prove our current account def- icit with the united states in j 2s62 this amounted to 1116- j 000000 and in 1963 1153000- 000 approximately one half of i the total canadian current am ount deficit is caused by the importation of united states auto parts in order to correct this large deficit a new auto motive parts policy was initiat ed in 1963 canadian manufac turers under the plan would re ceive a tariff duty rebate on ex ports which in effect has en couraged the production of au tomotive components in can ada the problem is of immense magnitude when you consider that the united states vehicle and parts imported into canada represented 522 million dollars in the first 11 months of 1963 an increase of 62 million dol lars over 1962 while canadas exports in automotive parts and vehicles total only 33 million dollars in all of 1963 the drury plan is already producing results total exports of parts and finished cars to the united states in january of this year more than tripled january of 1963 the trend is continuing the mccord corporation of de troit will build 100000 radia tors worth 2 million dollars in canada for us cars during the 1965 model year i due to volume soins down the drain with the new policy in troduced by the minister of in dustry to produce automotive parts for export carl e scott pres of ford of canada said there must be the assurance of long term continuation of the drury program regardless of changes of government in order to pro vide the automotive industry with justification for the capi tal investment which will be necessary to meet the objective of the program 1 believe the honourable paul martins statement at the press confer ence clearly outlined the can adian governments intention and that is nothing that occur red during the
