consin and illinois it was good to sec- all the well bred cattle but i was interested too in the general farm setup of the country the areas we saw were quite similar to our own they have large cities close by and dairy farming predominates they have their problems too and with lower fluid milk prices the squeeze is a little tighter i was impressed by some things they are doing to keep incomes up driving along in the bus and looking over the countryside silos really attract your attention each set of buil dings has at least one and more often two silos that reach up about twice as high as the barn a corn crib beside the buildings was also standard equipment with large fields of corn stub ble and very few fences it looked like cash crop rather than americas dairyland but the dairy industry is there and to survive dairymen are going all out for cheap feed with corn the corn is also used as a cash crop as a secondary enterprise i think this move to corn is really just starting in york county and that in ten years silos and corn cribs will givo our dairy farms a little different appearannce too another point i noticed was the effort being made to mako cows produce the breeders we visited seemed to be going for all the milk they could get thev like good type too but if a cow is milking well they dont loso much sleep over type defects we saw many cows with re cords well over 20000 lbs the owners goal on one farm was to average 50 lbs of milk a day weve added another model to our low price spray kits now seven 9 models to choose from build your own sprayer at a new low cost high and low pressure kits for spraying weeds orchards rowcrops barns and livestock new catalogues free write now john pugh stouffville ph 8865644 tkmbahd yof may be called yr the breadwinner v- the whole year takes some doing heavy grain feeding is one of the production tools they use some herds get almost as much grain as they will eat and corn again often makes up to half the ration i think this trend to heavy grain is evident on our farms too those that follow it have to be prepared to cull ruth lessly to get rid of the cows that do not respond to large quanti ties of grain visits in wisconsin were to pabst farms bristol farms and gray views farms and our group also went to elmwood farms in illinois bethesda mr and mrs charles lee and baby son scott mr and mrs bud lee and baby
