the amercian medi cal association has discontin ued the advertising of tobacco in its journal the resolution concluded that in view o these facts and a sense of christian stewardship as well as a responsibility for the welfare of ones fellowmen it would seem to make total ab stinence from the production the distribution and the use of both alcohol and tobacco the only responsible policy for christians to follow program of education a various program of educa tion and social action was also authorized by the conference among other things it includes discussion meetings conferen ces and personal testimony by the members of local congrega tions the enlistment of scien tists physicians sociologists and social workers and the en couragement of public and church school teachers to use their opportunities to warn the young people of the harmful ef fects of liquor and tobacco specific objective named in the resolution included challen ging the deceit of liquor adver tising and maintaining an out look on life which assumes that the social graces may be achie ved without the use of that which is physically and morally harmful it encouraged the members of the church not to have any part in the production or distribution of tobacco or beverage alcohol the resolution called for a redemptive and enlightened at titude toward all users of liquor and tobacco and summoned the church to serious efforts to ward the rehabilitation of the 5000000 american alcoholics who with their families consti tute a population of 20000000 distressed persons the resolution adopted un
