rh 3 e stouffvlltf twsuni t3iury mty 1963 editorial adding more to the ontario legislature has had placed before it a compulsory pension scheme which on the surface would appear highly commendable there are however a few snags which should be considered already labor has voiced its disapproval since the plan is designed for only firms with 15 employees or more the scheme would also guarantee that the pension would be carried from one firm to another so that a workman could jump here and there without losing any credit this should undoubtedly please the workman the fellow who seems forgotten in the whole plan is the employer ha is expected to contribute a healthy slice to the pension and it would aeem only natural that he should ex pect to get some benefit for his doll ars many firms already have pension plans and frankly in addition to help ing the employee save up for his later years the plans are also hoped to be an inducement for skilled emoloyees to stay on the job under the new the burden etup this value will be totally gone small businesses are already carrying a considerable financial load for employees there is unemploy ment insurance fifty per cent of which is paid for by the employer many firms pay all or part of hospital plans for their employees the law forces the employer to do all the bookkeeping for his employees in come tax and remit to the revenue department he is also compelled by law to pay workmens compensation this is all very wonderful for the employee but we should take a fair look at both sides from the list above the law assumes that every employer is a big shot who makes all kinds of money while the employ ees do the work in many cases this is far from the truth there are many small businesses where the owner earns little more if any than do some of his employees from wages as we have pointed out before all this socialism is wonderful for the receivers but a close look should be taken at who is going to do all the paying a changing for almost a decade the council of the township of pickering has honoured its unsung municipal ser vants with an annual banquet and program in the brougham hall as we have pointed out in the past this gathering is an excellent idea that achieves much in the allimportant field of public relations at a minimum of cost familiar names are linked to gether with unfamiliar faces per sons we hear and read about are brought within handshaking dis tance of one another it is an informal reunion of people men and women important parts of a complex muni cipal machine as a representative of this newspaper it was certainly gratifying to pin point the personnel quite a horses have become such a rarety in this area that the sight of team working in a field will stop traffic even on the rural roads on friday afternoon on the 5th concession of markham we found ourselves drawn by such a scene a beautiful team of clydesdales as fine n pair as would grace any country fair were marching across a freshly- seeded land only a few fields away community who in their own way contribute their time some gratis in the inter est of a progressive pickering the township is going through a gradual but still noticeable evolu tion from rural to urban this trend was made even more obvious when one scanned the audience on friday evening there are still committees of fence viewers pound keepers and livestock valuators but the import ance of their positions are fast be coming lost the urban sprawl brings new demands new committees and new faces now there are committees for recreation committees for indus trial promotion and committees of adjustment its the trend of the times and no one really knows when or where the steamroller will stop sight a tractor worked away unnoticed forty years ago the tractor would have attracted all the interest and the horses wouldnt have been given a glance on sunday afternoon a horse and buggy formed part of the busy main street traffic in stouffville men women and children stopped and stared behind the redwheeled rig rolled a glittering 63 cadillac no one noticed colour ma the ontario legislature seems bent on continuing with its ridiculous debating on the colour of margarine finally last week after endless jabber ing over what shade should be allow ed on the grocery shelves it has now been made legal to colour the stuff so long as it is a considerably deeper yellow than butter this decision will do little but in furiate the groups that have been campaigning to make coloured mar garine legal and we can sympathize with their disgust the decision for rgarine a joke the deeper shade is only to butter up the farm lobby with what we be lieve is a disregard for the wishes of the majority of citizens if the sale of margarine is legal there should be no restrictions of any sort even if somebody wants to make it the color of a rainbow this latest move will only bring on further cam paigning and no doubt in the end the government will have to give in and take off all restrictions however the longer they wait to do so the sillier theyre going to look how forgetful can people be we doubt if the switch to daylight having time was ever more promin ently publicized but still thousands of residents found themselves still buried in their blankets thirty min utes before church we heard of many delinquent among the guilty churchgoers right here in stouffville and their only excuse was i forgot the tribune attempted to attract the attention of its readers with a front page notice but still wild domestic and inbetween has been giving me a bad time of it lately first of all a lady in bc wrote a letter giving me the devil for the way i dispose of kittens she doesnt know quite how i did it but she suspects that