ended when a 1961 cadillac convertible was over turned near ballantrae but was resumed with the theft of a 1962 comet in stoutrville came to a conclusion on tuesday when the second vehicle was re covered four juveniles two of them escapees from st johns train ing school uxbridge have been charged with car theft one lad has also admitted stealing s30 from the orchard park public school in stouffville in a break- in two weeks ago the cadillac was owned by eastern scale works ltd tor onto it went out of control while travelling at a high rate of speed on no 18 hwy in whitchurch twp on thursday afternoon before flipping over on its top the costly auto pro ceeded an estimated 23 feet in midair it skidded on its roof more than 200 feet by some miracle the boys escaped in jury they on yonge street and fled into a nearby field the lady driver agreed to give the man a ride after he lagged her down and told her that her headlights were out when he assaulted her she swerved the car into a roadside snowbank pc al hudson of markham twp was in the area and ar rested the accused when he re turned on foot to no 11 hwy pc bob iladden and sgt wm shearn assisted in the case magistrate hollinrake with held sentence pending a back ground report united church offerings total 18500 for 1962 new car belonging to mr charl es atkinson obrien ave this car was recovered in scarboro this week the driver was asleep behind the wheel mr atkinsons carpenter toolbox was still intact in the auto the vehicle driven less than 800 miles suffered no noticeable damage altogether four police de partments were involved in the trackdown of the juveniles and the subsequent arrests includ ing the o p p at vandorf stouffville markham twp and metro the congregation of stouff ville united church heard re ports from the various organi zations and departments of the church at the annual meeting on wednesday and a treas urers report which revealed that givings for the year had totalled approximately 18500 ol this amount about 3900 was for the missionary and mainte nance fund of the church the church has been without a minister now for some time rev gordon cruikshank hav ing been given indefinite leave of absence due to ill health this years annual meeting was conducted by rev geo pick of newmarket representing york presbytery and was preceded by a congregational supper mr stewart stouffer secreta ry of the official board reported that during the year 23 mem bers had been added to the church roll twenty funerals were conducted and there were thirty baptisms and seven wed dings first year for ucw the year 1962 was the inaug ural year of the united church womens organization an amal gamation of the former wom ans association and the wom ens missionary society the new organization had been di vided into seven units and 154 women had participated dur ing the initial year the women had supported the needy with goods valued at 900 they had made 376 visits to shutins and sick and sent out 167 cards and christmas baskets total re ceipts of the organization for the year were 360800 christian education committee the report of the christian education committee as pre pared by secretary stanley schmidt was highly commend ed by chairman rev geo pick he said that this was a new committee in the united church and the report of its initial ac tivities was most encouraging among other matters dealt with the report pointed out as one of its greatest achieve ments the establishment of a church library which had been started with an initial gift of 200 from the official board the report also laid out in con cise fashion some of the prob lems to be faced by the com mittee in the new year suggest properly expansion during the meeting a strong plea was made for added sun day school accomodation as well as renovation of the pres ent school rooms a suggestion was also made that steps be taken towards the acquiring of additional church property this latter suggestion is to be considered at an early date by the church board new officers members of the board of ses sion for the current year will ba a h williams albert king fred campbell harold spot- ford and mrs ken campbell contentious buchanan dump area is sold whitchurch township coun cil was advised on monday night by mr dick buchanan that he has sold 80 acres of the 100 acres he owns to the york sanitation co ltd mr bucha nan has operated a large gar bage dump on the 2nd conces sion of the township for some time and the condition of the property has been a matter of unfavorable comment from time to time the new owners are messrs mccaffrey and sackhouse who were both present at the meet ing to file an application for a permit to operate the dump mr buchanan had already tak en out his permit for 1963 but it is not transferable the new owners indicated they would continue to collect garbage in richmond hill and aurora questioned regarding the dumping of the coiiis leather co industrial waste the own ers said this would contlnus but that much of the leather co waste was presently going on private farms the company representative asked an early decision as they intended to margin of five the actual figures were 63 births and 58 deaths markham tp refuses share of cost of 9 th con warning lights markham township council has refused to pay any share of the railway warning lights suggested for the railway cross ing at box grove on the 9th concession a communication from the board of transport commissioners calls for the lights to be installed at a cost ol 10300 for installation and 635 a year maintenance mark- hams share of the cost would be 12 ire of the installation and 50 of the maintenance this whole thing has been caused by the railways them selves commented reeve dean i dont think we should go for that this dangerous situa tion has been caused by the bypass railway said deputy- reeve hooper this should really have been an overpass we only agreed to the lights as a compromise mr hooper continued clerk harry crisp reminded council that they had been ad vised previously that unless the council agreed to pay no lights would be installed council members were all strong in their determination to resist the transport boards decision and a resolution pass ed unanimously that they would approve of the installation of he lights only if the railways would pay the entire cost i markham p s trustees continue to press for portion of twp lot fees the annual meeting of mark ham township public school trustees brought forth further statements of determination to seek a portion of the subdivi sion lot fees being collected in ihc township it was stated that markham had collected 211000 in lot fees a great deal of which had been used to finance sewers and a water tower mr don mclennan associa tion secretary said he had re quested directions from the provincial government on the spending of lot fee money he gave notice that the association would be pressing council again in 1963 although they had been refused in 1902 nineteen trustees attended the annual meeting held at the unionville school presided over by president s r patterson mr patterson reviewed the history of the association since 1922 he said that after a start the organization had been dor mant for a number of years out had been revived in 1901 and 62
