over for its mangnificent wheat fields and years of drought to the present was william george howard who was born here october 6 1880 and died this month in a hospital in calgary most of his early life was spent in markham township at german mills in 1901 he felt the urge to go west so with s10 in his pocket set out on the har vesters excursion at tne close of the harvest season he travel led 10 st louis for an eight month course in carpentry and building the following year he staked a claim on 160 acres and started a homesteading near harris saskachewan he lived in a sod shack and broke the prairie sod using a single furrow plow and oxen through a system of preemp tion in a few years he purcha sed another 160 acres one year from may 14 to july 26 he broke 234 acres of prairie sod with a single fur row plow drawn by six oxen in 1910 he returned to ontar io to purchase what was called a south african script from george little in scarboro a vet eran of the south african war for which he could gain title to another 320 acres he now was the proud owner of a section of land 610 acres in 1912 he built a frame house and a large barn to hold 36 work horses and about this time he married a western girl margaret may four children blessed this home one girl and three boys mr howard was a great be liever in scientific farming and was convinced that every good larm must have livestock he finally went to south carolina to get purebred dark red polled herefords as the family grew up he and two of his sons farm ed over seven sections of land as any farmer can report they took in their stride good years and bad years when the drought struck the west in 1931 their choice herd of 50 head faced starvation mr howard and his son tried to sell them to a drover the price was so low they refused to deal with him riding two horses and with the help of a dog they drove the herd seventy miles to the saskatoon stock yards here they discovered the drover had put one over them by phoning ahead and ordering the buyers not to go above the price he had offered nothing daunted they drove the catle back to the farm and kept them alive on molas ses and russian thistles cleared from the fence rows and put through the hammer mill as progress indicated he dis carded the horses and tractois look over he was the first to introduce combining into the area he and his sons were al ways alert to new developments in farming suggested by the ag ricultural college the town of harris owed much to the interest of the ho ward family in church school and all municipal offices i the field of sports the men were all curling enthusiasts and when william howard was 70 years old he and his boys competed in saskatoons bonspiel his wife predeceased him in 1961 he is survived by a daugh
