experience and ability for good goernmcnt chas hooper buttonyille happenings mimuinmummming john broun paes last week buttonville resi dents mourned the passing of a highly respected citizen john edward brown of browne comers whose family pioneer ed in the area and were found ers of brown corners church mr brown suffered a heart seizure last april and spent several weeks in hospital but recently he had enjoyed better health and his udden death came as a shock to his many friends in the community mr brown served as secretary of browns corners united church and was for many years a member of the board of mana gement and also a member of the building committee he was a past president of the unionville curling club surv iving are his wife the former mildred mason a son harvey of guelph nancy mrs james wolfe unionville and gordon at home also surviving are brothers and sisters alex gertrude mrs d hood jean mrs r thomson margueiite mrs j ash laura mrs nor man reld delia mrs l dim- ma dorothy mis j ruther ford and newton from the pipher funeral home richmond hill the serv ice was held friday afternoon nov 30 at browns corners united church with rev dr a f binnington officiating interment was at the adjoining cemeteiy honorary pall bear ers were j w russell claik youg howard stiver w craig george lake and henry cole man pallbearers were college classmates and friends of har vey biown tsa no 3 sees busy year the newly formed tsa no 3 in the north section of markham township is near- ing the end of its first year board chairman arnold mort- son and members m wcllman s r patterson s riehaidson and w hibbard have done a fine job welding the five school sec tions nos 345 6 and 7 into one co operating unit is a task which has required much patience and effort during the year several measures have been adopted 1 an opportunity class has been instituted at no 4 school and arrangements have been made to allow the teacher mrs helfenstein to make aptitude tests throughout all the aiea schools 2 a new room has been ad ded at no 4 school and with pooled funds and the govern ment grant the cost has been minimal 3 a bus service has been ar ranged this not only provides safe travel for children it also allows control of grades so that no teacher has more than 4 classes 4 a travelling library music instruction film strips are oth er benefits 5 a salary schedule compar able to the best adoption of an accumulative sick leave policy for teachers and psi bene fits for fulltime teaching and maintenance staff assure good relations in this regard 6 fimergency features have been adopted in case of an inter national situation and a first aid course has been made avail able to pupils and teachers transistor radios flashlights and food packages are pait ot the equipment in each school as the board faces 1963 new problems confront them in a recent letter inspector maynard hallman warned that a new population influx is fore cast for the near future and stated that plans for new school accomodation must be made consideration has already been given to establishment of a senior public school and pur chase of a new school site is a possibility at a meeting held in button ville school saturday evening the board rcveiwed the inspec tors reports for s s nos 6 and 7 and were pleased that at no 6 mrs barbara tindnlls teach ing was judged much supeiior to that ordinarily found in a rural school the educational program was maikcd excellent interesting stimulating there are 23 children in grades 2 3 4 and 5 at no 7 school considerable time was lost in early autumn due to change of stalt but i lie inspector i ports good progress there arc 48 pupils in two rooms four grades to a room anl according to mr hallman the board should study the pos sibility of transfei ring grades 7 and 8 to another school in september 63 the teachers at no 7 exchange some classes to good effect the inspector re ports physical aspects of the schools were rated from 1 to 5 and while water supply chalk boards and pupils desks were given first quality rating such items as ventilation play ground and physical education equipment need to be upgraded as do some areas of lighting toward the conclusion of last saturdays meeting secretary harold hill distributed 6000 cheques to the board members for their years service this represents token payment for the cars meetings 29 in this first year ol organization most ly 4 hours duration plus all the hours of time and talent ex pended in netting the baby area on its way school board mem bers are a dedicated lot they have to be for the most part their only reward is the tax payers criticism the next time you meet your school board members shake them by the hand and let them know you appreciate teir work on behalf of the community last saturday dec 1 we put trees listened to the grey cup game fogbound and cut a few stray blades of grass all in sunny shirt sleeve weath er white gift service will be held at browns corners united church next sunday with sun day school and church covi- bined at 1130 am miss etta hart of the fred victor mis sion will be the speaker and the junior choir under the direc tion of mrs george hooper will sing the christmas concert will be held at the church on dec 19 wednesday on that same day the ucw will held their christmas meeting the cancer societv benefit will be held in buttonville w i hall on friday dec 14 and the sponsoring club are plan ning an interesting evening of bridge and euchre mrs gordon purvis is convening draw prizes and buttonville wi social and work committees are in charge of refreshments and arrange ments the children in the communi ty will be entertained by the lions club members at button ville wi hall this saturday dec 8 there will be films and fun mrs s j english has been on the sick list recently on sun day joy fuller who recently represented york presbytery ypu at a conference in hesp- eler played the organ at browns corners on monday of last week ar nold farms market was closed snd the community regrets this leverse for the arnold family mr george arnold has been in poor health for more than a year now gerald reesor who recently celebrated his first biithday by learning to walk had his first seiious fall last sunday morn ing he cut his nose and had to have stiches to repair the damage the patterson family visited at meaford last sunday mrs yvonne mathieu has re cently taken over as beauty counselor in the area a w 1 quilt was completed at the home of miss mary ro- dick last week mrs a w miuer entertained at tea for several neighbours recently among the guests were mrs ross mrs hampstead mrs k johnston mrs clayton jones mrs h r paterson and mrs fred leaf our hats are off to mrs char les hooper who was a sturdy supporter at every meeting dur ing her hubands campaign for municipal office the former nelson boyington home at the corner of no 7 and don mills road has a sold sign on it but we understand that the lohman family who now leside there do not have to move douglas denike whose par ents lecently moved fiom hughson drive to agincourt entertained several local friends last saturday paul and philip johnson and donald yeates buttonville has made quite a donation to the unionville atoms the buttonville line of aspiring hockey players at the crosby memorial rink lists among its members wayne and stephen bobbett paul and phi lip johnson roger warnock josh lehman and greg hood buttonville school giaduates 1962 will be entertained at dinner monday evening dec 10 at buttonville wi hall among the guests will be the graduating class their patents school board representative to tsa no 3 s r patterson and mis patteison inspector and mrs maynard hallman
