t 8 the stouftyiue trisuni thanitj jm 27 t96j establish sanctuary on c e pegg farm editors mail rr 1 claremont june is 1963 editor the tribune stouffvillc ont dear sir with refercnc to the article in the tribune dated june 13 1963 tinder the heading many assessments i would like to point out to mr james that we have no right to pay a busi ness tax nor do wa uso our telephone for business the on ly business we do have is our own and we make a point of minding it as to tha condition of our property this is used lumber which i salvaged when i wreck ed the four houses on the west ride of tha brock road in the villaga of claremont i receiv ed no salary or commission for this job but i had a time eon- tract to remove said buildings i overran this contract and this accounts for the way in which the lumber is piled thera was not enough time this situation will be remedied when i have my holidays in september i do not intend this letter to be an excuse i am stating facts there is room for improvement in this commu nity which as yet has not been named there is no local imme- diata fire protection no school bus no speed limits etc etc these are the items that are far more important than the temporary condition of one residents property ronald c paterson in the early days of ironmak ing mollen iron was poured in to a sand bed where it ran thru a long groove or trough and thence into many other grooves fit right angles the bed there- lore looked like a litter of pigs nursing at the side of the moth er sow hence the name pig iron pig beds are becoming ohsolete hut pig iron is still the commercial and technical name given to crude iron the 100 aera farm premise tf mr c e edgie pegg claremont rr2 has been es tablished as a bird sanctuary and many varieties of all sizes and colours frequent the pro perty the portion fronting on the road is well signed and the owner has been troubled with few trespassers develop glen major wildlife area tha metro toronto and re- pion conservation authority has given its approval to a scheme that would acquire and develop a new forest and wild life area at glen major in ux- bridge township one of simi lar plan is already in operation at palgrave about 375 acres is involved in the proposed project its principal use will be as a fores try agriculture and recreation facility with provisions for fish ing and other outdoors sport mr pegg lias erected moie than forty bird houses and shelters on his own farm and fiva others in the district the majority are built dur ing the winter months and erected in the spring shown here is a nest of baby tree swallows five in number this house is located on a fence post in the middle of a hay field this rural setting is a common sight on the pegg farm note the bird housa containing a nest of young tree swallows behind the two grazing cows the adult birds are unusually tame and show no concern for uninvited visitors unless they mean danger to their brood the majority of birds are more quickly attracted to houses that are left unpaitited mr pegg has two nests of bluebirds and one is raising its second family this season a scarcity of fence posts on most farms is making the variety less plentiful this mother tree swallow was caught by tlia tribune camera as it came in lor a landing at the entrance of its home with a morsel of dinner for her hungry youngsters this variety of swallow are aerial acrobats like their cousins the barn and cliff swallows but they prefei the wideopen spaces rather than buildings and enclosures claremont district farm is paradise for birds a manmade sanctuary on the farm premises of mr c e edgie pegg rr 2 clare mont has become the summer home of hundreds of birds of many varieties everywhere the entire one hundred acres of property is alive with swallows blue birds doves robins wrens orioles grackles redwinged blackbirds meadowlarks and song sparrows near the road a pond and marsh attracts many types of water fowl including a blue heron and the almost extinct wood duck mr pegg has the front portion of his farm well signed and to date has en countered little trouble with irresponsible hunters with the influx of birds into the area in the spring they find nesting places ready and waiting in trees on fence posts and inside buildings mr pegg has constructed more than forty houses and shelters the majority located on his own farm and others situated on ad jacent properties in the district each house is made to fit the requirements of a particular species of bird one of these is a twostorey apartment size en closure that stands about thirty feet high on an elevated pole in the middle of a field one bluebird couple is raising its second family this summer mr pegg is concentrating his efforts on attracting bluebirds to his premises since with each passing season their numbers appear to become less iive dangerously the most precarious nesting place of all birds on the pegg farm is built by the cliff swal lows their ovalshaped home is glued to the side of the barn under the eaves the cor rect mixture of mud and water ingredients must be welded to gether to make the nest stick and it has not been un common for the home to crum- ble and fall forty feet to the ground if this is not enough concern for mom and dad cliff swallow the family is continu ally plagued by sparrows who find the readymade nest to their liking and often move in welcomed or not last summer there were thirty of these nests on the side of the pegg barn but less than a dozen now re main barn swallows who ap parently place more value on the lives of their young are satisfied to build indoors one nest was used for fifteen con secutive years tree swallows hying acrobats like their cous ins take advantage of home made houses erected on fence posts in the field mrs pegg betty finds the birds and their habits equally interesting with her cameras both movie and slide she has taken many fine photographs both mr and mrs pegg ate members of the oshawa naturalist club their meeting in may was held at the pegg farm site rare visitor mr pegg is confident that he had a rare bird visitor on his premises recently the descrip tion fits that of a cattle egret and only three of its kind have been seen in the entire prov ince mr alt bunker of dun- barton a noted authority is still checking out the report robins doves and grackles are the most common species last year a wild goose landed near the barn and nonchalantly strode right up to the pegg home it was kept in custody for a few days and then taken to the secord sanctuary near goodwood in uxbridge twp its a real education says mr pegg one can learn something new every day through the provision of homes in the summer and food in the winter the pegg family can in return enjoy
