59 congregations in york presbytery attended the inaug ural meeting of united church women at the trinity united church newmarket two pre existing organizations the wo mens auxiliary the wa and the womens missionary socie ty the wmsj were joined in to one group of united church women with the aim of uniting all women of the church for tne total mission of the church during the month of january this inaugural service has taken place in 2800 charges in over 100 presbyteries in canada in the morning session the ex ecutive was elected and the allo cation was set at 20700 for york presbytery rev two people were named as provincial nominees robert mc- vey of markham village and john harman of richmond hill mr mcvey won the vote and therefore will stand as provin cial candidate for the ndp from north york in the next provincial election he is a law yer in markham village and is the father of four children and brownies an organizational meeting of the local association for girl guides and brownies was held at the home of mrs a gresham saturday afternoon the guide and brownie movement is a worldwide and very worthwhile organization and the local as sociation is a committee estab lished to sponsor packs and companies and help and encour age guides mrs gresham presided at the meeting as the chairman and mrs m chappell as secretary mrs jean harrott was appoint ed badge secretary and mrs j waite as press secretary a telephone committee was also appointed mrs d lehman for the brownie first pack mrs a spence brownie 2nd pack and mrs ii baxter for the guides as a start in raising funds it was decided to circulate a basket among the mothers con taining a wrapped gift the person receiving this is to take the gift make a contribution then in turn wrap another gift and send it on to the next per son on the list the next meeting of this as sociation will be held on febru ary 21st at 830 pm at the home of mrs geo thompson 350 glad park avenue at which time fund raising stouffville christian mens fellowship on monday evening feb 5th in the stouffville baptist church walter pipher lucky winner a social evening was held on monday at the masonic hall bv the rebekahs and oddfellows lodge when mr bob timbers showed pictures taken on his trip to rome at the time of the world plowing match a high light of the evening was when mrs timbers drew the lucky ticket jfor the 100 bond this was held by mr walter pipher stouffville one of towns early hotels coming down the former queens hotel lo cated on main et east and known as queens court is be ing demolished the building was erected some seventyfive j ears ago by mr dick knill this was the second hotel to be operated on this site a hostelry being maintained there back in riel rebellion times and oper ated by a mr anderson mr john martin took charge of the queens in 1889 and com pletely rebuilt the front of the building when operated as a hotel the place was heated by two hot air furnaces and was one of the first public places in town to have electric lighting there were large sample rooms for the travelling salesmen of that day and the place could ac commodate 30 to 50 guests mr martin also operated an exten sive livery stable business along side the hotel other hotels operating in town at that time included the man sion house which is nearly one hundred years old and has been renovated and is now operated as a commercial establishment near the cnr the building opposite the queens where is lo cated the antique house was run as a hotel as well dickson hill mr and mrs hugh boyd of king city
