pit 14 the stourtyrie tokjh tnondy september 28 1961 claremont businessmen contest case at public hearing tuesday to make local depot a caretaker stop corrulhers 12 children largest family in claremont district at the conclusion of a public hearing tuesday morning at which objections were heard against the proposal to remove the cpr station agent and place the claremont station in a caretaker category j w stewart operations superin tendent for the local division indicated that the question might be deferred for a year or two the presumption was that if business could be increased through the claremont outlet as those present asserted it could the present agent setup would remain conducting the hearing was w a pringle district inspec tor for the board of transport commissioners along with j w stewart of the canadian pa cific railway mr pringle stated that the cpr had made application for the change but the application could be withdrawn or any de cision by the board deferred if the railway so requested he explained thai under the care taker system there would be no telegraph service and no money would be handled for freight the caretaker would be a commissioned express man we dont instruct the railway to make such a change it is strictly up to them he said mr r hassard solicitor speaking for pickering town ship stated that the original esolutjon by the township council had been rescinded and iko ouncil now stood opposed to the change were here to find out how much the agent is needed and what the alternatives are said mr pringle mr stewart explained that the railway is trying to cut costs where the agent is not justified and said that at pres ent the claremont revenues were not sufficient to maintain such an agent he said he be lieved that a caretaker on duty eight hours could give approxi mately the same service myrtle would be the closest station with an agent mr chas cooper one of the leading spokesmen ii trying to keep the service for the village asked about carload freight it would have to be handled through agincourt and myrtle replied mr stewart he went on to say that revenues had fallen pretty low some months down to s563 in december and only 318 in august theres not much profit in those figures with the salaries we have to pay he continued revenue from the locust hill flag sta tion was not included with cla remont it was pointed out there are many other points besides revenue to be consid ered said mr pringle mr stewart said that the savings by having a caretaker as op posed to an agent would be 300 a month solicitor hassard asked if the cpr had projected the future for the area he said that the pickering township boom in the south was bound to reach north mr pringle said the board could only judge by the present theres a general trend down ward on the whole division said mr stewart mr hassard replied that the economy was backward everywhere in 1960 mr cooper reminded them that myrtle had been closed once and since reopened its much smaller than claremont he said mr stewart said the earnings there were greater and it was more strategically situated as a train ordering office pontypool is also being considered for a caretaker he said it was pointed out that only one trucking company served the village and it couldnt go into oshawa it could be a prelude to clos ing the station and a backward step for the northern part of the township said mr has sard mr cooper said that the rail way rates were more favorable but the trucks were faster and suggested the railway should try and give a little better ser vice mr stewart said the cpr would be glad to stave off the change for a year at least if some help could be given to in crease business mr j mansell presented the brief for the village business men the brief stated that the station served an estimated 75 sq miles and a population of 2000 local express pickup would help he said in speak ing for the sarco co mr man- sell said that the company had had 230 outbound shipments by rail during 1960 and 129 in bound we feel that local busi ness could be increased if the service was better particularly the transshipments he said the company would have to ship entirely by truck if the change was made dayliner service mr mansell touched an im portant local point when he said that there were few people who knew that claremont was served by three dayliners each way each day you can get on here at claremont in the morn ing and be at the union in 31 minutes he said but few peo ple know it mr sherman scott reeve of pickering said that the change would impede the orderly growth of the township he stressed the point that this was the only agent station in the en tire township mr fred lewis altona said that his business had increased 1200 percent since he had taken on ford implements and this was in tlie first year he said he paid shoo to the cpr sta tion in nine months of last year and only 91 the year before chas cooper speaking for his own business said that his large implement shipments were spread among several rail roads in the states but here the cpr had it all he said that he did not think the railroad had done much to try and in crease business we get no co operation in tracing shipments through toronto although our local agent does his best said mr cooper the move would be a great injustice mr cooper also presented the brief for the claremont coop who could not be represented it stated that 32 carloads had been brought in last year and more were expected this year as new lines of feed had been added the
