tgt 7 the stourryttle tribune tiursdiy apr 9 m 1 editorial are you stili using that stringy kid stuff dont be too hard on mr cass dont be too hard on mr fred cass recently resigned attorney- general of ontario for the legisla tion which he proposed to deal with organized crime in ontario the ne cessity for the stern measures which the former minister brought forward may b egreater than many people would like to think we have seen the manner in which the law is flouted in the united states by big labour bosses racket eers and gangsters we make snide remarks about the sloppiness of the courts such as evidenced at dallas recently we dont like this disre spect for the law and think the stern est measures should be taken to curb these people who we know to be guilty and can get away with laugh ing at the law all this being as it is dont lets be too hasty in condemning our own legal minds with being too harsh there is organized crime in the pro vince and it will take the sternest laws to bring those involved to their just due unless we wish to be laughed at in the same manner in which our american friends are ridiculed in the united states this freedom of the individual has been carried so far that the law has great difficulty in curbing those who are a public men ace this should not be lets not overplay this individual rights cry until it becomes a detriment to the public as a whole there is no question but that much sterner measures are needed to deal with racketeer types than those whose crimes are petty and we are sure that the freedom to exercise this stern restrains on such individuals was all that mr cass had in mind those individuals who go about shouting their freedoms and carrying placards would be the first to shout equally as loud if gangsterism and its tripe was allowed to laugh at the laws of our land the big city news media are quick to crucify any government offi cial at the slightest provocation and delight in doing just that if the public behaves itself it has little to fear from the law its possible that parts of mr cass proposed changes needed a little watering but we dont believe that the stern measures which he believes are necessary are as far astray as many would have us be lieve individuals must take some responsibility we believe that whitchurch township council was quite justified in turning down any request to spend 11000 to place warning lights at the pine orchard railway crossing we dont believe either that they needed any excuse that they were already committed to three other crossings in the township individ uals must take some responsibility for their actions when approaching railway crossings it is hardly fair that just be cause some individual is negligent other ratepayers should suddenly be required to put up thousands of dol lars there are a host of sideroad crossings in the township where motorists must approach with ex treme caution if they are to see a train approaching a driver must take some responsibility if he fails to do so and drives blindly on when he is aware of possible danger the fault is entirely on his own shoulders in the case of the crossing in ques tion there is ample vision and cer tainly no excuse for anyone to be hit by a traain it is the same old story people will simply not take ordinary precaution and there follows a great outcry for more protection it would cost a fortune to protect people from their own carelessness at every rail way crossing in the township and council is right in not calling upon the ratepayers to make this expendi ture must know the facts the future status of the police village of unionville now rests in the hands of 300 eligible voters if the attendance at the public meeting on thursday evening of last week is any criterion then an estimated 275 of the electorate are both ignorant of the facts involved and disinterested in the fate of their community to remain as a police village or return to the fold of markham town ship is a matter of vital importance to the people and yet only a hand ful of residents could take the time and trouble to attend this lethargic attitude is synon ymous with our times and the popu lace of unionville is the same as youll find anywhere a couple of insulting comments were tossed about concerning a news papers lack ol publicity re the nom ination and election of trustees in the village ignorance is no excuse the trouble is people take the let joe do it attitude and all the publicity in the world will not force citizens to accept a responsibility if it can be shoved off on the shoulders of some one else every once in a while the good joes decide to call it quits and the municipal machine grinds to a halt if resident ratepayers are not interested in learning the facts of the issue at hand then there is no guarantee that they will be interested in marking a ballot in the forthcom ing plebiscite if however some ac tion had been taken without a ballot vote of the electorate then these same citizens who were absent on thursday would have raised a cry that could be heard to high heaven pressure from two sides the distribution of police costs across the municipality has caught the council of the township of whit church squarely in the centre of two pressure groups on one side is the farmer asking for a 90 exemption on his land on the other side is the urban resi dent voicing opposition to such a move in between the two is the council so far the council has elected to sit on the fence on the issue and let the hounds do their baying from below sooner or