pse 8 the stouffville tribune twxhy hntury 17 1963 put artificial ice arena to vote urges pickering deputy- reeve pickering twp deputyreeve mrs jean mepherson his sug gested that no action should be tken on the erection of a multi- nousand dollar artificial ice rena in the municipality with out first putting the proposal before a vote of the people r mepherson made her thoughts on the project known at a meeting of the township re- reation committee last week she agreed that there was a need for such an enterprise but felt the matter should be put in the form of a question on a plebiscite the meeting chairman mr donald hopkins opened the dis cussion with a suggestion that an outdoor artificial ice rink should be constructed at an estimated cost of s10000o he contended that this would amount to approximately one mill over a 5year period mr w j greening argued that if such a scheme was to be promoted it would be better f the rink was enclosed rather than open this plan was sup ported by mr donald beer with the suggestion that an artificial ice plant could be added at a later time oiicuvwd before mrs mepherson noted that the arena proposal was not en tirely new since it had been dis cussed on some previous occa sions she said she understood the project would be delved in- o more thoroughly at a special meeting at some future date the children are not develop ing in the township as well as they should said mr hopkins because there is not opportuni ty for them all mr kalman vizely charged that priority was given to hockev and softball while othei recreational activities such as track and field swimming handicrafts etc were neglected he also blamed parents for their lack of interest in their childrens activities he con tended that canadian children should be able to compete on i par with athletes in other countries i think the number of kids playing hockey in canada out matches any said mr hop kins they can play up sweden and russia but they cannot match the training the children are getting around there mr vizely continued his ar gument that other recreational channels should be promoted other than hockey and ball our committee is new in terrupted donald beer you have to creep before you can walk we have been creeping too long concluded mr vizely council to make study of urban rural limits in pickering township where docs urban develop ment end and rural growth be gin in the twp of pickering the council will attempt to locate this line of demarcation in a private study without the use of highpriced professional experts if and when this boundary line is established the study will be expanded in an effort to learn the benefits if any of splitting the munici pality the motion to acquire this basic information was ap proved at a regular meeting on monday night although some members put forth strong ob jections to a divided township councillor w 1 greening contended that the municipality was in the midst of a period of growth and the time was not right to delve into the subject of township division there has been no clamour from the ratepayers he said the mon ey would not he well spent he suggested that such a study might possibly be more appro priate when the development of the township had reached a more settled state ive heard more discussion en splitting the township from the council than from the rate payers themselves said dep utyreeve mrs jean mepherson she suggested that the final decision on a division of the municipality should come from the people in a vote after all the facts had been put before the electorate facts and figures councillor ross deakin argtt- rd that the people could not advance much intelligent think ing on the subject until they were provided with the facts rnd figures that could be gain ed only through a thorough study surely the council does not have to wait for a clamour irom the ratepayers before they take some action he said councillor harvey spang pointed out that the splitting of the township had been the subject of much discussion in the north for many years i dont believe thai a town ship split is the answer but i dont know how to arrive at a basis for fart without a study stated councillor hubert wank if we cant afford a study now we wont be in any better posi tion to do it in two years time councillor milton mowbray suggested that the issue was of considerable importance and vhould be investigated first the council must establish some approximate line of division lie suggested that this could 1 done without the aid of ex perts i think that there are quite a number of wellinformed peo ple who feel that the town ship should be divided said reeve sherman scott council curfew rejected a motion to establish a 1130 pm curfew on all monday night meetings of pickering twp council failed to find ap proval with the majority of members this week councillor ross deakin charged that it was unfair to both the mem bers and the taxpayers to make decisions of importance after the midnight hour after twelve oclock a person isnt thinking clearly he said coun cillor w j greening agreed councillor deakin recalled that one particular council session lasted until nearly 2 am councillor hubert wank sug gested that if a time limit was established the earlier hours might be put to better advan tage deputyreeve mrs lean me pherson argued that each member was paid on a per meeting basis and as much work as possible should be com pleted regardless of the hour she said that a curfew could possibly add up to more meet ings and more expense i dont think that its neces sary to have an automatic ad journment concurred council lor milton mowbray i always aim for even oclock but i never seem to make it noted reeve sherman scott he pointed out however that improper decisions by a tired council could cost the tax payers more money than would be involved in an extra meeting the motion was defeated suggests picnic for township employees a municipal picnic for pick ering twp employees and their families the first of its kind has been proposed by deputyreeve mrs jean mc- therson she introduced the plan at the conclusion of a council meeting on monday night the date although not fina lized will likely he on a satur day afternoon in late june the site of the gathering to number in the hundreds will likely be in one of the town ships conservation parks mrs mepherson contended that it would afford the em ployees their families and the council members an op portunity to meet in an in formal and friendly getto gether i think its an excellent idea said reeve sherman scott hospital supt annie forgie recalls 191819 flu hie world has been at the crossroads so long that its time to modernize the place by constructing a
