2 the stouffyttu tkjume tksvlty fewy 15 1962 editorial a ballot vote a council guide at the recent december elec tions in the township of pickering ratepayers cast a majority ballot in favour of sunday movies and sunday sports in spite of a negative return in the more rural areas of the muni cipality the question of its passing wasnt even close in spite of this landslide affirm ative opinion registered by the elec torate the deputyreeve mrs jean mcpherson elected to vote against the passing of both bylaws at a regular meeting of council last week she explained that her opinion on the issue was still unchanged and she could not condone any program of this type although we can readily appre ciate anyones personal feelings on such a debatable subject we feel that by placing such questions before a ballotvote of the people the council is obligated to be guided by its re sults we would suggest that on dec 9th the matter was automatically taken out of the councils hands this is only democracy in action if the members would overrule the de cision of the electors then the who idea behind such a plan is of no avail the council as servants of the people should serve the people we could not help but assume with some dis may what might have happened if three other councillors had adopted a similar attitude to the deputyreeves stand and both bylaws had been de feated wouldnt that have been x fine pot of potatoes we could just visualize the municipal chambers crammed with irate ratepayers that would have made the antiassessment gathering look like an afternoon sew ing circle the deputyreeve may have the courage of her convictions but in this particular issue the wishes of the electorate should come i first our library deserves support the annual report from the stouffville library board indicates that the growth in hunger for books is continuing a trend that despite tv and other interests has been con tinuing for some years the report indicates too that greater changes will have to be made in the financing of these facilities in the future if we are to keep pace with this growing demand for the printed word like school facilities the need for good facilities in the field of read ing are something that cannot be ignored most important is the need to provide the availability of good reading for our young people what provisions there are in the way of grants from government sources for capital expansion of libraries we do not know but this avenue should cer tainly be explored as was pointed out in the recent inaugural meeting of the library board the present building was erected through the carnegie foundation twenty five years ago and since then the popu lation has trebled this fact alone should be enough to cause town au thorities to take a close look at lib rary needs present facilities are severely cramped and there is little land in the present site on which to build if the present site is to be maintained it would appear that an other storey on the building might be the only answer if this is feasible on the present structure while increased population forms a factual reason for needing enlarged facilities there is also the impact of the vast advancement from the tech nological development of the last decade there is serious need for in formative reading material that would permit individuals to brush up on their knowledge so that they can intelligently assess the world of today we live in an age overloaded with conflicts which bring an in- creased tendency to seek guidance from good books library grants have been in creased in recent years but they still fall short and cannot provide foe the natural growth and better facil ities we are entitled to expect from our library operations the time has come when v must be prepared to award this in- stitution the place it deserves so that it can fulfill the duties the public is demanding of it the finer things of life the ofttimes callous and selfish interests that surround this work-a- day world was hit a solid jolt on the jaw right here in our own commun ity last week when it was learned that a young uxbridge man present ly employed in stouffville had will ingly offered one of his kidneys in an effort to save the life of an older brother for 22 year old gene more it was not any heroic gesture on his part rather than except any verbal compliments for his act he appeared more inclined to pass it off as an occurrence that should be expected of one brother for another for this writer there is much more to it than that the decision sets an example in life that many of us would do well to emulate even on a much smaller scale the actual operation or the period of convales cence to follow is not the important factor in this story its the unselfish willingness to give of ones own in order that another might live that sets such an admirable example in this case this act is something that we could well expect from this 22 year old young man for those who have come to know him here in stouffville he is just that kind of person the bestwishes of the community is ex tended to this family in their time of deep concern one may be sure that with family ties welded so close ly together the success or failure of this venture can leave no room for regret putting the best to the test on friday night of this week the uxbridge black hawks will come to town for an exhibition bene fit game with an aggregation of all- star hockey talent from the stouff ville community league the uxbridge club last years provincial intermediate c champ ions have organized another fine team again this season and their hometown supporters are justly proud of their entry attendances of close to 1000 people have not been uncommon even during the regular schedule and the playoffs are yet to come in fridays game the spotlight of attention will be focussed on- two individual performers uxbridge has the top pointscorer in their lineup out of an entire 8team league in art kennick no- 4 the allstars in turn will dress their top marksman in matt kinnari no 9 many faithful followers of the community leagues weekly activ ities have suggested any member of the allstar unit could hold his own in oha company on friday two of the best in each class rennick and kinnari will be put to the test of course if rennick no 4 should fall below pregame expectations fans municipal winter works program at the end of ihe week and this meant that some 40000000 was available for the federal contribution to work undertaken by some 2200 municipalities across canada looking over the figures i note that some 180000 has been ex pended as the federal govern ment share for winter works in oshawa and district since the program stated in 1958 not a considerable sum per haps in comparison with the amounts provided through pub lic works for harbour improve ment and dredging but never theless significant in providing employment during wintertime for many of those who other wise might not have had work i might say that when this item was passed this week it also meant that some 100 muni cipalities whose accounts were already in for this winter could now get their money and be in a position to pay their bills on monday my colleague the honourable minister of nation al health and welfare intro duced a resolution raising the old age pension by 1000 a month this is now being debated in the house and will then be pass ed as a bill and is expected to become law within the next two weeks this is a matter of consider able interest to more than a mil lion old age pensioners across jieople would have to do without their beer when the baby bonus cheques failed to appear this however could be solved by hav ing the new governments dis tribute free beer once a month m but the real beauty of ihe scheme is this do you realize that instead of being a big fat nrospeious peaceful country we could suddenly become a whole mess of small poor stru ggling aggressive countries all wed have to do is abolish the income tax then sit baok md scream for help and the yanks wouia rush in enough foreign aid to keep us in luxury canada and it is noteworthy that among the audience in the house of commons galleries this week have been a number of elderly persons in the over70 class when the bill goes through it will mean that pensioneis will have benefitted by total inc reases of 19 monthly since the present government first as sumed office at the same time veterans pensions were raised last session by 20 percent as pari o the overall social justice program speaking in the house on thursday i pointed out that unemployment was lower by 115000 than at this time last year and as a percentage of the labour force was the lowest it had been in december for five years at the same time some 18000 more canadians weie at work i also stressed the fact that hie government would contin ue to implement measures to stimulate the economy and to provide jobs until such time as every canadian who wanted to work was able to work perhaps the most significant factor in assisting the export drive has been the devaluation of the dollar and this has meant a vast increase in the sale of canadian products overseas and this in turn has been reflected in increased industrial activity and more jobs for canadians one of the encouraging de velopments in recent months has been a marked increase in automobile production accom panied by higher employment in the industry production was tip 2 percent in the automobile industry and employment rose by 6 percent this does not mean that we are out of the woods by any means however a continuation of pres ent trends along with a degree ol stability in labourmanage ment relations such as the agreements recently concluded in ihe automobile industry will be reflected by a high level of employment and continuing security over the next few years both management and labour can take credit for some of those developments because in
