assessment in the rural areas of the munici pality as unjust and unfair at il public meeting sponsored by the pickering twp federation cf agriculture in the brougham hall on thursday night the huge crowd of interested prop ertyowners that attended the gathering filled the seating ac commodation of the hall to cap acity in addition to the reeve mr sherman scott the county assessor mr gordon hepditch and the county warden mr earl dowsweu two members of parliament hon m b dymond and hon t d thomas were also present the guest speaker was mr donald middleton di rector of properties ontario federation of agriculture the president of the pickering fed eration mr norman lehman acted as chairman want act changed mr lehman informed the meeting that the current pro gram promoted by the pickering federation was not directed ag ainst any individual in the twp of pickering we are only try ing to get across to the provin cial government the need for a change in the assessment laws he said that is the ulti mate aim of the federation he continued mr lehman pointed nut that he himself had not been affected this does not mean that i am not interested in other peoples problems he said it looks to me as if the man is being assessed and not the land commented mr harold lapp a markham twp farmer mr lapp explained what action the farmers in scarboro had tak en through the courts when tempting to carry out his duties according to his interpretation of the assessment act he sug gested that perhaps the assess or should base his figures on ac tual values we damn the as sessor as the person responsible for high taxation but he is only providing the equity to pay for the cost of services that we de mand he said the county assessor mr hepditch described one section of the act as from the floor that the assessment commis sioner should be present at a council meeting on feb 5th when a farmer protest delega tion would attend the reeve said he would not permit any crossquestioning of the assess or by members of the deputa- tionyou may criticize the council but i will not permit any employee to be pulled apart he said no protection mr donald sanderson urged the federation to provide pro tection not only to the bonafide farmer but farm land dont forget to include us he said mr sanderson owns a farm east of claremont but also holds another position in toronto submitted by the firm of button and coon of stouffville in a letter dated jan 22nd the council was in formed that the stouffville firm had been retained by mr geo allison to draw up and renew options saturday morning two games were played when the monarchs took on whitevale and in the second encounter jhey played the brougham jets in the first game with martin ecklund in goal the monarchs held whitevale to a 2 to 0 score the goalgetters were paul dra per and jim cochrane in the second game the mon archs defeated the brougham county councillors have varied opinions on emo program the benefits of a county em crgency measures organization program was both praised and ridiculed by council members at a special meeting last week summoned by the warden earl dowswell the final decision on the matter was made necessary due to a january 30th deadline the county must give 60 days notice if they should decide to break off their joint agreement with the city of oshawa the agreement is dated as of march 31st a morning committee meet ing decided to cancel the cur rent arrangements but this de cision was reversed at the af ternoon session it may require a budget of close to 65000 to carry out the proposed program in 1962 county representatives ex pressed varied arguments both for and against the emo pro ject reeve pat sheehan of ajax contended that the emergency measures organization had not lrogressed further in the coun ty because the co ordinator could not cope with the work he said that the coordinator had asked for an assistant last year but his request had been
