scientific re search into the early years of christianity as well as firsts of later history and firsts that blend fact with myth setting the date december 25 was first assign ed as the date for the administered by the metropolitan toronto and re gion conservation authority wont have to fear going hungry this winter the authority has laid in about two tons of mixed feed which will go to supply its 40 bird feeding stations located in the nine conservation areas throughout metro toronto and region the feed was grown and har vested on authority lands and consists of millet wheat and oats to which was added sor ghum sunflower seeds peanuts and cracked corn authority field officer murray johnston also points out that the mtrca has established natural food plots in some of its areas and plans eventually to have such plots in all its areas these plots are planted with corn sorghum millet buckwheat sunflowers and soybeans and thus provide natural eating places for birds in setting up a feeding station in ones backyard johnston sug gests that it be placed in a shel tered location screened by trees or shrubs and should be high enough to be out of the range of cats a collar or ferrule can be affixed to the stem of the feeder to discourage squirrels and he adds that some feed thrown on the ground for the squirrels will keep them from trying to raid the birds feeding station suet obtained from the local butcher also provides a tasty treat for our feathered friends who remain during the winter months johnston says a simple suet feeder can be made by bor ing out a number of holes in a piece of a log filling the holes with suet and then hanging the log in a tree the most popular bird species which winter in the metro tor onto region are the evening gros beak chickadee nut hatch blue jay tree sparrow and junco new years party can be happy time planning a new years party be sure that it is in keeping with the happy spirit of the holiday make a list of things to do dont try to make up a schedule just have a list of games and ac tivities and be ready to suggest something when and if the party begins to appear dull remembering that the new year celebration in old china was both lengthy and happy you might inject a chinese theme into your celebration you can begin with new year resolutions in writing the resolutions try to pick out humorous weaknesses these might read i most pro foundly resolve to do setting up exercises each morning thereby stretching my weak frame no more despicable smoking for this insignificant creature or this no 1 boy resolves to study his mathematics one hour every eve ning men and boys will like chinese getup two persons sit on the floor back to back and lock arms the first to get to his feet without unlinking arms is the winner for children if the children are restless have them go to a rather large room to play catching the dragons tail this game is like crack the whip and requires space the children place their hands on each others shoulders forming a line the first person is the dragons head the last one its tail with the line intact the dragons head attempts to catch its tail when the first person succeeds he goes to the end of the line as the tail and so on since all parties need refresh ments humble nourishment for your superior guests should be in keeping with the chinese theme you might serve chinese tea and chinese almond cakes or nut cookies candied fruits and nuts are also chinese delicacies to greet the illustrious new year you will want to have ready plenty of noiscmakers confetti and streamers according to an old chinese superstition the noise will frighten away evil spirits greek god cronus became time symbol chronometry is the science of measuring time a project that has interested man since his earliest days on earth the word comes down to us as sociated with cronus the greek god once hailed as lord of the uni verse as a corruption of the word cronos which means time cronus supposedly wss warned that one of his children would dispose of him and so vowed to devour them at birth when a child zeus was born cronus wife rhea hid the child away and pre sented a stone to cronus instead everything ended happily ac cording to the legend cronus dis gorged the stone along with previ ous children he had swallowed zeus later dethroned his father and became the chief god of the greek pantheon cronus as we said earlier be cause of the similarity of names he became confused with the word for time someone placed an hour glass in his hand someone else added a scythe and the world came o know him as father time festive wreaths and garlands made of evergreens cones and herbs are nowadays closely linked to the celebration of christmas the custom of mak ing such garlands for