later they will be forced to put their feet on the ground and whatever the decision one group or the other will be nipping at their heels we feel that the police program should be worked out on an equal costsharing basis and the percen tage of the farm land exempted should be arrived at in this way ottawa report r by michael starr mp the time limit on the 500 bonus on homes constructed in winter months has been extend ed to april 15th there were some 35000 applicants and only 6000 were able to qualify for this bonus by march 31st the original date set for qualifica tion it will be interesting to see how many more will quali fy in the additional two weeks for this bonus the minister of finance has already announced that this program will continue next winter this announcement may have an effect on home construction in the summer months an additional 4 sales tax on building materials has now been imposed as of march 31st making a total of 8z now ap plicable an additional 3 will be imposed on december 31st of this year making a total of 11 applicable on building ma terials and raising the cost of a house by 11 to the purchaser the price of homes has been increasing since this tax has been imposed and the purcha sers are being faced with this additional cost continued on back pajc tljf touffutll tribune esta pushtu ims member of the canadian weekly newspaper whose bones are as brittle as soda crackers who asks me did you have a nice easter holiday some school teachers have a nice easier holiday and good luck to them but english teachers are not among them english teachers have the same sort of holiday a bus driver would have if he were given a week off and old he was to drive a bus from halifax to vancouver in the next seven days when the holidays began i had examination papers to mark which represented a total of about 480 student writing hours they could have produced the works of shakespeare in the same time this in turn means that i have ttbout 100 hours of marking time no complaints its part of the job but things were a little more complicated this year the women of the house came down with flu just as the holidays began the result was thatinstead of silting quietly in my study and having countless cups of tea and coffee innumerable beers and sandwiches brought me to keep me going i found myself trotting up and down stairs about six hours of each day bearing up tempting little things on trays bearing down dirty dishes while my pillars of papers sat and gathered dust results of turning the old man loose with the grub for a few days was interesting my wife has almost decided to become a permanent invalid my kids realize that their father has an other brilliant unsuspected dimension the old lady was feeling horrible with ihe flu but there didnt seem much wrong with her appetite she gained about eight pounds of course shes not used to my lunches instead of the soupandsandwich routine shes accustomed to they consisted of something like this glass of sherry grilled sau sage with butterfried mushrooms and cheese omelette tossed salad blueberry pie and ice cream coffee brandy cherry- centred chocolates the kids weie a bit shaken by some of my casseroles perhaps the most successful was the lasagna basis a can of lasagna egg noodles in tomato and meat sauce simmer in oven for ten minutes add layer of mushrooms layer of strong cheese layer of thinsliced salami layer of onion rings layer of mild cheese bake in oven sprinkle with paprika parsley chives cinnamon nutmeg wild oats or anything else that will sprinkle serve with hot crusty rolls and stand back the reason there are no great women chefs theyve no imagination my wife hacks up some lettuce tomato and celery and calls it a salad if shes feeling particularly exotic she might throw in some sliced green pepper my salads besides these basics contained great chunks of cheese all colors whole green onions peeled grapes shredded lemon raw carrots quartered dill pickle jelly beans left behind by ihe easter bunny the whole doused in a dressing made of four raw eggs mixed with tartar sauce ketchup mayonnaise mustard and vinegar i have only two things to say about the grand culinary adventure a the food budget is shot for the next six weeks b where can i buy a good secondhand automatic dish washer the tnsfs m m anne ross nutritionists tell us that teenagers arent getting enough milk not just any teenagers but our own growing sons and daughters right here in ontario so perhaps ved better take a close look at our own family situation younger children probably get their needed pint of milk every day at least it is to be hoped they do but what about the teenage son or daughter their bodies need a pint and a half of milk a day how many are actually consuming ihis- daily quota if they arent chances are they arent getting all the nutrients they require for the demands they make upon their brains and bodies the problem is we cant just fell big johnny or jane they need more milk now than ever in their lives theyll prabably react with milk is just kid stuff so heres what they should know and what we too should know about how important milk is to them i got my information straight from the dairy food service bureau s its pretty realistic lets start with the calcium and phoiphorus in milk you could say these minerals are to bones what steel and concrete are to the structure of a building for strength and durability plenty of structural building materials are required teenagers are undergoing tremendous growth spurts at this