stouffville 1m perial bank of commerce ard quick action by officers of the stouffville police department saved an elderly main street resident s2100 last week the nearvictim of a suggested con fidence racket the incident occurred on wednesday afternoon when a lady known to the bank staff requested a withdrawl of s2100 the matter was handled by mr r c tuck an accountant and the customer was immediately referred to the manager mr walton todd he was told that the wouldbe recipient of the cash was awaiting her return the money was for some minor repairs that had been complet ed on her home and for work that was still to be done mr todd suggested that the party should come to the bank and accept the casli in person when the customer left he summoned the police constables dennis davies and harry heatherington picked up a welldressed smoothtalking individual and took him to the police office for questioning they were joined within min utes by deputychief harvey cox of markham twp accom panied by sgt donald dukes and officers dan denby and evan kelley a police check re vealed that the man had a lengthy criminal record follow ing a check with the crown attorney the suspect a stran ge was ordered to leave town prior to his release he threaten ed to charge the police with walton todd false arrest about eight years ago markham twp police in vestigated a similar incident no arrests were made but the offense was never repealed bank manager todd told the tribune that he has a policy whereby excessive cash with- drawls must be referred to his office you hear about such and to re spectfully ask him to return to the office of policeman under better conditions the petition read mr wees noted that one- quarter of the young people who hail signed the petition had been either charged or repri manded by mr heatherington during his term of office in the town this goes to show the respect our teenagers hold for this man he said he is worthy ol the respect of every indivi dual in stouffville we believe that mr heatherington was forced to resign not by council bin because of bad working con ditions within the police force itself done good work as citizens we appreciate your interest in this matter said reeve win timbers he said he hoped mr heathering ton would continue to promote the operation of the air cadet squadron and even assist with the public school safety pro gram we are not unmindful of the work he has done he said hes not unhappy about anything continued the reeve he just decided to quit poilce work mr heatherington has made up his own mind con cluded reeve timbers we dont want to keep a man if he doesnt want to stay mr heatheringtons written resignation was read to the meeting by the clerk mr heatherington has help ed us a lot said fully approve of the young peoples petition he felt that the council might have given the delegation a fair hearing before finalizing their decision they shot the kids down before they got off the
