on monday night the town of ajax will carry 3294 of the burjen and pick- ering village wiu support the remaining 555 in spite of pickering townships landslide share of the current budget only 54 to of the total enrollment comes from within the municl- palitv the 1961 rate has been set at 1596 mills it was 11s2 mills in 1960 with the increase in assess ment the per pupil grant pay ment has dropped amounting to a total loss of 13000 reeve sherman scott charged that the township was presently subsi dizing the village of pickering and the town of ajax its a grim picture alarming said the reeve and theres nothing we can do about it he further noted that expenditures had in creased including staff salaries which had risen from s34901963 to s12942100 or more than ssoooo the plant operation has increased by over s20000 and instructional supplies are up by s5000 it will cost an estimated 51044000 for transportation in 1961 much of this increase can be directly attributed to the operation of the new high school at dunbarton its very unfair to expect pickering township to subsidize the high school educational costs in other municipalities said councillor harry boyes councillor clifford laycox sug gested that perhaps some con sideration should be given to the townships withdrawal from the high school area we spend many hours here at nights in an attempt to keep our mill rate down and then find that both school budgets will be in creased he said i hate to think what the ratepayers are going to say when they see this years tax bill councillor lay cox noted however that after checking the estimated high school budget he could not find any way in which to lessen it we dont actually know enough about the complicated j procedure of arranging a high school budget suggested the reeve we must tae it for granted that the costs are justi fied in referring to the 580000 in crease in the total cost of in struction councillor boyes point ed out that this scale was gov erned to a great extent by the teachers federation claremont how does a fullgrown aber deen angus bull just disappear from a well kept well fencedin farm without leaving a trail or tracks in this day and age the
