monday evening feb 5th if rural farm residents affected by recent landassessment hikes turn out in force to reg ister personal protests the gathering if present will bring to a head a mounting tide of resentment over current land values as applied to many farm prem ises particularly in the northern areas of the muni cipality many have claimed that their appeals be fore the court of revision in november and decem ber were not afforded fair consideration since that time one ratepayer mr robt g roy has waged a continuous vvar of words with the assessment de partment and in particular the assessment com missioner mr dclbert goslin as his chief target as the champion of this antiasscssment program mr roy has spent hundreds of dollars to air his protests in print mr roy told the tribune that his campaign has received unbelievable support a paid advertisement in the tribune jan 25 has urged pickering residents who feel that they have been overassessed to rally to the support of a petition to be presented at a regular meeting of council on feb 5th federation support the ontario county federation of agriculture has gone to the support of the pickering farmers at a recent directors meeting of the federation it was agreed that a portion of the assessment act should be amended a public meeting has been organized for the township hall at brougham on thursday tonight feb 1st at 815 the principal speaker will be mr donald middleton his topic will be taxation and assessment an open invitation has been extended to farmers members of assessment departments and township feb 6 8 p m community hall everyone welcome mnmmmmmmmmmmmmr- five members of park board resigning five members of the clare mont park board plan to sub mit their resignations at the annual meeting to be held in the claremont community hall on tuesday feb 6th at 8 pm messrs kal vizely bob madill eddie ortiz al roszell and jack rennie plan to withdraw from the organization all have serv ed on the board for a number of years the meeting scheduled for tuesday night is important and village residents are urged to attend the financial statement annual report and election of officers for 1962 will be aired at that time motorist has sentence reduced in appeal court a 30day sentence levied against a pickering township motorist by magistrate robert dnieper was reduced to nine days by judge alex c hall in whitby county court last week martin kulach 50 of rr 3 pickering was sentenced to 30 days in jail for driving while intoxicated to avoid any com plications judge hall meted out a nine day term since the ac cused had already been in cus tody for that period of time c a hammond of toronto counsel for mr kulach said that his client was a superintendent in a plant that manufactured parts for government aircraft he pointed out that the accused was an electronics engineer and his firm was having trouble locating a man to fill the post crown attorney bruce aff leck agreed that the 30day sen tence was too long he explained that the presiding magistrate had handed down the sentence as a deterrent to others i see no reason in this case why the penalty should differ from what it has been for norman fretz flew to her home in nova scotia on sat urday evening to be with her an oshawa man was awarded more than 42000 last week in a civil action at the ontario supreme court a jury found in favor of gordon blight 285 mon- trave avenue oshawa who sued stanley jackson of uxbridge for damages suffered as the re sult of a twocar collision in february 1960 the jury award was the 7560 that the plaintiff had claimed in special damages and 52000 in general damages mr justice schatz decided that the plaintiffs claim of 35- 000 in general damages should stand and altered the jurys de cision accordingly defence counsel robert rutherford said that the jurys award was ex orbitant and perverse and said that the plaintiff should get what was asked on the state ment of claim counsel for the plaintiff malcolm robb qc said that the statement was made up before the plaintiff had undergone operations for in juries suffered the action arose out of an ac cident on highway 47 a mile east of goodwood on feb 14 i960 blight in evidence said that he was a passenger in a parked car which was run into by the defendants car mr blight said that as a result of back injuries he suffered he is now limited in his activities medical evidence was given to show that blight had undergone more than one operation in an effort to correct back injuries it was the medical opinion that the plaintiff would be perma nently physically impaired the defendant jackson said that his vision was obscured on the day of the accident and he did not see the other car until it was too late jackson said that poor studied in the project despite cold weather and icy roads there was a good turnout of parents and friends for the afternoon programme five ex cellent exhibits were presented by the following clubs al tona brougham mount zion quaker hill and scugog three interesting demonstrations were presented by the clubs from brooklin greenwood and prince albert five senior club members re ceived special county honours this was for the completion of six home making club units mrs brown also presented mrs ella shaw of brooklin with provincial honours on the com pletlon of twelve homemaking club units the spring 4h homemaking club unit for ontario county will begin shortly the project to be studied is being well dressed and well groomed two training schools will be held for the local leaders the