they suffered lady i can assure you that i suffered far more than they did my daughter conned a classmate into taking the last pair of the last batch of kittens as soon as they were weaned the little girl picked them up my wife and i sent her oft with cookies pats on the head and our blessing as soon as she was out the door we did a triumphant fandango in the kitchen and opened a bottle of bubbly twenty minutes lates the kid was back you guessed it with the kittens it seems she hadnt cleared things with the authorities at home she did not set any cookies or pats on the head this trip she was lucky to get away without a punch in the nose my correspondent in bc reproved me for not having our cat neutered weve been into that thoroughly its a costly business for one thing these lady cats have to have a complete hysterectomy like all modern women after every batch of kittens we discuss it plan to have it done get involved with getting rid of the kittens and before we get around to putting piper into hospital that feline numpho- maniac is in trouble again however the kittens are gone i probably wont get to heaven but i swore to two different people that the kitten they took was a male nobody seems to know the difference we called piper him until he got slightly pregnant for the first of many times next we had trouble with the dog playboy hes a back ward spaniel and no animal can be more retarded hes comparatively friendly that is hes friendly all he time more friendly when hes hungry and most friendly when hes soak ing wet you see we had planted grass seed in a large bare patch in the backyard gently and with infinite care we had turned the soil weeded it seeded it scratched it massaged it patted it and enriched it with chicken manure acquired by somewhat dubious means it looked like a pie ready for the oven our dog is not only too stupid to get out of the rain he is too dumb to bury a bone because he knows perfectly well hed forget where he put it so i had no fear of him disturbing the masterpiece but he does like to chase things next morning my wife looked out at her newlyseeded lawn she screamed i ran to the window the pie looked as though a troop of cavalry had bivouacked there for hie night holding the old girl up by the armpits i watched with horror in a minute two ruddy robins drifted in and started gobbling grass seed out of nowhere hurtled playboy making dirt and robins fly joyfully he stood in the middle of the graveyard of our hopes pawing the dirt like a bull and bellow ing his triumph then the black squirrels and the starlings got in a donny- hrook over who was going to have the attic for the summer the starlings had it last summer and the day they left for the south the squirrels moved in the other day a couple of starlings tanned and arrogant lust like all those southern tourists sailed insolently through the eaves into their pent house talk about bats in the belfry there was hell to pay we all stood about in the bedrooms looking at the ceiling mouths open i was cheering for both sides i think the squirrels won because one meaniooking starling limped out cursing over his shoulder hell be back with relatives then came the hardest blow of all opening day of trout season loomed my wife teaches piano to a little guy from the country hes about six he confided to her that he and his brother had been fishing speckled trout before the season they saw lots of big ones next day i drove past his farm sure enough there was a stream iikelylooking last week i was on hand with a chocolate bar a half dollar and my kindliest expression when danny arrived for his music lesson he ate the bar slipped he half in his pocket and agreed to show me the spot where the big ones arc all week i chortled and rubbed my hands when nobody was looking opening day i picked danny up early told his mother id look after him and off we went he told mt excitedly that the big ones were just below the dam in a deep hole i did a few little dance steps as we swished through the wet grass with the utmost hilarity i envisioned my friends fishing those wornout holes with hundreds of others there it is shrilled danny thats where the big ones are and they were all 728 suckers of them post office error ruled victims loss any loss incurred by a post office error in delivery of a notice of reassessment has been done let me quote you the headlines of this mornings globe and mail atom arms action set we have just elected a gov ernment that has promised that it will place canada our coun try in the nuclear arms race that is setting an example to the rest of the world of a coun try that instead of promoting peace has decided to succumb to that great monster war that will make our country not fit to live in for our children in the years to come that is willing to say that many people must suffer and die as they are still suffering and dying in hiro shima for the sake of revenge and that will not stop and think of the future twenty or a hun dred years from now over the future two or three years from now not to think rationally rather than emotionally is the greatest sin that man has ever commit ted the liberal government and those who voted liberal have decided in the midst of disarm ament discussions and program mes to accept nuclear arms so hat it and they may have a feeling and of us who are parents of teenagers and probably as with all the dozens of articles on the subject which are printed in magazines and newspapers everywhere we read we worried and we do nothing let me quote from the editorial parents with few exceptions are only too well aware of the dangers of steady dating which seems to have become an accepted teenage way of social life they dont approve of it but there