this issue hoover upsets watson in markham township hooper is returned there will be one new but not unfamiliar figure in mark- ham twp council in 1962 mr charles hoover a longtime clerk of the municipality and more recently the welfare ad- minlstrator in the township created the lone upset victory in the election on monday he de feated ward 3 councillor stan ley watson by a majority of 111 votes mr hoover polled 249 votes to 138 for mr watson in ward 2 councillor charles hooper bested his closest rival stewart rumble by a 158 vote majority wm clark a former reeve and county warden trail ed the field clean sweep for charles hoover his clean cut victory over incumbant member stanley watson was a startling upset he swept each of the six polls he tripled his opponents count at mongolia and doubled his rivals vote at cedar grove there was only a xmall turnout of the electorate for councillor hooper it was a similar result only in one of the seven polls did he trail his nearest rival mr rumble at his home poll in buttonville mr hooper amassed a large majority the two polls at vic toria square were split mr clark was supported quite well in the unionville area but these numbers fell far short of put ting him in the heat of conten tion mr hooper counted 403 votes mr rumble 215 and mr clark 178 due to the light vote the totals were tabulated quite early in the evening the ab sence of a contest for either the reeve or deputyreeves post has been attributed to a noticeable lack of interest five veteran trustee members were elected to a newlyestab lished public school area board no 3 they include mclvin wellman arnold mortson stan patterson wm hibbard and stan richardson h c betts was far behind in his bid for a scat john brignall forty years in claremont on monday dec 4th mr john e brignall a resident of claremont for a period of forty years passed away in the brier- bush hospital stouffville the funeral service will be conduct ed from the dixon chapel mar- kham on thursday afternoon today at 130 pm rev a a cresswell of claremont united church is in charge with inter ment in salem cemetery green wood mr brignall was an avid sportsman in past years when district sports competition was at its height no man was bet ter known throughout the area for his interest in the games in the claremont softball lea gue he was a regular attendant when health permitted in poli tics he was a strong liberal mr brignall was born south of brougham the son of the late mr snd mrs amos brignall he took up residence in clare mont in 1922 and was a barber in the village for 39 years he is survived by one sister olive mrs earl carson of brooklin and a brother walter of mark- ham a sister ida and a brother roy passed away a few years ago mr brignall was in his 62nd year to open new court for local cases commencing early in 1962 all traffic and criminal cases under the jurisdiction of markham township markham village and stouffville police depart ments will be handled through a magistrates court in rich mond hill the criminal court will be opened on jan 2nd traffic court will convene on january 15th after this date courts at buttonville and maple which had previously dealt with traffic violations will be dosed down it has been sug gested that magistrate r a pcarse may receive the new ap pointment cases from vaughan twp richmond hill wood- bridge and king city will also be aired at the new location the ontario provinical police from both vandorf and bond lake will continue to use the facili ties at newmarket the changeover has been un der discussion for several weeks the schedule at newmarket has been grossly overtaxed but this most recent arrangement is ex pected to ease the load council meeting is cancelled the regular meeting of the stouffville town council sched uled for thursday evening to night has been cancelled due to the death of mrs james wagg mother of the reeve the members will reconvene at a later time although no defi nite date has been set harvey triplets 12th anniversary gormleys famous harvey triplets will mark their twelfth birthdays on wednesday dec 13th bonnie brenda and bar bara daughters of mr and mrs lloyd harvey will celebrate the occasion with a cake candles and all the trimmings they hope that their grandparents mr and mrs harry smith and mrs frank harvey will be able to attend an aunt miss joyce harvey all of gormley is also expected the three sisters were born in york county memorial hos pital at 255 pm 355 pm and 4 pm their combined weight was 14 lbs 4 oz they presently attend the lloyd near claremont what is described by detec tives as the worst example of brutality to a dumb animal ever witnessed occurred recently near claremont when a valu able watchdog belonging to john paton was apparently forcibly taken from home dragged behind a vehicle at the end of a rope and left in a ditch on a sideroad the owners of the dog mr and mrs john paton of clare mont arc offering a reward of 100 for anyone identifying the car which dragged the dog to its death the city detective ag ency is working on the case and the humane society is also investigating the dog named lauchie four years old was an excellent watch dog and protected the livestock as well when found the animals head was battered its eyes gouged with gravel and one side of its body completely torn away with the impact high school bates high in staff poll working conditions and board- staff relations at the stouffville dist high school have been classed as excellent in a rec ent poll conducted by the ont secondary school teachers fed eration opinions were tabulat ed from at least seventyfive per edit of high school teach ers employed by each rated board the questionnaire was divided into three parts 1 board atti tude toward educational im provement 2 relations be tween board and staff 3 con ditions of work stouffville re ceived an excellent classification in each division markliams rat ing was excellent in questions 2 and 3 but good in question 1 at pickering the boardstaff re lations were judged as poor working conditions were class ed as excellent in the same deartment newmarket polled a surprising poor more than sixtyfive percent of the stouffville electorate turned out to the polls in mondays municipal election to upset reeve ken wagg and register a substantial no vote against fluoridation the turnout at the polls was twenty percent higher than last year due it is believed primarily to the vote on fluoridation biggest shocker of the election was the upset of reeve wagg who had guided the administration through one of the towns greatest periods of advance ment and was not expected io be seriously challenged however mr timbers who will take over the reins in 1962 has