point in their jives and if theyre to grow strong and healthy thsy need a good basic bone structure and calcium and phosphorus are the main building materials for the job milk and other dairy foods are the best sources of calcium needed for good teeth healthy hair and strong nails milk of course is a good source of protein now protein is an essential part of all our body tissues its needed for growth and for repair and replacement of worn tissue and this replacement of tissue cells goes on continually ait through life we all need plenty of protein if we had to select the most important material to maintain the human body irom infancy to old age protein would be first choice milk is also an important source of many other mineral and vitamins too so essential to good health and resistance to disease all this sounds quite technical of course but in a nutshell we can condense all the data to this milk is the most nearly perfect food required for growing bodies and to maintain good health and our concern is to re that our growing chil dren get plenty of it if they dont like to drink it wc should include it in the foods we prepare then well all fat our milk quota editors mail stouffville ont april 2 1964 editor stouffville tribune dear sir we the executive committee of york county federation of agriculture wonder if the rural people of ontario and our gov ernment realize the impact of bill 54 on our property tax bills we do strenuously op pose the additional taxation that will be forced upon the ag ricultural industry it is a gen erally accepted fact in york county that if the urban dwel lers taxes increase 100 the farm taxes increase s300 this is mostly brought about by the fact that a farmers land a tool of his trade is taxed for edu cational purposes whereas the machines in a factory or the goods on a merchants shelf or the books in a lawyers library are not taxed for municipal purposes the farmer has only the pro ductive value of his soil from which to pay taxes the returns that he receives for various types of farming operations an average o 175000 for 1034 of ontarios best farmers with an average of 219 acres is varified in the ontario farm management report processed by oac this proves the farm ers inability to pay exorbitant taxes the benefits of large area ad ministration may provide bet ter facilities we dont argue this but certainly not to the ex tent that the farmers will be required to shoulder more than the lions share of the cost the ability of the teacher determin es the quality of education giv en the children we may compare area schools with a new cadillac who can deny its qualities but then how many of us can afford them with an overall increment in teachers salaries full lime jan itors and maintenance men school buses operated by full- time union drivers townships having to hire 24 hour road sanding and snow plowing ser vices and general increased maintenance of township roads many many farmers face a tax increase of 100 to 300 in view of these points the york county federation of ag riculture prepared a brief and presented it to the legislative committee of the provincial government asking that they delay any action on the con solidation of rural schools into township areas until such time as a study of all the effects on rural taxation could be made a number of people from all sections of ontario were pres ent and spoke in support of our brief in effect our legislators turned a deaf ear on us and many other rural delegations and said without even consid ering the peoples ability to pay your tax problems dont con cern the department of educa tion we dont care whether you want area schools or not you are going to have them they then immediately passed the bill for the third reading this last view is personal but the recent proposed police le gislation is proof enough for me that the welfare of ontario cit izens is not the prime concern of our legislators they dont ask what is wanted or needed they dictate i believe this is reason enough that the present provincial government should be forced to go to the people of ontario for a mandate before continuing in office sincerely ted barry office supplies business machines tribune office supplies roamin around it would appear that santas house although presently unoccupied has become a permanent residence on main street one of these days assessor lloyd turner will take its measure and slap a tax on the structure on the night of feb 11th a grinding twocar crash on the maruuunwhitcnurch townline eat of gormley took the 1u of a young glasgow father of three that was more than eight weeks ago no charges have been laid and to our knowledge no date has yet been set for an inquest no accident in this are within recent years has aroused more public concern and many people including this writer feel that too many que tlons are still unanswered in connection with this tragedy and that action on the matter is long overdue athas murray mcdowell has one of the stralghtest eyes in stouffville on wednesday night of last week he hit the s50 jackpot in a midgame puckshooting competition at the arena the drive from centreice went through a small opening in a target placed in front of the net it is the first time in three seasons that anyone has accomplished the feat although some have come quite close the public meeting on rural zoning held in the pickering twp hall at brougham on wednesday night of last week attracted a large turnout of resident ratepayers it is becoming increasingly evident that the farmer