resume work on highway next week stouffville works dept has been advised that beamish con struction co will resume work on highway 47 through town next week this information was announced at the regular meetitng of stouffville munici pal council thursday it is up derstood that when the time arrives for paving this work will proceed east from ring- wood to church st in down town stouffville all the under ground work has been com pleted but the further widening and filling will be continued right away deputyreeve ken laushway mated that a number of local men some of them unemployed had been working on the main st pavement sweeping he urged that this work be allowed io continue as much as possible right now since the govern ment pays a 50 subsidy on such work up until the 15th of c baycroft rr 1 gorm- ley passed away in the toronto western hospital following an illness of slightly more than seven weeks he was in his 59th year the late mr baycroft was born north of bond head he resided in the town of aurora for a number of years before taking up permanent residence on his gormley district farm where he lived for the past 24 years he is survived by his wife the former gertrude both- am one son robert at home and a daughter dorothy mrs ross smith in aurora he has one sister helen baycroft also of aurora mr baycroft could justly be regarded as one of whitchurch suspension march 31st and was sent to jail for 10 days by magistrate o s hollinrake in newmarket court on monday april 10th mitchell was apprehended by markham township police after a routine check constable evan kelley told the court in testi mony that mitchell had been stopped on the markham road and at that time had been un able to produce his licence he had been driving his fathers car it was revealed that the youth had lost his licence after accumulating 15 demerit points he was also convicted in a willowdale court on a charge of failing to remain at the scone of an accident on feb 9 1961 the magistrate told the youth when your licence was sus pended it was done for the protection of the public and the law must be upheld mitch ell pleaded that a friend had driven the car for most of the evening but when the hour be came late he had driven it home himself rather than nave his friend inconvenienced mit chell will have a further sus pension of his licence due to the charge present his pro position at the next regular meeting chase car thieves over fields police cruisers from three dis trict departments converged on the ringwood area during the early hours of saturday morn ing when two impaired toronto teenagers attempted to outrace a markham village police car in a stolen 1959 chevrolet im- pala v8 convertible the chase possibly the wildest on local police files reached speeds up to 110 miles per hour from the husiness section of markham village to 16th avenue in mark ham township at this point the right front tire of the stolen auto blew out but its speed was slackened only to 95 miles per hour as it raced northward through ringwood warning shot sgt chester gilliatt told the tribune that following the blow out the car veered from one side of the highway to the other southbound traffic was forced off to the west shoulder of the road and in some miraculous manner no collision occurred north of ringwood the driver kenneth oster 18 of toronto lost complete control of the vehicle and it rammed headlong into the ditch striking a tree and landing upright against a fence a warning shot from sgt cilliatts gun halted the attempt ed escape of a passenger 16 year old wayne sherman also of toronto the driver ran into a nearby field but vvfs later arrested by pc s e forrester of vandorf opp they were temporarily locked up in the buttonville jail and later turned over to metro detectives of no 21 division 800 damage the stolen car the property of frank thornton toronto suffered 80000 damage in the crash he told police that he had removed the keys from the ig nition but had neglected to lock it the two boys en route to sutton were not injured sgt gilliatt and pc wm vance spotted the theft car at the intersection of no 7 and 48 highways on the markham village main street they at tempted to stop it and the chase began they were all over the place said sgt gilliatt he said that on at least four occa sions the auto appeared headed for the ditch but aided by power steering they were able to keep it on the pavement search fields the two markham village officers were later joined by pc clifford cox of markham township and pc forrester of vandorf opp and an allout search of the area was conduct ed in an effort to locate the dri ver about one hour later the youth returned to the highway and was immediately arrested by the provincial by pc dennis davies identified the cars owner and the occupants readily admitted their part in the escapade they agreed to repair the damage and the work was completed over the weekend under th su pervision of mr hendricks and harry schell due to the youths cooperation no charges will be laid local lion dist deputy lion walter pipher a past president of stouffville lions club has been elected to the office of district deputy gover nor of region 18 lions inter national the new district dep uty will have 25 lions clubs under his supervision the elec tion was conducted in aurora on monday night of this week and the local member received the honours after a close election with a fellow lion from thorn- hill lion walter pipher is only the second stouffville lion to reach this high office during the more than twenty years the club has been in operation lion fred campbell was also district deputy a few years ago walter pipher hss been a member of the stouffville club for fifteen years and has served with vigor and enthusiasm in many capaci ties during this period to the house league chanv pions and the individual tro phies will be presented to the club captains
