p the stouffville iri5un tfcy odofe 3f 1963 reeve scott likely to seek tenth term nomination nov 29 election december 7 nine years ago john sher man scott accepted a nomina tion and was elected into the fray of pickering twp poli tics on friday evening nov 29th he will return to the same platform in the same hall to address many of the same rate payers who have accorded him solid support during a near de cade of service to the munici pality although he has not erbally committed himself those closest to the election cene are confident that reeve scott will remain in the politi cal picture for another two year term the election is scheduled for saturday dec th longest record reeve scott has the longest record of any member on the present day council in 1955 geo todd was the reeve and wm newman the deputy- reeve council members were wm lawson sid pugh and sherman scott mr scott serv ed in this capacity for two years and advanced to the dep- utvreeves post in 1937 where he served for an additional two year term he climbed to the reeveship five years ago and has held the position since that time this year he capped his career when elected to the post of warden of ontario county although born near orange- ville he has been a resident of the township for the past 20 years opposition unlikely to date there has been no suggestion that anyone will op pose the reelection of reeve scott the most likely candi date would be the deputy- reeve mrs jean mcpherson but such a move is highly im probable mrs mcpherson first elected to council in 195o has tasted defeat at the polls only to rally for a return engage ment she has been the central figure in some of pickerings hottest campaigns and while most women are busy watching television soap operas she is out inspecting rutted roads clogged culverts and dirtfilled ditches it is rumoured that pickering schoolteacher don ald hopkins will contest the seat in december mr hopkins has been a regular attendant at recent meetings and the report may not be entirely unfounded no other names have been mentioned council shakeup harvey spang is almost a sure bet to seek reelection in ward i in the townships oth er four wards some new faces may appear rumours persist that councillor milton mowbray will retire in ward ii although he may alter his stand during the next three weeks he is definitely one member ho pos sesses all the qualities of fu ture leadership materia and to bow out at this stage would prove a definite loss to the municipality in ward 3 coun cillor john greening may also bow out of the political spot light and the same decision may be followed by councillor ross deakin in ward 4 in ward 5 councillor hubert wank will likely seek reelec tion but may be opposed by ex- councillor clifford laycox mr laycox was defeated by mrs mcpherson in 1961 when he made a bid for the deputy- reeves post like councillor mowbray mr wank has been a definite asset to the 196263 council in pickering he could have a real battle on his hands however for mr laycox is wellknown in his area and boasts previous council experi ence reeve j sherman scott coop petroleum sales up feed sales drop petroleum sales at the clare- mont cooperative during the past year climbed to a record s127912 or an increase of s16 849 over the 1962 figure accord ing to a statement presented to the annual meeting in the greenwood united church on thursday evening of last week manager geo pearsall noted however that although a size able gain had been realized in this particular part of the com panys business feed sales had dropped by 30000 during the same period he suggested that the decline in feed purchases could be blamed in part by a change in feeding practices by some customers and the inabil ity of the local cooperative to handle bulk feeds in a competi tive manner he pointed out that bulk feed distribution had been considered by the direc tors but no positive move had been made to provide this serv ice to date the second top moneymaker in 1963 was fertilizers that showed a sales increase of 53400 over 62 store sales were up by 56000 and seeds increased by 54600 propane and coal were down slightly farm supplies remained about the same net sales in 1963 totalled s431 398 net savings for the year before patronage returns to talled s17015 with one excepiton the di rectors will remain the same for 1964 mr jim the con trol and direction of a county commissioner a vote on the issue will likely be placed on the agenda at the november sittings of ontario county council if approved the transfer would become effective in january 1964 the application resulted in a split vote of the township coun- cil with deputyreeve mrs jean mcpherson and councillors har vey spang and john greening voting against the proposal councillors milton mowbray ross deakin hubert wank and reeve sherman scott favoured the move although a shift in authority had been suggested earlier in the year there was no outward indication that the council mem bers were entertaining such a thought at this time township assessment com missioner delbert goslin said that he had not been consulted by the council on the transfer and learned of the proposed move when he read of the reso lution in the minutes of last assess conun delbert goslin weeks meeting he said that if the shift was finalized at the county level all books and rec ords would be turned over to the new commissioner he said he did not know if the local assess ment office would be transferred to the county building i can see points in favour of such a move and i can see points against it too he said he de clined to outline his personal views on the matter except to suggest that the council would relinquish its personal hold on assessment matters if the change became law to enter this system approval must be received by the minister of mu nicipal affairs to withdraw from it a similar sanction must be acquired from the minister mr goslin said that in lin coln county all municipal as sessments are handled through a county commissioner he said that to his knowledge the program had worked out quite well he did not know if all mu nicipalities in ontario county would ever bow to such a plan at 54 mr goslin joined the pickering twp assessment de partment nine years ago in de cember of the same year he succeeded mr ed jones as commissioner his