are certain limits it appears as to how far parental authority can be stretched nowadays they can very well anti cipate ihe painful consequences but they just dont dare to intervene the teenagers of course act in good faith until it is sometimes too late need direction what a sad reflection on our qualifications as responsible parents that we condone or to our shame do nothing about an ever accelerating situation which we know is detrimental to the welfare the development and the future happiness of our children we tend to close our eyes hoping that if we dont look the problem will go away not too long ago i received a letter from a 15 year old girl which proves that the young people themselves are subcon sciously aware that the vogue of going steady is question able whether they admit it or realize it themselves children and this includes teenagers want parental direction they need rules to go by they need refusals to some of their re quests or demands they need parents joeys a dream here is the letter 1 was referring to and my reply what do you think about going steady my parents object to me going steady with this nice boy joe i think hes dreamy so you think joe is dream3 that makes two of you wake up my young friend and think of all the fun you might be missing by not getting to know other boys because if you go steady he is the only one youll get to know youll know one anothers minds and opinions as well as you know the lyrics of your favorite hit tune youll be confined to participat ing in those activities your own two limited imaginations can dream up of course youll always have a date but wouldnt it be more fun to have different dates and find out how exciting the life of a popular leenager really is going steady is such a comfortable arrangement you never have to make any effort to learn how to adjust to a new situation or adapt to different personalities or find out how the rest of the world lives you can jusl dawdle along in your own familiar rut how middleaged ran a 15 yearold be live it up ftirl turn on the old charm and make new friends and start really enjoying life time enough to be a steady when youre married you dont have any choice then will show off while were on the subject of the young people i have a couple beefs to direct lo parents no nows the time to air them i criticize the parents who allow a is or 16 yearold boy the use of the family car to wheel around in on his own no matter how reliable a driver he may be on his own hes bound to show oft and the young people who pile into the car with him make an appreciative audience challenging him to show his superior skills around town and out on the highways free to wander the newly organized teen town provide a much needed and greatly appreciated meeting ground for the young people parents of younger teenagers have a sense of security knowing the dances are properly chaperoned but i was disturbed to learn the young people are free to wander outside during the dances would it not be advisable if they ate determined to leave the haii for those in charge to refuse them reentry to the dance without payment of another admission charg this would discourage indiscriminate ducking out well with lhat load off my mind i must acknowledge my wholehearted admiration and respect for our teenagers in spite of all ive said i love you dearly kids but i think sometimes you suffer from an acute deficiency of intellectual discernment which can only be cured by the advent of maturity if only one could have two lives the first in which to make ones mistakes which teem as if they have to be made and the sconrf in which to profit by them lieves it would appear from what i hear that the general population is tired of war and yet in the same breath almost they say hat they want to fight we are discarding with the mentioned axiom years of wea- r discussions for peace why canada by accepting nuclear arms now is saying to the world and the hint will be ta ken you can be assured of that that it is quite ali right to accept nuclear power the bomarc which is a ground-to- air missile can be modified for groundtoground attack with a missile such as this arabia say could aim death at jerusal em and bargain quite success fully with israel she might or might not do this but we ar saying that it is quite all right for them to have the weapon i say again they may or may not use it but we are saying that it is fine for them to havt it will this world be fit to liv in with many countries all over the face of the earth having nu clear arms its bad enough now but what will it be likt twenty years from now when our children have to contend with it the amount of world tension varies directly with the number of bombs with more countries in the nuclear club it seems reasonable that the ten sion will be much greater when note not if will it snap why do we want nuclear wea pons for defense we say if we think this then we are ig noring the fact that the united states can will and must defend us for her own sake for pride then this is the only reason left and it is a foolish one the decision a few weeks ago was not to have bomarcs it was to have icbms bomarcs even as defensive missiles are rela- ively ineffective to quote the united states secretary of de fense and are only a stepping stone to the greater more des tructive intercontinental bal listic missiles these missiles will kill many harmless and in nocent people if used i say a- gain why citizens of this democrat ic and free country we ar to put it quite bluntly fools to accept nuclear arms now for our own peace and security when in the same move we ar exchanging the peace and se curity of our children for war tim wees april 25th 1963 dear sir our great
