lifespan brings a healthier stronger family into the world see them grow with diminishing fear about infectious diseases becoming epidemic and has a belter certainty of better health in his later years he will be helped to get purer water and milk free of disease germs his recreation will be safer because public swimming pools have water clear enough to detect undersurface accidents and pure enough to minimize infec tions a watching brief will be kept by public health nurses on the health of his children in classrooms which include emo tional health early alerts are given on these matters in which the family physician should be consulted for his daily pennies he has an organized health patrol which saves him many dollars in treatment fees in artificial devices that replace or aid body functions affected by prevent able disease and income lost through being ill from them yet so unobtrusive has been the revolution so modest the participants about their ach ievement that we consistently underplay and underpay their contribution to our common good and welfare few doc tors and nurses in the public service whose job demands an extra year of university train ing are rewarded adequately for the responsibilities they bear from the county medical officer of health up to the pro vincial deputy minister of health who carries the admin istrative responsibility of the most technical and complex de partment of government we allocate smaller incomes than are earned by many of their colleagues in private practice and those private incomes are not excessive when measured against the life and death re sponsibilities doctors bear plus the heavy cost of their educa tion through the sheer chance of occupation i have been learn ing of the tremendous force for good that is ours through the workers in our public health units as a ratepayer in york county i am even more willing to be taxed for an adequate public health service than 1 am for adequate police fire pro en its potential has been limit ed by economic structures i feel the impending loss of the total public health medical staff in york county is a matter of grave concern regardless of the various sound personal rea sons for we are apt to become acutely aware that as in the other medical arts the shortage of qualified personnel to fill ihcse posts will have a severe negative effect a man who a- chieved in public health circles the enviable reputation o doc tor king was bound to receive opportunities for significant status in his profession but one cant help wondering if we the ordinary citizens and taxpayers should have aimed at giving the york county health unit and its medical staff the status of significance they deserve york county is of the size and population of the province of prince edward island it is in this perspective that we should view our many county services including health doubtless some improve ments could be made if the proper budget seems too great perhaps we should ask if pub lic health isnt one of those ser vices that has grown beyond the containment of local boun daries and should be wholly supported on a broader tax base than partially at present perhaps too we should ask if the constitution of local boards of health should be as permis sive as it is so that it becomes made up largely by those whose first concern is a minimum tax ratethe county councillors does it not make sense that an officer of the county medical society should always be a member i dont know the answer to these for im only a layman but having had an opportunity to learn something of the vast importance of the public health unit to the wellbeing of citiz ens in this county and in other areas where health depart ments are organized it is hoped that this great work will soon receive the recognition and support we owe it above all let us honour adequately these whose vision and care for the wellbeing of their fellow citi zens brought them to be work ers in
