other support in hanging baskets or in window boxes varieties of english ivy are the most popular they are highly tolerant to dry air high temperatures and fluctuations in temperature which makes them easy to grow in modern homes there are several varie ties some dwarf and others that arc taller with larger leaves some varieties have variegated foliage horticulturists with the onta rio department of agriculture suggest placing the plants in well lighted locations but not direct sunlight they require plenty of water and need syring ing frequently to keep the dust off the foliage to propagate root tip cuttings in sand or water if placed in water remove the bottom leaves so that they will not rot keep the cuttings in diffused light un til they are rooted and then pot ted in a soil mixture high in organic matter other foliage plants which may also be propagated by cut tings are german ivy grape ivy and kenilworth ivy the least boring at the most dis graceful but such is the form of our parliamentary democracy the past is always hard to part with and a flag to many people is a highly emotional issue ail this was behind us on tuesday as with great and befitting dig nity the old ensign came down and the banner bearing the em blem for which canada is known all over the world rose with pomp and ceremony all across the country and in deed all over the world similar ceremonies were held as the bright red maple leaf took its place on canadian offices schools and embassies and how will the children of cedar grove remember the day canada received her first flag in cedar grove mrs ree- sor conducted a simple ceremo ny for her small pupils and there was lots of talk about the new and the old flag the new banner has not yet been deliv ered to the public schools but when it is an outdoor ceremo ny will be held to raise it in locust hill grades 4 and 5 and 6 listened to the entire broadcast of the occasion from ottawa english and french and discused the flags and the debate afterwards at robinson school they had received their flag our grade 7 and 8 students were given a complete and fitting ceremony in which they all took part anrf during which the noble old en sign came down and the new red maple leaf took gayly to the markham breezes at the high school the old flag the union jack incident ally was removed and the new flag flown before the students arrived at school and three hours before it was legally our canadian flag there was no ceremony a national historic occasion passed at mdhs prac tically unnoticed why saturday turned out to be a fine day and night for skating in spite of the sloppy week pre ceding it in the afternoon the sunday school skating party was held and in the evening the high c held their party with a social gettogether afterwards at marion mccowans home in markham congratulations a little late to don cornelius who brought home two beautiful large white fish from lake simcoe last week we extend our heartfelt sympathy to alf smith whose father died last week and to the children who lost a grand father mothers club will be held on feb 18th at the home of mrs ionson program will be party planning and ideas to a little white cottage beside a lake where we can relax to our hearts content and consider our leisure time well spent just puttering around or reading a book sometimes go ashing with a worm on a hook sharing with nature a few peaceful hours observing the trees the birds and the flowers taking some pictures to store away and review again on a wintry day filling our lungs with pure fresh air forgetting tomorrow brings 1 reh work and care till the red sun sinks behind a hill and the sounds of twilight are hushed and still then slowly homeward we make our way with