many years of council experience to his credit he campaigned seriously from the first day of his nomination and undoubtedly drew a goodly number of followers with his promise of vigorous industrial pro motion his majority over air wagg was 124 votes with his heaviest support coming in the poll at the east end of town where he picked up 88 votes over his opponent mr spang who was conceded a most excellent chance of election right from the beginning proved all his followers had hoped for and ran up one of the largest votes ever accorded a local candidate he polled 1012 votes out of the 12000 ballots cast councillors gar lehman and william parsons ran a close race for the other two council seats polling 683 and 617 votes respectively mr slack went down to defeat with 525 votes his heaviest loss coming in the west end poll where he fell nearly seventyfive votes behind mr slack has served two years on council fluoridation not acceptable stouffville electorate registered a resounding no vote against fluoridation both the committee in favour of fluoridation and the group against campaigned vig orously on their respective stands only one poll in town gave the vote a yes majority that being in the west end of town where the vote was 155 for and 141 against in all other polls those opposed rolled up substantial leads going out in front by more than a hundred votes at the east end total returns showed those opposed numbered 716 and those in favour 432 accident takes life of 18yearold markham girl how they voted here an is year old north mark ham girl was killed instantly late saturday night on the ken nedy road near milliken when a car in which she was a pas senger crashed into the rear of a stalled truck carol galbraith the victim and her companion dean middleton also of mark ham were returning home from toronto when the accident oc curred the middleton car was torn apart by the impact the truck driver clarence plinken- boomer of milliken suffered head cuts but was released from hospital after treatment the funeral service was con ducted from the dixon funeral home markham on tuesday afternoon at 130 rev r a wigby of grace anglican chu rch was in charge interment was made in omagh presbyter- ian cemetery the pallbearers were messrs richard skelton monte thiel jim oliver clare norwood dave winriitoy and richard conlin the deceased was born at willowdale a former student at the markham dist high school she had enrolled in a hairdress- ing course in september she is survived by her mother mrs peggy galbraith a brother rob- ert and a sister history the weather although dull was mild and added to the comfort of both the partici pants and its spectators prize winners santas parade there were a total of twenty- four floats in the stouffville santa claus parade on satur day as well as several dozen dec orated bicycles doll buggies and miscellaneous conveyances the prizes were awarded as follows schools 3 rooms and over summitview school orchard park school stouffville high school schools under three rooms altona hillcrest beth- esda clubs and associations ballantrae teens ballantrae brownies stouffville skating club commercial mickey hunt sunoco ted topping miscel laneous hendricks clown peter harris murray linton wanda croxforth ready for action whitchurch township council remains unchanged following mondays municipal election reeve cliff wallwork and dep utyreeve frank williams were both returned by acclamation and in the voting monday coun cillors ross farquharson elsie gibbs and ivan mclaughlin were all returned with no vote for either of the two top seats in council the turnout at the polls was very small councillor ross farqu harson headed the polls wilh a vote of 763 ivan mclaughlin followed with 630 and mrs el sie gibbs polled 544 votes eu gene grills received very dose to the same number of votes that he polled in his initial try for a scat last year his vote was 470 lawrence hennessey the fifth candidate polled 256 votes the wilcox lake polls pro vided the greatest strength for the winning candidates giving mrs gibbs 190 votes and ross farquharson 144 coach cherry is released whitby mohawks continue to skid down the oha metro jr a group standing on monday night they were out- hustled by unionville to lose 63 on their own home ice the recent release of coach bob cherry stouffville municipal council meeting last week with the resi dent ministers of the town made the annual distribution of the revenue from the william son estate fund the amount of money given away was s2602 the williamson estate fund was money left by the late thomas williamson the reve nue from which has to be dis tributed by the end of each year to the deserving poor of stouffville according to his will greenwood player sets speed record a greenwood hockey player is the current leader in an in dividual speed skating com petition conducted every fri day night as part of the com munity league 1 a markham man had a brush with death recently when the transport he was driving col lided with a cpr freight train in bethany bruce james creigh- ton 41 of jonquil crescent markham was seriously in jured when the left side of his transport was sliced off the accident happened at 10 am at a level crossing on high way 7a in bethany engineer of the cpa extra sou w hay- ghton of smiths falls said that his engine was completely past the crossing when the truck hit the train i remember the brakes being applied but really aidnt see what happened truck hit us conductor j c watson of right behind the engine we were going north from have- lock as he approached the train he iut his truck to the south bringing the trucks left side closest to the train we took it completely off loaded with milk the- transport loaded with milk belongs to taylor brothers in mmkham milk is reported to have been spilled over a wide area preions taken all the usual precautions were being taken said mr haughton we had the bell ringing and the whistle was sounded before we even ap proached the crossing as soon as i heard the crun havelock said the truck hit ching the brakes were applied us he was heading east on to bring the train to a halt highway 7a and hit the car j mr kauhton said we oajy had three cars on the train one was loaded the other two were empty rushed to hospital mr creighton was rushed to the peterborough civic hospital to undergo treatment for multi ple abrasions and a fractured leg dr s l speller of bethany was the doctor in attendance at the scene of the accident inspect damage an inspection of the damage was carried out by constable ken barber of uie bowmanvillc opp the entire left side of the truck was completely demol ished mr watson conductor of the train said he had to
