system put into practice on the farm of mr gordon cox cone 9 markham even the subzero temperatures of the past week had no adverse effect on the hardy holstcins that continue to produce a half can of milk per cow per day mr cox embarked on the major changeover after a dis astrous fire levelled his historic round barn on may 9 1959 he visited many farm premises before finalizing his decision to adopt the present plan now in use i was a little sceptical at first admitted the owner but if i had to do it over again i would do the same thing he pointed out that the expense involved in tearing down an old barn moving it to the desired site lebuilding it on a new founda tion and installing the necessa ry services would have cost may thousands of dollars at milking time the cows line up like so many soldiers and walk into four separate stalls where they are milked fed and then released through runway exit it takes about lib hours to milk the cox herd no sick cows veterinary calls have been reduced to almost nil on the cox farm udder accidents that plague many farmers who keep their cattle in permanent enclosures have also been cut we hardly ever have a sick cow anymore said mr cox he noted that before exposures to drafts in the warm stable had stricken several of the stock witli pneumonia he noted too that siice the changeover he had only one cow with hardware in its stomach such operations had been quite common before he said that since he had adopted the loaf ing barn system many new im provements had been perfected in laboursaving devices he ad vised that anyone contemplate ing such a move would be better to do a complete job one should go all the way for better results he said the milk is picked up by taylor bros transport at markham and shipped to markham dairy room for 60 cows the buildings are so con structed on the cox farm that the cattle are provided with an adequate windbreak at night there is room for 60 cows to take cover in a wellst rawed
