pge 2 the stouffyiile tribune twjjy noember 16 1967 editorial taking their place in pleasing comment were heard on every hand sunday on the con tribution to the annual remembrance day church service and parade by the stouftvihe high school band under the leadership of mr j waiie this marked the first time the band had ever taken part in any com munity activities outside of school affairs they have had little practice in the art of playing while marching but made a creditable showing and a good thing nomination meetings are upon us according to rumoured predic tions a host of new candidates will make a bid for office in some local municipalities one of these is pick ering township in ward 3 alone an estimated five or perhaps six persons plan to throw their respective hats in the ring unlike the toronto daily press the tribune has never advocated in print any particular choice between wouldbe office holders may the best man or lady win has been our policy and we feel a fair one to re tain by holding a ringside seat at close to fifty meetings per year we do suggest however that we can quite accurately appraise the knowledge and the activity of individual council incumbants for this reason we are community activities contribution to the sunday parade in the past it has been necessary to import a band if one was to be had but these days should now be over as the school organization has proved quite capable of filling this need a school band is a great asset to not only the school but the entire com munity stouftvihe has been without a band for many years and the in tegration of the school musicians into town affairs is a most welcome sight for pickering not at all hesitant in endorsing whole heartedly the return of ward 2 coun cillor milton mowbray to the 1962 political scene in pickering township councillor mowbray has been good for pickering possessing a heritage of solid pioneer stock he has shown himself to be ably capable of coping with the sometimes com plicated process of urbanrural de velopment few people know the complex history behind councillor mowbrays acclamation to the ward 2 post the persuasive efforts employed founded a representative that has been good not only for one area but for the entire municipality any ward or any township for that matter would be fortunate to obtain this calibre of councilman we would hope that his services may long be retained anything for circulation anything for circulation is a tune which is constantly played by our big metropolitan daily news papers this is not only true of in ternational news but small local items as well in the latter respect we refer to the constant use of such headings as minister fined 100 police officer convicted priest is charged and so on this method of treating news in the daily press has been sharply criticized in the past and is one which should be abandoned by all the press it is a form of discrimination which goes so far as to place a stigma on the profession because of the mis demeanour of one person does the fact that the man is a minister a policeman a priest a war veteran or anything else make the news item any more important should reflection be cast on an en tire group just because one member gets out of line we dont think so remembrance day points up responsibilities another remembrance day is over and as the speaker at the annu al sunday service pointed out we cannot just pay tribute to the fallen and buy poppies we must ponder the responsibilities entrusted to us through the sacrifices of the fallen it is our duty to build upon the free dom which they have so dearly won for us to many this remembrance day must have seemed so frustrating witth the world in a turmoil and with the world in a turmoil and what attitude should we take in such a mess it might help to consider the freedom which we enjoy it is cer tainly not the freedom to avoid re sponsibility to ignore contributions to worthwhile enterprises or side step our obligations or to live a life of ease while others suffer lets not hear people say dont bother me about these world troubles theres nothing i can do about it we might stop to remember that the wars were won by people millions of them working together for a common cause this might help us realize that its the individual mak ing contributions to the whole that sets the international scene we should pause to realize that its the way we run our own individ ual affairs operate our business or the business of the municipality making our opinions heard at all levels of government these things can decide conditions that their sacrifices have not been in vain let us lake stock of the way we employ our freedom which has been preserved for us to hold on high unequalled honour when hon leslie frost the then premier of ontario visited with pupils from two public schools in markham village last week it was an honour perhaps unequalled for that municipality the winning of another plaque emblematic of a six year accidentfree record is in itself an accomplishment worthy of merit to have the official presentation made by the premier of the province is an occasion that will long be remember ed by the student participants the markham safety program has been as we understand it a pro motion headed by the police chief mr fred white robinson school principal mr abernethy and local service clubs since its origination others have offered their support and leadership how long more than 750 boys and girls can maintain his enviable record is a question that can be an swered only with each passing school day the sixtymember student pat rol is certainly worthy of recognition this was accomplished in a distin guished manner last monday morn ing a farmers lament in bygone lays i used to toil in good old rich pickering township soil i mllkel the cows and fed the sheep and rocked the jetting hens to sleep and fed the calves their spark ling milk until they looked as fine as silk and did about a million chores that kept me hustling out of doors and thus i gairjd an appetite that was an everlasting right the women baked all kinds of grub and brought it on by the tub and i just threw the victuals in until i couldnt wag my chin then my heart was sad and sore because i couldnt cat no more but now dyspepsia has me for jts own andl jutt sit around and sroin i if i get harsh and cat a tart i the doctor will take me all apart they slice my system with a saw and gamble with every breath i draw willis mcnair newcastle rr 2 if they are radioactive lhafs more than i