last five years saddle horses have been on the increase throughout the province of on tario and for that matter throughout all of canada and not to bo left out stouffville and vicinity also how many of you knew that the stouffvilie branch of the canadian legion used to sponsor a horse show right in stouffville ill bet not too many because the population of this town and its surrounding area has almost doubled in recent years i believe the last show was held in 1951 on july 1st it was a oneday show with 15 classes 2 palomino classes one hack class and all the rest hunters and jumpers if the legion lias wondered all these years what was the trouble with this show to make it unsuccessful i would say too much jumping and not enough other classes today when people go to a horse show they want to sec as many different classes and different breeds of horses as they can these classes may in clude light harness horses and ponies western saddle horses saddle horse and pony classes parade classes trail horse classes english western jumping breed classes dont you think there would be some thing for everyone at a show- like this i could not estimate the num ber of horses now residing in the stouffville area but im sure ts at least three times what it was when this show was on perhaps now would be a good time to give the show another chance how the horse evolved the horse as we know him had his beginning some 60 mil lion years ago in the eocene period judging by the fossilized remains found in wyoming and new mexico the dawn horse eohoppus was somewhere be- tween ten and twenty inches in height and looked like a cross between a jack rabbit and a whippet his iq was probably not up to that of the modern possum as the millennia went by eo- hippus changed radically prin cipally he grew larger which meant that in the absence of other means of defense he had to acquire fteetness c foot in order to escape his enemies the slow substle process of evo lution accomplished this for him llis feet which originally cedar grove when exhibition time comes around summer seems to be ov er school is uppermost in the childrens thoughts and pickles and crops in their parents but between now and winter lies the lovliest time in the canadian year the cool days when driv ing is a pleasure and the brill iant gay colours of our autumn if you need a destination for a fall drive how about one of our canadian historical sites there is one in any direction and at any distance not forgetting the new museum at brougham it may be a short drive but it would be well to allow consider able adventure to take a visitor postal history is well illustrated in the old post office museum in oakville and sharon temple has added a furnished log cabin and the 110- year- old doan house in toron to kind of country the bones muscles and ligaments of the legs seem also to have adapted themselves to running giving the horse both greater strength and a longer straight- cr groundconsuming stride the long spindly legs of the newborn foal which make him such an appealing youngster also enable him to meet the ageold demand for the speed necessary to survival prodded by instinct he stands and walks even before he is dry and with in a few hours after birth on legs almost as long as his dams he is able to travel with the herd in comparative safety evolution has also given the horse extraordinary teeth and eyes for the munching of grass an exceedingly abras ive foodstuff he has developed a most accommodating set of teeth they not only continue to grow as they are worn down but have such complex ridging that they retain their cutting edges throughout his normal lifetime his eyes which are larger than those of any other land mammal are singularly placed so that he has a complete semi circle of vision on both sides of his head which enables him to spot danger from the side or rear scratch pads from jumbo size down to nofe size get them at stouffville tribune a church with a message
