for post graduate study in nursing in a graduation ceremony in a deputation of four of stouffvilles doctors ap peared before the municipal council on thursday evening to request that action be taken to have the towns municipal water supply fluoridated drs d j petrie and donald smith appeared for the medical profession and drs neil smith and win murphy for the dentists the municipal council has already received recom mendation for fluoridation of the water from the york county health unit and the deputation advised that the move would have one hundred percent backing of all the medical and dental men in town council may by bylaw bring the question before the people by ballot vi if they wish proceed with the fluoridation on their own with the permission of the ontario water resources commission dr murphy said that the dentists would like to see the action taken as soon as possible he went on to say that fluoridation was most beneficial for the age group of twelve years and under to this statement was added statistics by dr petrie which revealed that teeth benefits in the over 40 year age group showed 2o less extractions this was proven by figures from municipalities where fluoridation had been in the drink ing water on a natural basis for many years dr neil smith explained to council the reason for a specified amount being injected into the water supply it was found that 1 part of the chemical to 1 million parts of water was most beneficial below this amount was ineffective and too much brought spots to the teeth the average citizen can look for smaller dental bills if the water is fluoridated he said reports from cities where the chemical had been ejected into the water supply for long periods showed no ill effects whatever dr petrie said that fluoridation was backed by every known health group dr donald smith said that the move would unquestionably be a good one and that most opposition to fluoridation came through ignorance the public utilities commission would have to look into the matter and the owrc would have to be contacted said reeve wagg he added however that the final decision would be up to council all council members expressed favor for fluorida tion and deputyreeve ken laushway urged that the question be taken up at the next meeting of council for a final answer family of accident victim awarded 43000 long council wrangle
