articles farm report in the last few tjweeks we have heard and read a great deal about the milk business very few of the views expres sed have come from dairy farm ers most of the talk has come from those on the other side including leaders of consumer groups and farm writers who have attempted to uncover the cause of the trouble in the dairy industry fluid milk producers have not fared very well in this publicity consumer groups have expressed horror at the very thought of producers sup porting a price increase sev eral articles have laid the sur plus problem on the doorstep of the fluid men the general thought is that fluid producers are morally obligated to cut back production and at the same time think of lower milk prices rather than making ef forts to get the price higher these points of view may sound reasonable and are fine for any one not making his living from milking cows but the people who are talking this way should experience their moment of truth if they were asked to ac cept a lower income in the interests of the national econo my the live and let live phi losophy always sounds good but somehow we all have a strange habit of thinking that it fits some other group better than ourselves a dairy farmer cutting production would be in the same position as a merchant in town closing his store for a few days each week to give his competitors a better chance i contend that the milk busi ness looks very differpnt to a dairy farmer than is does to those of us on the outside on his farm he is under constant pressure to provide a standard of living for his family some thing like that enjoyed by the rest of the country he is in business surrounded by those who hold free enterprise and the profit incentive sacred oth er business men who get ahead quickly are the most respected men in the community how do the problems of the cost of liv ing and surpluses look to a man who this year paid more for a new tractor paid higher taxes paid higher labour bills and paid more for his own fam ily living than ever before its a cold hard fact than since 1959 the canadian wholesale price index has risen 6 average weekly earnings have gone up 1214 while milk has remained the same those who criticise milk pro ducers for their efforts to maintain and improve their lot are free to take their stand but theymust in return be pre pared to plead guilty for an element of hypocrisy in their attitude this of course doesnt solve any of the surplus problems which are quite serious but ifi the solution is to come from dairy farmers themselves lets be realistic and not expect one group to step forward anxious to sacrifice advantages that may be the result of many years of hard work ikncjiy hatmt 8 1962 the stouffywjs tobuneptgtll atsssssxxsssssxssxxsssxxsss
