editor of stouffviue tribune dear sir 1 woul like to make a correc tion to a statement found in the report last week under the heading local council oks two year term 6463 it stated no one expressed any opposition to the move this statement is not correct i am aware there was no reporter present therefore the informa tion you received would be hearsay and this could be the reason for the error on oct 15 the council in vited the school board and puc to a joint meeting held in the committee room at the council chambers there were 2 members from the school board 2 members from the puc and the town clerk along with the council with the exception of one member ab sent through illness the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possibilty and the advisability of a 2 year term for all elected mem bers of the various departments there was some discussion on the advantages and disadvan tages of a 2 year term in lieu ol the one year term at presem the clerk was requested by the promoter of this 2 year idea to read certain parts from the municipal act which definitely states a council can pass a by law authorizing a 2 year term without a vote of the people but the act does not say it has to be done this way before the voters have an opportunity to say whether or not they want a 2 year term for their elected members our neighbours in markham village are dealing with the same question but have taken a more sane and sensible atti tude and are preparing to take a vote on the question at this fall election during the meeting each member present was asked to express his own personal opini on on the question i suggested we make preparations lor a vote on the 2 year question this fall rather than adopt such a dictatorial attitude my suggestions were refer red to as a mild objection im wondering how violent one must get to be considered more than a mild objection the promoter of this 2 year idea asked the clerk lor a res olution that had been previous ly prepared and it was just a formal matter of moving the resolution and getting a sec onder which was done the resolution authorized the clerk to prepare a bylaw to permit elections biennial and all elected members would be in office for a 2 year period instead of one year as at pres ent the whole thing reminded me of those elections where there is only one name on the ballot and the taxpayer has lost some rights and privileges by not having an opportunity to express an opinion by the ballot method there is an old adage that says he who pays the fiddler calls the tune i am afraid the taxpayer is fast com ing to the place where he pays for the addling and someone else calls the tune and he simp- lemonville mr alfred hunter is at pres ent visiting with mr and mrs hume macpherson for a few days
