tiie four high schools of ajax pickering whitby and uxbridge this program receiv ed great assistance from the ontario county tuberculosis association who provided edu cational material equipment and financial assistance for transportation and xrays the method of testing used was a new simple painless skin test known as the heaf test the majority of the students polled at one high school said they did not even feel the test as it was applied almost 90 of the parents of the students gave their consent and a total of 1718 tests were carried out of these 34 were found to give positive reactions a positive reaction means that the individual person has at some time during life taken tuberculosis germs into the body it docs not mean that he or she has or ever will have tubercu losis if the reaction is negative there is reasonable evidence that the person has never been so infected positive reactors were offered chest xrays in addition since a positive reaction offers an in dication that active tuberculosis might be present in a member of his family the public health nurse visited their homes and arranged chest xravs and tuber culin testing for the family as necessary no cases of active tuberculo sis were found as a result of this survey but it is felt that valuable knowledge and educa tional experience has been gain ed as a result of the program expect more than 60 children
