developed a new and improved process for the direct reduction of iron oie into us able form of metallic iron this work has been carried out in conjunction with the lurgi- chcmie company of frankfurt germany in revealing that the com pany had heen carrying out ex periments in a large pilot plant at hamilton woiks for nearly a year ii m griffith stelcos vieepiesident of operations said the new process should prove particularly significant in the production of high grade steels and iron in the production of high vcr mr and mrs bill maguire mr arnold morton miss ethel coulson mr and mrs brumwell other guests attend ed from charbot lake trenton port credit sarnia and tor onto quality iron and steel scrap low in sulphur free of impuri ties and otherwise consistent in its hemlcal composition is a liighly desirable material mr griffith stated such material or scrap equivalent can be ob tained when iron ore is reduced directly to metallic iron a process that would produce mich a metallic iron has for a long time been a target of met allurgical research many pro cesses of this type are in exist ence but most of them aie either mrncult to implement or eco nomically impractical in the process developed at stelco the iron oie is reduced in horizontal rotaiy kiln by means of natural gas and coal the reduction occurs in the sol id state so that neither slag nor liquid metal is formed a very close temperature control in the kiln is one of the essential re quirements of the process such a temperature control is insured by judicious introduction of fuel along the whole length of the kiln and by very careful temperature measuiements tak en over the whole length of the furnace another essential le- ouirement of the process is a tioper particle size distribution in the charge the metallic iron as discharg ed by the kiln is porous and is frequently leferrcd to as sponge this sponge can be used as feed for mcclmaking furnaces such as electric furnaces or oxygen converters or for ironmaking furnaces such as cupolas the sponge may be used cither in its original form or compressed to briquettes so as to have a high density preferably only high grade ores or concentrates in the form of pellets should be used as raw material for pro duction of diiect leduced iron the degree of reduction of the sponge is controllable and can be within the range of 90- 96 depending upon the chem ical composition of the ore con centrate the iron content of the sponge may be within the range of 94987c preliminary results being oh- tainedin the pilot unit installed at hamilton works are very en couraging and trials with the sponge in electric furnaces oxy gen converters and cupolas will be carried out in the near future nothing makes the younger generation settle down faster than a
