informed of a blaze in a tree on a golf course but instead of notifying the dis trict fire department they elect ed to send only a cruiser to the scene the officer later report ed that he was unable to locate the blaze councillor sumners criticism was not shared by some other council members the munici pality shouldnt be put to the expense of 12500 to put out a mere tree fire countered deputyreeve lawson mumber- son i feel that the police depart ment exercised good judgment agreed reeve wilfred dean the council members feel this is some sort of a joke lashed back councillor sumner i wish to go on record as con demning the police for their action in this instance he declared that a party should not be required to specify the need of a fire truck when he submits a fire call its a slipshod arrangement he continued he said that the officer entered the golf course area circled and drove out he said that persons on the scene were able to douse the flames with a garden hose deputyreeve mumberson said that the telephone message should have been more explicit he said that the arrangement that all fire calls should be chan neled through the police office had been satisfactory in the past since the office provided 24 hour service reeve dean said that the us ual procedure was for the police to first summon the brigade then proceed to the fire scene with a cruiser he suggested that new recruits on the force should be familiarized with this arrangement councillor sumner said that he had been told by the police chief that the practice was to send an officer to the fire first and then summon the brigade councillor hooper suggested that chief wideman should at tend the next regular meeting in an effort to explain the pre sent system council to better advan tage in the office preparing by laws i think that it is ridicu lous for him to be out hunting up evidence concluded reeve dean deputyreeve mumberson con tended that the enforcement of township bylaws was he duty of the police department ke noted however that such inves tigations often had to be side lined due to more important police work the first duty of a police officer is to