is taking a more active interest in items of personal concern in pickering planning director john faulkner appears to have an excellent grasp on nutters pertaining to zoning and related problems although a comparative newcomer to this post ho is an excellent public relations man for the municipality and it is only too bad that there are not more of his kind to go around the letter in last weeks issue of the tribune fiom the trustees of ss no 17 pickeiing twp altona with lcspect to surplus funds in the boards account answered this writers question perfectly we feel that the rural trustees who sliced their sectional rates to the bone this year prior to the onearea transformation in 1965 aie to be commended for their foie- sight maruhum village iwliee must lake the cake for nerve with a capital n they recently laid a liquor charge against a local youth in the town the son of the reeve no less certainly no one can accuse that force with playing favourites would you believe it with snowflakes still in the air the stouffville brigade answered its first grass are call of the season last week we only hope that this early start is not a sign of any definite trend as if aspirants to council positions arc not scarce enough it is unlikely that keeve alvln kedshaws alleged experience with an irate ratepayer will encourage more wouldbe office holders to toss their hats in the ring since the matter is scheduled to go before the courts miff said after viewing the scenery along the valley farm road in pickeiing twp last week we can readily understand why lady deputyreeve mrs jean eruptions that could possibly be created its a sad sight unionville skating star debbl wilkes will receive an award from the dept of education for her accomplishments in the field of physical fitness and amateur sport the presentation promoted and approved by hon wm g davis minister of education will take place in the legislative chamber at queens park on may 5th and will be followed by a reception in the members dining hall mr davis is to be commended for his fine act of recognition for a fine young athlete fred and geo scott former longarmed defencemen with maikham millionaires have changed little in appearance since the days when they formed a potent blueline barricade in the old arena fred now 45 and geo 43 will return to active ranks in a onenight stand on friday evening when the old millionaires take on the former nhl greats at markham pickering councillor john campbell raised the ire of many brougham residents on monday evening of last week when ha voted against an expenditure that would improve the facilities in the townshipowned hall in the brougham community mr campbell suggested that in lime the building would be replaced by a more modern structure in the south and its use to the whole of the municipality would be limited his view was greeted by cries of contempt from the delegates but down deep many feel that the handwriting is on the wall while bouquets are being handed out to the clipper hockey club and their promoters the tribune should not forget the president of the organization ken betz who has assisted this team both financially and in other ways for several seasons now the proposed zoning bylaw for musselmans lake will come up for further discussion at a ratepayers meeting in toronto on april 19lh the location of the meeting is the broad view ymca building and a large turnout of cottageowners is anticipated the meeting had originally been called for april 121 h but his has since been changed unionville citizenry could not be coaxed away from their television sets on thursday night even with the future of their community at stake a move that would change the status of the police village back to markham township custody was the subject for discussion but such an item of importance could not compete with the stanley cup playoffs a mere handful of personnel put in an appearance and some of these left early to catch the third period of play assinck bros of markham have acquired a patent for their gravel conveyors manufactured in their thriving factory north of the village they are now in the process of establishing dealers throughout canada the factory employs a staff of 22 and business annually is reported near the a million dollar mark any success currently enjoyed by these men can be attributed o hard work and plenty of it we would hope that the promoters of the jehovah witness church at the corner of montreal and stouffcr sts in town do not plan to leave the structure in its present unfinished state for very long it is an eyesore and only tends to downgrade other adjacent properties it is said thai many a male has two left feet on a dance floor apparently some markham district howler lias the same problem on the alleys since wo left bowling shoes are missing from the premises parties involving the teenage set where liquor is the apparent sign of a good time arc becoming all too frequent in the clarcmont area according to reliable reports parents who should have more sense insist in keeping the drink too readily available in their homes and the temptation is too great for the kids to turn down the most recent young peoples drinking session prior to the easter vacation period is the talk of the town but no one including the majority of adults appear too concerned over the mafer they should be a quantity of hale literature currently in circulation in toronto and other populated centres was presented to this writer recently for a check of lis content in our opinion it is
