stouflvilie tribune stouhville ontario an article in your paper last week stated that the members of the council did no know why i had resigned as assessor of the township of uxbridge i thought i had made my point quite clear to them as i had pointed out that an assessor has the same rights as any other citizen as far as assessment is concerned and these rights they failed to grant me even al though i had giver them in stances of comparable assess ment in the township it was also noted that reeve n hogg is in favour of county wide assessment i wish to heartily endorse his stand on this matter county wide as- sessment would eliminate a reeve and members of a coun- cil sitting as a group as the court of revision and this in turn would eliminate biased decisions as the court would have no petty politics to influ ence their decisions thus all citizens would be assured of a fair hearing i further feel that the citizens of the township should determine the stand future councillors take regard ing county wide assessment and keep this in mind prior to the next election mr hogg ilso stated that he was fed up with the way- things were going and well he might so might the councillors and also the citizens of the township of uxbridge here are a few discrepancies i have uncovered during my term as assessor a whole groups of buildings not shown on the field cards and therefore not previously assessed b numerous homes with mod ern conveniences installed and were not assessed c numerous homes listed on the field cards as being up to 40e unfinished and which in fact had been finished for a number of years these homes received reduced assessment d buildings listed with incor rect dimensions this reduced the assessment some times up to 30 e buildings listed on the field cards as uninhabitable and in fact were quite habitable and had not been assessed as such f houses of a thousand square feet or more not listed or in some cases with a nominal as sessment of only a few hundred dollars g gravel pits operating in the township and not assessed as such when in fact one pit had been under option to the township for a year and yet was still not assessed as a gravel pit h in 1962 some s40000 was collected for dog- tax in 1963 over 150000 was collected i found some two hundred people not listed on the assess ment roll which at 300 per capita grant from the province meant a loss of approx 60000 to the township in view of the above mr editor i think many people in the township should as the reeve states be fed up with what we have long ago yours very truly r f clarke rr 1 uxbridge ttit stouftyim tribune tkirsdjy november 21 1963 pi 3 ents but one another in short we have a problem concerned people seek a solu- tion but the answer is definitely j stouffville out our modern society is posses sed with all the seeds necessary for its own destruction and now they are planning to add one more straw to the camels back by the legalization of thomas stouffville tribune dear editor in regard to the editorials that have appeared in the paper the past weeks stating our service clubs could be wrecked if the police carried out the crack down on gambling i strongly disagree im sure our service clubs are built on a better foundation than a flimsy game of chance so now they look for another source of in come to help carry out their many very worthwhile commu nity projects but its not the end of the road or the end of the clubs either the govern ment states gambling is illegal whether for charity or not does not remove the fact that this procedure is out of bounds ac cording to the legal code of canada if the service clubs are in need of more revenue its high time the citizens of every community woke up to the facts and needs of their clubs and supported them with what ever be necessary for them to carry on efficiently instead of expecting them to break the law in order to gain financial help for their wonderful work it is not government legisla tion we need to legalize gambl ing it is community education so our clubs serving our young people organizing sports and upholding various community activities can step forward in these fields and know the citi zens will support their endea vours to completion you and i are to blame for the situation that now exists dont stand back and expect the government to introduce drastic measures to remedy the problem for watered down laws gambling or otherwise only lead to great grief step forward mr and mrs citizen and lend your support to your community now tomorrow may be too late
