be held at the stouffville baptist church on sunday december 3 t st at 730 pm preacher rev j williams pastor we welcome youl cedar grove dec 21st it takes a little snow to put christmas in the air our vihj age looks very festive with lights and lighted trees visible j all through the night and if all goes well there should be musi 1 drilling up from the rink any day now the house lights all the way in to toronto begin ning in cedar grove are gay and imaginative and the busi ness sections arc really aglow it is worth driving down ave nue road to see the imperial oil buildings huge noel spelled out in lighted windows and fill ing the whole lace of the build ing a short trip to the outskirts of toronto is rewarding ratepayers meeting in midsummer markham tp council called a meeting of pub lic school trustees it was point ed out that council looked fav ourably on the formation of school areas and that this tow n- ship was the only one left in the metro perimeter which had not taken steps in this direction at that time the cedar grove trustees stated they would pre fer to discuss the subject of areas with their ratepayers at the annual meeting before com mitting the section to an area organization the subject of areas there fore will be under open discus sion at the december 27th meet ing and the ratepayers will be asked to express their feelings toward forming an area to in clude ss 20 if the les milroys house is a little weak at the seams it may be due to the fact that 11 of a possible 17 of margs relatives visited there over the weekend her mother sisters and their families came from st cathar ines for a prechristmas get- together that was fun from be ginning to end mothers club the following officers were elected at this weeks meeting of the mothers club to hold office present name in the church on wednesday eve ning with the president mrs g astley presiding the annual reports were given showing an active year in all departments the roll call was faith mrs fred puckrin led the worship service the three wise men assisted by the twelve ladies press reporter dinah davis who were present mrs g ast- prog convener evelyn whitta- more programme committee ruth mrs fred puckrin presented a paper on the christmas customs of other lands during the social hour two of the charter mem bers mrs frank puckrin and mrs w h guthrie cut the cake which was decorated for tlie occasion representing the wa from 19281961 during the meeting the 192s president of the ladies aid mrs frank puckrin read summary of the wa since its beginning the first ladies aid of audley methodist church was organized in september i90s by the rev 1 c bell this society of which mrs james fovvlie was- the first president had a membership fee of ten cents and a monthly fee of five cents it was disbanded in octo ber 1919 after a lapse of nine years the present organization was organized on january is 1928 by the rev a r sander son minister of audley united church mrs frank puckrin was the first president of this society of the eleven presidents since 192s all are living in aud ley and active in the wa ex cept mrs e pardon oshawa and mrs walter pratt gait four of the charter members mrs frank puckrin mrs w h guthrie mrs lome saunders and airs charlie clemence are still living in audley mrs w if guthrie who served as pres ident for eleven years has a life membership pin for her long years of service during the past 33 years the ladies have taken an active part in the church life of the com munity arranging social activ ities from sock socials and dra mas to family suppers pro grams and banquets they have supplied the church with such things as lamp glasses stove pipes matches kitchen sup plies chairs lawn mower cur tains pianos hymn books bi bles and dishes they have paid the pianotuners the caretak ers the hydro bills and the clockrepair bills the ladies con tributed nearly 600 worth of equipment for the new church which was built in 1936 the wa has sent many contribu tions of money quilts blankets bales of clothing food parcels bandages fruit flowers christ mas boxes cards etc methods used to raise funds have ranged from sunshine bags mite boxes magazines to the modern ba zaars and teas and now the present wa which became af filiated with the hms in 1911 will fade into the past on dec 31 to emerge as the united church women of the united church of canada in january mrs fred puckrin and mrs mac hedge leaders of the baby band held a party for the pre school children and their moth ers in the church on saturday afternoon the girlsof the cgit with their leader mrs bill guthrie presented a beautiful vesper service in the church on sun day evening they were assisted hy some of the younger girls and mrs arch bel supplied the organ music many gifts were received a the white gift service at sun day school on sunday after- victoria square news mrs w sandle the christmas meeting of the sr womens institute was held at the home of the president mrs earl empringham with mrs v weedon as convener roll call was answered by a gift for the childrens aid mrs jim barker led in the sing ing of christmas carols a christmas poem was given by mrs a frisby the guest speak er was mrs j wilkins of but- tonville who told a christmas story wms meeting the final wms meeting held at the manse was well attended the christmas worship period was taken by mrs wm orr mrs binnington assisting with mrs perkins at the piano for the carols the roll call was most interesting one woman be ing a member of the wms for 59 years another for 48 years and others for shorter periods several had been given a life membership by the late mrs wilmot brumwell mrs harvey collard gave a short summary of the work through the 61 years since be ing organized with 7 charter members there have been only six presidents there have been active younger groups and some members have served on the presbyterial mrs binnington was thanked for securing information from the archives and with mrs mc- cague will continue to prepare same for keeping in our church and in toronto would appre ciate any picture of former members etc mrs mccague was presented with the new testament new ptnglish bible in appreciation of 21 years as president w a the final wa meeting was held at the home of mrs john mccague mrs mccague took charge of the worship service assisted by mrs l mumberson mrs w brumwell and mrs g joyce mrs earl empringham gave a report of the wa an nual held at mount albert five hundred dollars was turn ed over to the board of stew ards mrs m jarvis took charge of the business mrs s defoe gave an excellent treasurers report mrs w madill thanked mrs m jarvis for being presi dent for the past two years euchre there were ten tables of euchre players at the party held in the victoria square com munity hall on friday evening prize winners were ladies mrs olive orr mrs patton mrs larkin gents fraser gee everett vanderkooy herman mortson freezeout bert nich ols and win sandle mrs agno- iitzzi and harry forster a luc ky draw for a hamper of grocer ies was won by bert nichols as this was the last game of the series the series winner was wm sandle another euchre party will be held in the new year notice will be given later girl guides the 1st gormlcy guide com pany joined with mrs j inglis guide company of richmond hill east for a christmas party brownies the 1st gormley brownie pack visited the rest home in gormley to sing carols each brownie made up a basket and presented them to the ladies along with a plant and a box of homemade rookies the brown ies wish to thank mrs s boyn- ton for her donation of cookies neighbourhood notes birthday greetings to mrs don matthews for december 22 to mrs norman tyndall for december 22 mrs harvey coll ard dec 25 laurie canning 3 years dec 25 and mr wm orr for dec 26 congratulations to mr and mrs charles stansbury phyl lis price who were married on friday in toronto miss margaret sandle under went a tonsillectomy at the york county hospital last week miss augusta fierheller of toronto mrs b moir bayview village and mrs h acreman of keswick came hack to the wms meeting on wednesday after noon noon mrs r cox read the story the missing buttons and eil een guthrie presided at the pi ano the gifts were placed ar ound the manger scene under the tree greenwood dec 21 the evening w a meeting for december was held at the home of mrs c mctaggart this was the final meeting of the evening wa before the new organization the united church women takes over the worship service was in charge of mrs h middleton and the president mrs d morden pre sided over the business it mark ed the climax to the years since the evening wa was formed in greenwood by mrs luffman the afternoon wa met at the home of mrs j brooks with ten members present group one had charge of the worship per iod with mrs wilson mrs pas- coe mrs clarke mrs brown and miss may brown taking part mrs wm brown presided over the business one hundred dollars was given to the new washrooms recently added to the church miss may brown thanked every one for taking part and helping in our wa in the years gone hy the after noon wa was started around 1898 at the beginning of 1962 we commence a new organiza tion called the united church women rev flcctham closed the meeting with prayer mrs brooks served refreshments miss perkins