can good care of him and comfort him when he cries the nurse said when she handed the baby to the young mother who was go ing home the woman and her husband exchanged a proud and happy look well do the best we can the mother promised an infant requires a great deal of attention in the old days when household help was easy to obtain there was a say ing a baby is one womans fulltime job today women have many timesaving electric helpers stoves washing ma chines vacuum cleaners all the same it is not easy to fit in all the duties necessary for a babys routine feeding dia pering clothing washing into a homemakors day filled with preparing meals washing dish es laundering and cleaning doctors usually recommend that a new mother have help in her home for a week or two when she brings her baby from the hospital it takes a while for her to get her strength back and to become accustomed to look ing after a baby often her sleep is broken at night and if she has another woman to assist her in the day she can get some needed rest while her helper looks after the baby and the home i have yet to meet a mother who did not- want to give her baby good care an outstand ing social worker said not long ago at a public meeting breast feeding seems to be returning in popularity in many areas and natures provision for nour- ishment and way for feeding a baby cannot be excelled the comfort an infant feels as he is held in his mothers arms and fed adds greatly to his happi ness and growth sometimes babies must be brought up in large institutions where their physical wants are attended to but the nurses and assistants have not time to give much individual attention to each child it has been observed that these babies do not thrive as well as a baby receiving the tender loving care of a mother care for the body and comfort for the soul are two needs of every small child in fact they are essential for happiness all through life much has been done to educate mothers in nec essary health procedures and also in accident prevention if comfort or emotional sup port is lacking in a childs en vironment this is likely to pro duce a disturbed youngster he is apt to become a problem to himself his parents and society if he feels deeply rejected devastating effect sometimes the rebellious mixedup child comes from a broken home where either death or divorce have removed a muchneeded father from the daily life of the home adults who insist on divorce because they claim that their marriage is a failure should face the dev astating effects on most boys and girls of the separation of their parents bickering between father and mother can poison the atmophere too but a child needs the love of both fa ther and mother he shoidd not have bis loyalties pulling him apart in two directions because his parents live apart there are times of stress such as illness when a child must have extra care and comfort every member of the family should do his part to help in these emergencies when the ex tra demands on a mothers time and energy can be exhausting she must be free to carry out the doctors directions about the small patient a mother will al so want to plan for quiet enter tainment and things which a convalescing child can do in bed on ordinary days small mis haps are apt to occur a child falls on a tricycle and scrapes his knee or trips on a toy left on the stairs and bumps his head we sometimes seem to go from crisis to crisis one mother of several small child ren exclaimed who was con stantly kissing a small childs hurt to make it well mothers are given special re sources of love and patience as they look after their children reassure them and send them out to play again all our mod ern health techniques and new antibiotic drugs have not re placed the two things every child needs comfort and care sunday school t h tllir btouffutllc unlntiu established ij1s a v nolan son publishers member of the canadian weekly newspaper association and selfexpression is very dangerous philosophy for it encourages the indulgence of every inward urge arguing that these are quite lawful desires this popular but utterly false notion having been widely preached and accepted has yiel ded a bitter harvest in our con temporary society the increase in juvenile delinquency bears witness to this fact anli christian philosophy urges indulge thyself but this either ignores or denies hu man depravity and assumes that man is innately good the christian gospel cries deny thyself boldly declaring that man is innately bad if we in dulge our flower gardens by ap plying the principle of selfex pression the weeds will arise to rebuke us and to advertise our folly no those flowerbeds must be continuously disciplin ed by vigilant weeding the heart of the lesson the broad road of life is a popular road the masses travel it because it imposes little or no restraint on ones sinful desires the fact that it ultimately leads o eternal loss is either ignored or disbelieved but jesus christ plainly declared that he who in dulged himself and made the at tainment of personal ambition his goal would be the everlast ing loser on the other hand the man who denied himself for christs sake and chose to re fuse earths sinful pleasures would be the finder of real life in the long run ip this way christs leaching was absolutely revolutionary and exactly the opposite to the popular accepted standards the reason for this lay in the fact that first he knew the deadly possibilities of mans depraved nature and second he knew how relatively worthless were temporal considerations even true children of god who possess the divine nature arc capable of such outbreaks as falsehood temper theft and evil speaking and if their testi mony is to be preserved they too must learn to say no to i self and to allow the indwell ing holy spirit to form the i character of christ within them they must keep the body in the 1 place of subjection they must tightly curb its fallen aopetites denying its urges lest after hay- j ing testified to others they them selves end up in disapproval and disgrace i the christian battlefield is no j place for fallen soldiers it calls i for strong and courageous war riors but no warrior who has not first conquered self can ever hope to be successful in con quering others for god the man of god who would fight the good fight of faith must first of all flee youthful lusts and res olutely deny the allurements of i j luxury and laxity get ihcm at the stouffville tribune the coming winter will be a i hard one says a
